It's official, from Kobe Bryant himself. The Lakers starting five will begin their journey together tonight!

And that's all she wrote. After over a week of speculation, Kobe Bryant has confirmed that he will indeed be playing against the Dallas Mavericks to open the Los Angeles Lakers season tonight. How did he confirm this? His Facebook, of course!

More like Mamba IN I'd say. Two hours left folks. Nothing more to say here but let's go Lakers!

The Lakers biggest weakness is the back-up point guard spot. The very talented, but personally troubled, Delonte West is available. How could the Lakers acquire West without incurring significant costs? By making a packaged deal to acquire an old teammate as well.

The Lakers are a franchise known around the world for its star power and huge payrolls. However, for those of us who bleed purple and gold, there are two other things the Lakers are known for: poor point guard play and token "human victory cigars". The Lakers partially addressed the first issue by acquiring Steve Nash, but the back-up point guard rotation leaves much to be desired. This lack of talent could be addressed by signing the recently released Delonte West, which would complete the transformation of having the worst point guard rotation in the league to having one of the best, all in one off-season.

West is supremely talented and would significantly help the Lakers, as fellow scribe Mark Travis discussed earlier. The problem facing the Lakers is the huge cost of acquiring him. Even though the Lakers would be getting him at a significant discount given the Mavericks have branded him as a head case and most teams won't touch him, even the veterans minimum would amount to significantly more than that given the tax implications for the Lakers. It is one thing for Dr. Buss to open his wallet when it comes to acquiring Dwight Howard and Steve Nash, who will generate additional revenue through merchandise sales and TV ratings. It is a more difficult issue to ask him to open his wallet for a back-up point guard.

In order to acquire West, Buss may ask that Mitch find a way to trim the payroll with the particular targets being Steve Blake or Chris Duhon. If West were to sign, there is no need to have both the 3rd and 4th string point guards each making around $4M per year for the next two seasons. But how do you dump two players who aren't particularly good, are owed a relatively high salary given their production, and aren't on expiring deals? The typical answer is you offer draft picks as the sweetener, but the Lakers can't do that seeing as they used them all up in prior deals. The only way to do it is to find another team who would actually want one of those players and could afford to take on the salaries.

It would seem like a stretch to find a team that has the cap space and would be willing to use it on either of those two players. But in fact, there is one team in just such a position and it is the Cleveland Cavaliers. If you think the Lakers have the worst back-up point guard rotation in the league, you are wrong. The worst back-up rotation belongs to Cleveland in the form of Donald Sloan and Jeremy Pargo (not to be confused with former Laker Jannero Pargo). If you are asking yourself who those guys are, don't feel bad. I had to look them up as I had never heard of them either. Thankfully John Hollinger's profiles give a pretty good description of each player:

Donald Sloan - http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/player/hollinger/_/id/4303/donald-sloan

Sloan played extremely well in nine D-League games for Reno, but couldn't back it up at the NBA level for Atlanta, New Orleans and, mostly, Cleveland. Of particular concern is his inability to space the floor, as he made just two 3-pointers at the NBA level in 25 tries. Sloan shot better on long 2s (37.3 percent), but even this was short of where he needs to be.

Defensively, Sloan was a turnstile and needs to get better. Opposing point guards had a 21.3 PER against him according to 82games.com, his Synergy rating was among the league's worst, and the Cavs gave up 8.3 points per 100 possessions more with him on the court. Sloan also had the second-worst steals rate among point guards.

Sloan's passing was his best asset, averaging 6.3 assists per 40 minutes, but his turnover rate was too high -- a common malady for rookies. The major concerns, however, are that he doesn't space the floor and doesn't defend. Those two weaknesses likely consign his career to 10-day increments going forward.

So the Cavs' back-up point guard can't shoot, can't defend, and is likely going to live on 10-day contracts. Steve Blake sounds pretty good by comparison. If you think the Cavs' other back-up is much better you'd be wrong.

