The Lakers take on the Nets in Brooklyn without both Dwight Howard and Metta World Peace. Can the Lakers overcome the extremely thin depth they have, or will the Nets rotation of bigs be too much?

Showtime

4:30 pm PST

Plot

The Los Angeles Lakers are in Brooklyn to face the Nets. The last 24 hours for the Lakers have been hectic to say the least, but most importantly for this game, the Lakers will be without both Dwight Howard and Metta World Peace.

Dwight Howard continues to miss time due to the torn labrum in his shoulder, even after receiving the PRP procedure, and doesn't want to re-injure the shoulder to restart the process, or even worse, force the issue of surgery. Before he was announced out for the game, he revealed to Stephen A. Smith that his back is only at 75%, and his legs tingle and go numb during games. Another night without Dwight, another night of starting Pau at center.

Unfortunately for the Lakers Metta World Peace received a rather late suspension in regards to his altercation with Brandon Knight in Sunday's "early" game. The league has ruled that MWP is to be suspended one game without pay after grabbing Knight and "striking" his face. This puts even more stress on the thin depth the Lakers have been working with in the absence of Jordan Hill as well.

The Lakers will need to use unorthodox lineups (not that they haven't been throughout the season) in order to patch the holes in their roster. Will Mike D'Antoni shift Kobe up and start small? Will Mr. Invisible Devin Ebanks find his number called off the bench once again? How much burn will Robert Sacre get, if any? Will Darius Morris get another crack at playing time? All these fascinating questions, and more, shall be answered in just a few short hours!

Oh, and to make matters worse, Kobe Bryant will be playing through a sprained right elbow, and has been nursing tendinitis in it. It's no surprise that Kobe will soldier on while injured, but it's worth keeping an eye on. His efficient start from the field has slowed down, but he remains effective as he facilitates the offense.

As for Brooklyn, Deron Williams is listed as probable with a sore right ankle but is expected to play. Overall, the Nets have started 2013 very strong losing only four contests. They've also undertaken a coaching change but elected to keep it in-house as PJ.. Carlesimo has taken over for the fired Avery Johnson.

Currently, the Nets are the 30th ranked team in pace and 5th ranked defense allowing 94.5 points per game (though, adjusted to their slow pace, they allow 106.2 points per 100 possessions). Brook Lopez leads the team in points per game at 18.7 (52.6% fg) and 7.2 rebounds per game.

With the injuries the Lakers face, the Nets will have a bevy of big men to pit against Pau Gasol, Robert Sacre, and... Earl Clark. Brook Lopez, Kris Humphries, Andray Blatche, and Reggie Evans give the Nets plenty of size to use against the diminished Lakers front court, while Joe Johnson and Gerald Wallace spread the Lakers even thinner on the wings. This isn't an ideal night for the Lakers to be playing without both Howard and World Peace, though with their 22-26 record there's very little room for nights without starters regardless.

The Lakers remain 3.5 games out of the playoffs (Houston), with Portland also standing between them and a playoff berth. The seven game road trip hits game four, and thus far the Lakers are 2-1 and they have won 5 of their last 6 contests. Boston, Charlotte, and Miami remain before the Lakers return to Staples to play Phoenix on February 12th.

No Dwight, no Metta, banged up Kobe. Bring on the Nets!

Here's another dent in the Lakers season, as Kobe Bryant has sprained his right elbow per Mike Trudell.

The league has announced that Metta World Peace will be suspended for one game after his altercation with Brandon Knight in Detroit.

The NBA has suspended Metta World Peace for his altercation with Brandon Knight during Sunday's victory over the Detroit Pistons.

It was originally called a flagrant foul and there were no ejections. Here's a video of the tussle between the two.

Now, the Lakers will be without Dwight Howard (who just ruled himself out of tonight's game) and Metta World Peace. Yes, two of their five starters are out, and worse it's two of their "bigs", as Mike D'Antoni commonly assigns MWP on opposing power forwards and even centers in a pinch. This puts the Lakers in a bind, as their depth at the forward position is tight, and they are already without Jordan Hill for the season.

