Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol went through practice Thursday and are expected to play Friday.

With the Los Angeles Lakers wrapping up a much needed layoff after their back-to-back that ended Monday, the purple and gold expect both Pau Gasol and Kobe Bryant to return to their lineup Friday when the Washington Wizards visit Staples Center, via Lakers Reporter Mike Trudell.

Gasol had an ultrasound on his right foot in which he tore the plantar fascia of six weeks ago and the results showed that it has continued to heal as he progresses. The initial six-to-eight timetable falls right in line with his return, and despite having a minor setback last Saturday, Gasol will resume playing. Gasol did admit to having trouble with his conditioning, but having been out of basketball action for so long, said the only way to get back into basketball shape is to play, via Trudell.

Bryant practiced with the team Thursday and went through the majority of drills, only stopping to receive treatment on his ankle. Kobe has missed the last two games after playing in the previous 67 contests.

Both players returning to the lineup will alleviate the pressure on the seven-man rotation that Mike D'Antoni instilled in the absence of both players recently. There are 13 games remaining in the regular season. With the Utah Jazz losing to the Houston Rockets Tuesday night the Lakers now hold a 1.5 game lead over Utah for the eight seed.

It will be a full week since Kobe tried to play on the ankle when his status will be once again in the air.

Pau Gasol could also return to the starting lineup against the Wizards after missing six weeks of action after tearing the plantar fascia of his right foot.

Kobe did, however, travel to Phoenix with the team so he can continue receiving treatment on his ankle. Jodie Meeks will continue to start in Kobe's absence.

Bryant was considered a game-time decision because of his sprained ankle as well as battling the flu.
Mike D'Antoni anticipates Kobe Bryant will start against the Pacers. After, of course, Kobe put up warm up shots earlier in the day on his severely sprained ankle.

Kobe Bryant suffered a severe ankle sprain Wednesday in Atlanta after Dahntay Jones undercut him (a play which the league later stated should have been a foul call), but Mike D'Antoni "anticipates" that Bryant will start Friday when the Los Angeles Lakers take on the Indiana Pacers, via Lakers reporter Mike Trudell.

Kobe put up warm-up shots in Indiana before the game and is officially considered a game-time decision. An injury he said was the worst he had suffered since 2000 and he's ready to go?
The NBA league office has reviewed the play in which Kobe Bryant was hurt.

The NBA League office reviewed tape on the no-call when Dahntay Jones undercut Kobe Bryant and claims that the replay "confirmed that referees missed a foul call" as Jones "did not give him the opportunity to land cleanly", via NBA.com:

After review at the league office, video replay confirmed that referees missed a foul call on Jones as he challenged Bryant's shot and did not give him the opportunity to land cleanly back on the floor. Bryant should have been granted two free throws.

Kobe immediately stated post-game that it should have been a foul call, "period" via Twitter. It appears he was right. Most importantly, this set a precedent with the league officially stating a play like this should have been a foul call.

Jones clearly left Kobe no space to land cleanly, causing his leg to land awkwardly, and ultimately giving him a severe ankle sprain:

Bryant was undercut by Dahntay Jones as he tried to push the game into overtime during the Lakers' loss to the Hawks. Kobe since has said that it's his worst injury since the 2000 NBA Finals when he suffered a similar injury when Jalen Rose undercut him, to which he later claimed he did with intent.

The Lakers play the Sacramento Kings on Sunday, followed by the Phoenix Suns on Monday in a back-to-back after Friday's game in Indiana.
As Lakers Nation start to get over the shock of losing yet another All-Star to injury, there's much debate about whether or not Atlanta's Dahntay Jones intentionally hurt Kobe Bryant.

Kobe Bryant sprained his ankle during the Los Angeles Lakers' loss Wednesday night, generating a moment that was like pulling the emergency brake while going 100 miles per hour to the Lakers' post All-Star break momentum. The Mamba had missed a potential game tying shot, a baseline leaner over the defending Dahntay Jones. The attempt was a bit too strong and clanged off the side of the rim, but it was immediately apparent that the Lakers had lost more than the game.

Kobe Bryant rolled on the Phillips Arena court in pain, laying on the hardwood reaching for his left ankle. The crucial play had happened so fast in the camera-side corner, that all the viewer could see was Kobe going down in a heap. The Lakers would go onto lose, 96-92 in a game that was painfully winnable, but ultimately with a price far greater than just one more L on the schedule.

In the ensuing replays, it's obvious that Kobe suffered a severe ankle sprain by coming down on the side of Jones' foot. It's not entirely uncommon for such a physical defender like the Atlanta small forward keeping close to Bryant, but with the game on the line, there were questions as to whether or not the Mamba was fouled. Judge for yourself on this replay with multiple camera angles:

Less than an hour after the conclusion of the Lakers 96-92 loss in Atlanta, Kobe took to social media, tweeting:

#dangerousplay that should have been called. Period.

— Kobe Bryant (@kobebryant) March 14, 2013

Kobe later said in a postgame interview "As defensive players, you can contest shots, but you can't walk underneath players. That's dangerous for the shooter. I don't ever want to put that on somebody, I really don't. I just think players need to be made conscious of it and I think officials need to protect shooters. Period."

Jones quickly responded to whether or not he intentionally stuck his foot out in order to hurt Kobe, tweeting:

Tape doesn't lie. Ankle was turned on the floor after the leg kick out that knocked him off balance. I would never try to hurt the man

— Dahntay (@dahntay1) March 14, 2013

On first glance, it's hard to tell whether or not Jones placed his foot underneath Bryant on purpose. It was a last second play with an extremely physical defender trying to body up one of the slickest shooters in the game. Dogging Kobe from the right elbow, it's unclear at first whether or not Jones' momentum simply carries his foot forward, or if he strategically planted it underneath Bryant. Take a look at this slow motion video from TWC Sportsnet and judge for yourself:

It's always difficult to tell in a slow motion replay, but it's fairly apparent that Jones intentionally stamped his foot down beneath Kobe. It doesn't appear to be a natural stride forward, but rather a deliberate motion that stops short where Kobe's left leg would land. Had Jones gone with his momentum, it looks like his entire right leg actually would have been underneath Bryant...which would have been a foul with seconds left on the clock. Either way, it was a clear foul that cost the Lakers on several different levels--the game and perhaps their star player.

Going back to Dahntay's tweet, Jones claims that Kobe rolled his ankle not on his foot, but rather on the ground. That may be true, but even if that is the case, he did so because he had to displace his foot at the last second...because another player's limb was in the way of his natural landing spot. There's really no way to excuse this.

Kobe complains about calls all the time, not entirely different than every other player in the league. However, Jones invaded the shooter's space in both a clear violation of the rules and more importantly, an play that has seriously injured someone.

The NBA must look into the conclusion of last night's game and think about possible punishments for Jones. The game results is in the books and a player is already hurt, but the league has to put a message out there that this isn't a matter to be taken lightly.