Jeremy Pargo - http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/player/hollinger/_/id/6497/jeremy-pargo

A periodic contributor to Memphis' rotating disaster at backup point guard, Pargo had solid translated European stats but shot bricks with the Grizzlies, making 33.3 percent. Given that they brought him in as a scorer, that was a wee bit of a problem.

Pargo had other issues too, like a phenomenally high turnover rate and an inability to draw fouls, but the crux of the issue was that he couldn't shoot. As a finisher, he was solid, making 60.7 percent at the rim, but outside the restricted area he shot an unfathomably bad 24-of-102. That figure includes 3s, but he was actually even worse on the 2s.

Given his limited burn one must assume Pargo isn't quite this bad, but he'd have to be considerably better just to merit consideration for playing time. Also, he permitted an 18.9 opponent PER according to 82games.com, among other generally unimpressive defensive stats, and will have to improve that area as well. All told, he has an uphill battle to regain the minutes bestowed on him in 2011-12.

Given those two descriptions reflect the only two point guards backing up future all-star Kyrie Iving, you could see why Dan Gilbert may actually entertain the idea of paying for Blake or Duhon. In regards to the salary cap, Cleveland committed $54.2 million this season, but only $28.1 million next year. They certainly have the room to absorb the second year of one of their deals, but would likely want to send some salary back to the Lakers for the current season to ensure they don't go over the salary cap of $58 million.

This is where the Lakers could address the second thing they are known for: having a human victory cigar on the end of the bench. During the Lakers' title runs, there always seemed to be a player who would come in at the end of blowouts and was given the aforementioned "loveable" title. The Lakers have since traded away the two players that most exemplified that definition (Luke Walton and Adam Morrison), but they could look to reacquire Luke Walton as a means of facilitating a deal to move Blake or Duhon.

Walton is owed $6.1 million this season but is on an expiring contract. The Lakers could offer up Blake or Duhon plus Devin Ebanks and Earl Clark in exchange for Walton. Ebanks and Clark both have one year left on their deals and are only owed $1.0 and $1.2 million respectively. Pairing them both with Blake or Duhon would mean that the deal for Walton would be a wash financially this season.

Cleveland would get an upgrade at back-up point guard with the only expense being an additional $4.0 million next season when they have plenty of cap space. At that point the contract of Blake or Duhon would become a great trade asset as an expiring deal to send to a team looking to move a good player for salary reasons. They would improve slightly at the small forward position with Ebanks, and they can take a one year flier on Clark.

For the Lakers, the deal saves no money this year but would save them a significantly amount next year. The reduction of $4 million in salary by not having Blake or Duhon next season could result in tax savings of over four times that amount, or over $20 million total. That type of savings may be enough to convince Buss to open his wallet this season and add West and the subsequent tax hit knowing that next year won't be as painful.

As for the Lakers rotation, Ebanks is likely the best back-up small forward the Lakers have but they could do without his services just fine. Mike Brown has been trying to play Antawn Jamison there, despite the fact that the consensus among fans is that he is a power forward. Another solution, which I prefer, is to give Kobe some minutes at the small forward position, especially when the opposition goes small. Doing so would provide additional playing time for Jodie Meeks who can provide plenty of spacing for the offense as the best shooter off the bench. Walton would also be around in case of emergency and may in fact be a reasonable option given his defensive short-comings could be masked by having Howard behind him and his passing skills would fit in well with Nash and Gasol (not to mention Howard finishing lobs).

The last benefit of such a trade and subsequent signing is that the Lakers would be moving three players and bringing on only two. This reduces the roster from 15 to 14, something they have tried to do each year. This leaves an open roster spot just in case a deal presents itself at the deadline should the Lakers decide to add one final piece. Should a solid veteran suddenly become available, having an open roster spot, not to mention Walton's expiring contract, could help facilitate a transaction.

The Lakers should do everything in their power to see what it would take to land West and solidify the one big weakness still present on this roster. This is just one potential way to do it, but I am sure Mitch Kupchak, the league's best GM, has already put together numerous scenarios and is making calls. In Mitch We Trust.