More of the same for a Lakers season that has been trying.

Dwight Howard will miss tonight's game against the Brooklyn Nets as he continues to suffer from pain in his shoulder. No Dwight tonight.

Another game, another night without Dwight Howard for the Lakers.

Howard has missed the last two games with his shoulder injury, and has received platelet rich plasma treatment on it in an attempt to subside the pain and accelerate the rehabilitation process. With the Lakers facing a critical stretch of road games (four left on this trip) missing Dwight Howard isn't ideal, though Los Angeles has won both games in which Pau Gasol has started at center (albeit they weren't pretty).

However, despite the PRP procedure and time away, Dwight Howard will not play tonight against the Brooklyn Nets, citing that his shoulder has improved slightly, but he doesn't want to injure it any further, per Mike Trudell.

Dwight Howard spoke with ESPN's Stephen A. Smith to discuss living up to expectations of past Lakers bigs, his health, his role in the offense, and his upcoming free agency. Full interview and quotes.

It seems both Lakers big men have been busy while in New York, as not only did Pau Gasol take the time to speak with the media (in this T.J. Simers interview where he expressed his distress once again), but Dwight Howard sat down with ESPN's Stephen A. Smith for an interview. The two discussed Dwight living up to the Lakers bigs of the past, his health, and Smith probed a bit in regards to Dwight's outlook on staying with the Lakers as a free agent.

When Stephen A. Smith pointed out that Kobe Bryant has 1014 field goal attempts on the season to Dwight's 442, Howard responded and admitted he has had an issue with Kobe's shot selection earlier in the season.

"There were a lot of times early in the season where I would get upset because I felt like he shot the ball a lot and I wanted some touches down low. Do I want touches? Yeah. But, whatever I have to do to help this team win. I have to keep my mind in that area." - Dwight Howard: Extended Conversation with Stephen A. Smith, ESPN

Dwight also revealed more about his current health, putting a low 75 percent on the status of his back recovery, and gave insight into the nerve damage he suffered in his legs because of his back.

"With my back, you know, it's not all the way there. 75 percent. And my shoulder is day-to-day" - Dwight Howard: Extended Conversation with Stephen A. Smith, ESPN

"Even sitting down in this chair right now is causing my legs to go numb. Just having this tingly sensation go all the way down my legs. That happens when I'm playing, that happens when I'm just sitting on the bench for a couple minutes, and it's not easy." - Dwight Howard: Extended Conversation with Stephen A.
Of course, no Dwight Howard conversation can exist without asking about his intention as an unrestricted free agent this Summer.

"Right now, my only focus is to get us into the playoffs and win a championship. Nothing else matters at this point" - Dwight Howard: Extended Conversation with Stephen A. Smith, ESPN

"I'm committed to this team, and us winning a championship." - Dwight Howard: Extended Conversation with Stephen A. Smith, ESPN

"I understand what the Lakers what, and I also understand that right now there's no need for all the circus, and all the stuff that happened last year to start back up. I don't want it, our team doesn't need it. I don't need it, and frankly our fans don't need it." - Dwight Howard: Extended Conversation with Stephen A. Smith, ESPN

Nothing groundbreaking from Dwight, though his detail regarding his back and legs is an important factor in this Lakers season. At only 75% with his back, with legs that tingle and go numb during games, and now trying to play through a torn labrum in his shoulder, it seems unlikely Howard will be fully healthy this season.

In a candid interview with T.J. Simers Pau Gasol reveals how he feels the team isn't being "maximized", that without change asking for a fresh slate is a "possibility", and much more.

Nothing has been easy for these Los Angeles Lakers as the Summer "favorites" have found themselves as underdogs to even scrape together the opportunity to grace the hardwood when the playoffs begin. With the personnel changes, and coaching change from Mike Brown to Mike D'Antoni, the Lakers have been disastrous while trying to find some semblance of stability and an identity. Going down the list there are plenty of bones to be picked with each player.