Projections! Predictions! Previews! With the season finally upon us, all of the off-season analysis can cease as there is real, live, basketball being played. And not of the preseason variety. However, the 2K Sports crew revealed their simulated season results, and the outcome isn't one you'll find much argument with here.

With the season opening for the Los Angeles Lakers in a handful of hours, the 2K Sports team (developers of the wildly fun NBA 2K series. Will gladly play a game of 2K via Xbox) went ahead and did what everyone, everywhere, has been doing - they put up their predictions. However, they actually simulated a season of NBA 2K and compiled a very nice season preview post over on their Facebook page. To kick things out, over the full 82 game season, this is how the standings wound up.

8. Philadelphia 76ers 38-44

Yep, 62 wins for the Los Angeles Lakers, tied for league best with the Miami Heat, and just barely edging out the Oklahoma City Thunder. Other interesting notes, the Golden State Warriors managed to squeeze into the playoffs at the 7 seed, just above the Minnesota Timberwolves. Surprisingly absent from the Western Conference playoffs? The Dallas Mavericks. Out east, the Milwaukee Bucks make a playoff appearance, a game ahead of the Andrew Bynum led 76ers.

Once the smoke settled, the NBA Finals were finally aligned. And yes, you guessed it, it was a Lakers-Heat battle of the #1 seeds. Who won the title in the end?

This set up the NBA Finals match-up that many fans around the world wanted: Lakers vs. Heat, with Kobe and LeBron squaring off for the first time in an NBA Finals. Based on their two head-to-head wins in the regular season, Los Angeles had home court advantage in the series despite identical 62-20 records. But that advantage was short-lived, as the Heat stole game one at Staples Center, and led the series 3-2 after taking two of three in Miami. But much like the 2010 Finals, the Lakers were able to make good on their home court advantage and took the series in seven. Kobe Bryant's game-high 28 points were enough to win him a sixth title and bring the Lakers their 17th NBA championship.

Looks good to me. Interestingly enough, both Ben Rosales and Wondahbap predicted the Lakers to win 62 games, and beat the Heat in the NBA Finals, but in six games.
With tip-off just a few hours away, Kobe Bryant seems fairly certain that he will play tonight despite a foot injury.

According to Beto Duran of ESPN Radio in Los Angeles, Kobe Bryant said that he is 85% sure that he will play tonight. Duran also adds that Bryant did a lot of running after shootaround this morning, which is an encouraging sign, and had this quote from Kobe on why he is not concerned about missing practice.

"I know the offense. Ran Princeton in high school. Second nature to me."

How many natures does Kobe have? Because it sure seemed like the triangle was second nature to him over the past decade.

Bryant also put on his lab coat and broke down what exactly has been bothering him.

"Just bruised like crazy. All swelling trickled down to tendon right below cuboid bone. It was painful to walk on. Swelling went to tendon that runs beneath foot and I couldn't put any pressure on whatsover."

Here is what Kobe, who took part in the entire shootaround session today, had this to say about his status going forward:

"(We'll) wait and see if gets worse this afternoon. If it doesn't, it's something you can play through, if it gets worse then shut it down."

In the event that Bryant plays, he will wear shoes with a thicker sole to give him more cushion.

It is no surprise to hear Kobe being optimistic about his status for tonight as this evening's game is a landmark one in the history of the Lakers' franchise and it wouldn't be the same without Bean. That said, it seems like the stability that Dwight Howard and Steve Nash have added made Lakers fans a lot more open to seeing Bryant sits in hopes of having him at 100% the first time he touches the floor.

We'll keep you updated on the situation, but right now it seems like Kobe Bryant will play tonight.

Silver Screen and Roll's staff commits on paper to how the season will pan out. Its roundtable predictions time!

Regulars around these parts will know the drill. Prior to major events, the writing staff of Silver Screen and Roll takes the time to put pen to metaphorical paper and bare their souls and expertise to the world so that the metrics can be used to make them look foolish later. Without further ado, the roundtable predictions of the crack SSR writing staff.

I'm neither alarmed by nor totally dismissive of the Lakers' poor performance in the preseason. I don't think it predicts anything about their ability to win the title this year, but I do think it shows how the new roster will need time to get comfortable with each other and find the right groove. (Not to mention adjusting to this hybrid Princeton offense, which I'm not sure is worth the trouble.) We already knew those things. There will be occasions when injuries or age have the Lakers looking like a disappointment. There will definitely be times when Mike Brown seems out of his depth, and in fact he might be out of his depth. I think he'll come through it okay, though, and in the long view all that matters is getting to this team to the playoffs as a healthy and cohesive unit. Brown, with the help of an excellent training staff and front office, can manage that. And actually, I think he and the squad will come together fairly quickly and post the same regular-season record they did in 2010 and 2011. I like Dwight Howard to win yet another DPOY award, and I even like him as an MVP candidate if LeBron somehow stumbles. This is really going to work, people. It's going to be incredibly fun and occasionally awesome to watch. In June, the Lakers will overcome Miami's home-court advantage in the Finals and knock off the Heat in five games for the organization's 17th banner.

Even as what would amount to a 51 win team (prorated over a 82 game season), the Lakers were still very middling last year. They needed to get better on both ends of the court...which they very well may have done. Defensively, I expect the Lakers to improve leaps and bounds immediately with Dwight Howard on the court. In his few games of preseason action, there was such a stark difference on his activity versus Andrew Bynum's that, paired with how much better he made mediocre defensive players in Orlando, it's easy to think that LA's defense will be suffocating. Offensively, the team could take months to adjust to one another, but over that stretch I can see the defense making up for the confusion on the scoring end.

The key for the Lakers was getting to the Finals; Oklahoma City was the most troublesome matchup for LA, especially with Serge Ibaka and Kendrick Perkins able to give Pau Gasol and Dwight Howard the most one-on-one trouble as any duo in the league. However, with the Harden trade, I feel like the Lakers are much better suited not only offensively without his defense on Kobe, but also defensively in regards to staying in front of only two of the best 20 players in the league, rather than three. It's not a forgone conclusion that the Lakers can get past OKC--how can you underestimate Durant and Westbrook?--but the prospects just got a lot better. Moving onto the NBA Finals, the Lakers should have a decided advantage against both the Celtics and Heat looking at the strength of their potential play inside.

It's always championship or bust with this team, but even moreso this year. With the talent the Lakers have on paper, the neighborhood of 60+ wins should be easily attainable. I've written this before, but this team has the potential to be one of the greatest Lakers teams of all-time. It's not just their talent level though--in addition Kobe's insatiable competitiveness, they've added Nash, another psychotic competitor, and Howard, who knows the stink of his "Dwight-marish" offseason will only be washed away with the gleaming gold of a title. This team has a tremendous amount to prove--from the coaching staff downwards--which will only add fuel to the fire.

Even if the offensive and defensive schemes are works in progress, winning certainly patches holes and keeps morale up and the fans happy. No matter what, they should be a must-watch team on a nightly basis. It is going to be interesting to see this group of individuals become a team, and the many angles that will spring up as the season rolls along will be compelling to say the last. Can Dwight redeem himself as a cream of the crop player? Can Kobe play a better brand of basketball? How much does Steve Nash have left in the tank? Will Pau return to form now that the constant looming threat of being traded for X point guard has dissipated? Overall, as long as injuries are managed, they are a lock to catapult themselves into the Western Conference Finals in their first year together. With the Oklahoma City Thunder losing their third best player in James Harden, that road may have become easier, but it would be a mistake to automatically put the Lakers past the Thunder because of it. The NBA Finals will be a stage filled with two of the brightest stars in the league, Dwight Howard who will be defending like a madman after recapturing Defensive Player of the Year honors (and coming in third in MVP voting) and Lebron James (grabbing yet another league MVP). Flanking them will be a batch of fading lights in Dwyane Wade, Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, and Steve Nash. It will be an amazing series of basketball, but in the end there's just too much talent on the Lakers to overcome. Lakers in 7. Number 17 arrives in true Hollywood fashion. An amazing season of basketball is upon us, and it's going to be a great time to be a Lakers fan.