Steve Nash is handling the ball less than he's accustomed to. The "post" isn't always cleared out for Dwight Howard and he isn't the number one option. Kobe Bryant is now actively becoming a playmaker more than a shot taker.

Still, Pau Gasol takes the cake in the "strange things are happening to me" montage category as he tries to find his niche with the team.

Whether it's for the best or the worst remains a point of contention, but what is without question is the fact that Gasol is having to make these adjustments against his will. Pau believes he should start and that he should play next to Dwight Howard; that two big men can play side by side and be effective still. T.J. Simers sat down for a cup of coffee with Gasol in New York as the Lakers prepare to play the Brooklyn Nets, and the Spaniard had plenty to say in regards to his current role with the team, his future, and his relationship with Mike D'Antoni. Most telling? When asked if he could see himself dealing with this for another year he called it a "possibility" to ask for a parachute out of Los Angeles. Pau Gasol will be a massive $19,285,850 expiring contract once the 2013-2014 NBA season is under way.

"If this coach stays and Dwight Howard remains with the Lakers," I asked, "what about you?"

"It would be hard for me to deal with another season knowing the facts you just mentioned," said Gasol, 32 and with one year remaining on his contract.

"So do you ask for a fresh start elsewhere?"

"It's a possibility," he said, "yes." - T.J. Simers, L.A. Times

There are a handful of diamonds to dig out of in this mine of an article. Pau Gasol has had to adjust his game dating back to last season when Mike Brown replaced Phil Jackson; the beginning of his descent into becoming a "stretch" big man while he clearly and starkly believes he is most effective in the post. Nearly every other game there's a poke from Pau discussing his need to be in the post and in the game in the fourth quarter.

"I'm fortunate to be doing what I am for a living and being highly rewarded for it," Gasol said. "But it hurts me that this unique opportunity we have with such good players is not being maximized." - T.J.
"Dwight is a huge presence defensively," said Gasol. "But in a perfect world I'd love to see us dominating as an interior couple, thereby making everything easier for our teammates. - T.J.
It's clear this deep into the season without any sign of change on the horizon that Mike D'Antoni and Pau Gasol will remain far apart in their philosophies, which was a concern when the hiring of D'Antoni came to fruition. Just a few weeks ago Pau Gasol and Mike D'Antoni had dinner in an attempt to discover common ground. Unfortunately, it appears it wasn't constructive, and they've apparently regressed since then.

"It was an effort on our part to try and come to an understanding," Gasol said. "But I don't think it's translated to an understanding. Nothing significant has happened; it's probably even gone a little backwards." - T.J. Simers, L.A. Times

Whether the two can continue to co-exist (or if they are at all currently) is a serious question. Pau Gasol is noted for his professionalism and putting his head down, but interviews like this very one isn't exactly fast tracking understanding between himself and his coach. This is all without mentioning the "passive aggressive" shots they've been taking at one another.

Pau Gasol on sitting out late in game:"I'm a competitor & think I bring a lot to the table.
To which Mike D'Antoni took it upon himself to respond to.

Mike D'Antoni sounded exasperated before Wednesday's game against the Phoenix Suns when asked about Pau Gasol's reaction to his fourth-quarter benching the previous night.

"Well, you know, 'all for one' didn't last (very) long, did it?" D'Antoni said, sarcastically referencing the Three Musketeers' rallying cry. "Forty-eight-hour shelf life. That's not bad. We'll take what we can get." - Dave McMenamin, ESPN LA

Put it all together and there's a great deal to be made of from Pau Gasol's recent remarks. The fact that he goes as far as to call asking for a fresh start next season is startling, but not surprising. The full article from T.J. Simers has even more substance to bite into. In the meantime, what do you make of Pau's comments?