I am sure that the Lakers will encounter a few bumps in the road with so many new faces on board this season, but think Los Angeles has constructed the body of their team so well that they'll be able to survive the season without feeling any tremors. Los Angeles starts off with a home heavy schedule - 11 of their first 16 games on the season taking place at the Staples Center - and I think that will go a long way in getting this team settled in together (less travel days means more time for rest and practice). I think the Thunder losing James Harden is a huge positive for the Lakers (Martin may be able to score, but Harden's off the dribble game was the real game changer and Martin can't match that), which means the Lakers should be a lock to make the Conference Finals. At the end of the season it will come down to whether or not the Lakers came beat the Nuggets, in my mind, because I think they matchup the best with Los Angeles. If the Lakers can get by Denver (and I think they will), then I think they will beat the Heat in the Finals in six games.

I was hesitant to pick the Lakers to finish 1st in the West given that the starters have played less than 30 minutes together, however two things broke their way. The first is the recent trade of James Harden that will almost certainly knock a few wins off the total of OKC, which was the favorite to finish 1st. The second is that the Lakers may not lose all that many games while trying to get acclimated with each other. It has become an annual tradition for the Lakers to be given a fairly easy schedule right out of the gate. Nine of the Lakers first eleven games are at home and they play only one back-to-back. This means the Lakers will have plenty of time to squeeze in practices between game days as they won't be on the road traveling. Furthermore, not only are most games at home, the opposition is pretty weak as only four of those opponents made the playoffs last year: Spurs, Clippers, Mavericks, and Jazz. The Clippers and Spurs are certainly title contending teams but both games take place with the Lakers sporting home jerseys. Look for the Lakers to be favorites in all of their first 11 games, most by a heavy margin. A 9-2 start would not be a surprise.

As for the title, the trade of Harden made the path to the finals significantly easier for LA. Should the Lakers make the finals, they are a nightmare match-up for the Heat. The Heat's best line-up featured LeBron at the power forward spot and Bosh at center. That option is taken off the table the second Howard steps on the court. Howard destroyed a good LeBron team in Cleveland single handedly because they didn't have anyone who could match up with him. He will force the Heat to play big which plays into the Lakers strengths. In the end, if the Lakers remain healthy, they should survive the gauntlet in the West and then over-power the undersized Heat in the finals.

As much as we have talked about the problems the team will have in getting acclimated to the Princeton offense and playing with each other, let us not discount what the sheer talent on this roster will do any given night. In their single appearance alongside one another in the preseason, the starters looked basically unstoppable on offense and that was with about half the sets implemented. To start the year, Mike Brown and company are going to go with what works while they work in the rest of the Princeton. So Steve Nash isn't going to give the ball up early and not become involved in heavy pick-and-roll play, Metta World Peace won't be hoisting as many shots off the dribble, and so forth. The bench will finally get into a decent rotation in which it doesn't have to hold the fort as a standalone unit without any of the starters present, let alone finish out games. These simple changes make all the difference in the world against most teams, as the fact that the starters will be on the floor for the majority of the game will be enough to get a victory on most any given night. There is no doubt that the team will appear clunky and somewhat disjointed out of the gate, but we are talking about the difference from being merely very good as opposed to a rampaging juggernaut. Let us not overstate the problems the team will have. And this is just off the bat, as the team will get much better as the year goes on. So by the All-Star break, you could conceivably see the team start to rip off huge winning streaks as everything falls into place on both ends.

The Thunder being weakened by the James Harden trade helps in this regard as the Lakers go through the West, and gives me more confidence in their first seed placement. Even had it not happened, however, the Lakers will be a terror in the playoffs as their biggest weakness (the bench) will become muted as the starters play extended minutes. The presence of Dwight Howard gives them an indelible edge over whichever team makes out of the East -- Miami is about as much of a lock here as you can get, but there is a small chance Boston could slip through -- and I have the Lakers winning in six over Miami to bring home that seventeenth banner to LA.

I went all-in with Kobe last season, and this summer, by nabbing Steve Nash along with Dwight, so did the Lakers organization. So, it boils down to these questions... Can Kobe still do it? OR has LeBron become good enough that nothing else matters? Or even KD? (I really think Durant is transcendent enough to erase any loss of the Harden trade.)

A loss to LeBron in the Finals stands to crush everything Kobe wants out of his career. Not only does a Finals loss to the Heat push LeBron further down the Jordan path of Greatest of All Time, but it definitively paints LeBron as the best player of this generation without a doubt. Just look at one championship has done for LeBron. Kobe has worked too hard to achieve his own goals to go down as an also-ran in The King James Era. Which is what he's facing with LeBron's ascension to the top. So, if the Lakers meet the Heat in the Finals, just know that Kobe's putting it all on the line to define a legacy, in spite of everything. The best should never lose with talent like Dwight, Pau, Nash and Metta. Unless, there's something better. I'm picking the Lakers to beat the Heat in the Finals in 6 basically because I still have faith in Kobe.

I expect the Lakers this season to perform much as the Miami Heat did in the first season after the creation of their superteam: Dominant at times, vulnerable at others. There's no doubt this Lakers squad has as much or more talent than any we've seen in decades, easily more talent than any of the five previous championship squads that Kobe Bryant has been a part of. Talent alone can win many basketball games, and early on in the season, that's what I expect from this team. Then they'll go through a stretch where the talent isn't enough, playing .500 ball for longer than we're comfortable with. And finally, things will click into place towards the end of the season. Barring a significant injury to one of the four principals, the Lakers should be in prime position come playoff time, and with OKC diminishing their own title chances, it's tough to see anybody in the West posing a significant threat.

It is not, however, tough to see anybody in the East posing a significant threat. The Miami Heat are deserving champions, and they got better, perhaps significantly so. Not by signing Ray Allen (who is still valuable) or Rashard Lewis (who probably isn't), but by establishing a firm identity, They know who they are, and they know how to be the most effective, and those were lessons that took the better part of two years to learn. The Lakers won't have it so rough, because their collection of stars is a more natural fit to begin with, but I suspect the burden will be too much to overcome in year one. I do think this group will reach the promised land at least once, but I don't think it happens this year.

Despite a troubled past and several burned bridges, West would bring a crucial element to the Lakers' bench.

Just about the only thing that you can criticize Mitch Kupchak for during his tenure with the Lakers is his tendency to fill out his roster with conservative additions rather than taking risks. This is no blemish on his immaculate track record, but it's the reason that the Lakers had Jason Kapono on their roster last season instead of Gerald Green and the reason why he drafted Ater Majok with the 58th overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft instead of Isaiah Thomas. Finances certainly play a part in these decisions, but I think Laker fans can agree that they are getting tired of veteran fodder like Chris Duhon filling out out the roster.

To reiterate: Kupchak just had one of the best off-seasons in NBA history, so this is not a criticism, but I think there is one move out there that he can still make in order to improve the team. That would be signing Delonte West.

West was just recently cut by the Dallas Mavericks following two pre-season suspensions for conduct detrimental to the team. The team is painting West in a negative light, but no specific information about the suspensions have come out and his (former) Mavs' teammates have nothing bad to say about him. West also went on a pretty convincing Twitter rant following his suspension in which he suggests no wrong doing on his part and sulks about the damage what the Mavs have said will do the reputation he has tried to rebuild.

The off-the-court issues are not going to go away for West, but that doesn't mean that his on-the-court game isn't worth the trouble. While I do worry about a lockerroom with West and Metta World Peace in it, West would be the absolute perfect back-up point guard for the Lakers, and that is the only part of the roster that looks weak as we kick off the 2012-13 season.

As an aside: I spent a few days with Delonte while covering the Mavericks last season and he seemed like a nice guy.

West has a very complete game and he can play either guard position effectively without sacrificing anything on the defensive end. In fact, one of the strengths of West's game is his perimeter defense, which would give the Lakers at least one plus defender on the perimeter this season, as well as a potential solution to the problems players like Russell Westbrook and Ty Lawson will create for the Lakers. West's off-the-dribble game is about as good as it gets for back-up guards, especially since West combines good playmaking (he's posted an assist rate above 20% in every season of his career; for perspective, LeBron had an assist rate of 19.4% assist rate last season) with a great mid-range game (since 2009, West has shot a well above average 43% from 16-23 feet).

West is exactly the kind of player that the Lakers need to lead their second unit. We know what Steve Blake and Chris Duhon can do and neither of them brings anything that even vaguely resembles an off-the-dribble game to the table. West can get into the lane, hit mid-range shots and find open teammates, making him an ideal pick-and-roll partner for whatever big men he would be on the floor with and his ability to defend both guard spots could make him a crunchtime option as well (replacing MWP, of course).

The Lakers are in a financial bind, so adding a player of West's caliber via free agency would normally be impossible at this point of the off-season. But because of the baggage West carries with him, virtually the only contract offers he is going to get around the league are veteran minimum contracts, and that's something that the Lakers can match. Los Angeles would have to trim down their roster in order to sign West, which means either cutting Darius Johnson-Odom or Duhon or trading Steve Blake for a trade exception, a pick or draft rights foreign player, but I think adding West would be a big enough move to warrant those preemptive changes.

The only risk involved with signing West is potentially hurting team chemistry, but West's pursuit of a sound state of mind seems genuine and the Lakers have some of the most respected players in basketball at the helm of the lockerroom to keep him on his toes.

The season may be just hours away, but I think that Delonte West coming available is big news for contenders and I think the Lakers should pounce on him to deepen their already stellar roster.

Kobe Bryant is now considered a game time decision for tonight's season opening match-up against the Dallas Mavericks. The Black Mamba has taken to Facebook to talk about the status of his foot which is "much better than it was a week ago".

It has arrived! Opening day for the NBA, and specifically the Los Angeles Lakers, is here. And yes, already, not even a single game into the season, there is uncertainty to be had for the purple and gold. We've been covering every update here at Silver Screen and Roll in regards to Kobe Bryant's foot since the injury first went public (Bryant suffered the strain in a preseason game against the Sacramento Kings. Strategic sabotage from long time enemies, we see it.), and it still remains unclear as to when he will be ready for action again. The status attached to Bryant for tonight's game against the Dallas Mavericks is "game time decision" after missing Monday's practice.

Game time decision you say?

Mike Brown: Kobe, we think it's best you t-

Kobe juts his jaw out and glares over at Mike Brown menacingly as if he was the basketball and there were five seconds left on the shot clock.

Mike Brown: Took about 23 to 25 field goals tonight to keep the offense steady as the Princeton is still in the works!

With the first two games in the Lakers schedule being a Mavericks team facing a few injuries, it seems fairly safe to assume that a Dirk-less, Curry-filled Mavs squad is a perfect opportunity to let Kobe take a night off while the rest of the Lakers talent handles business. Heck, make it two games with a rebuilding Portland squad on Halloween if the foot isn't ready to support all of Kobe's greatness stride for stride.

As it has been lately, Kobe jumped on his Facebook (which I still have a hard time believing is actually him at times) and gave his thoughts in regards to his injury.

Getting stronger. Not sure what it means for tomorrow night just yet but it's much better than it was a week ago when I could barely walk. I hate not practicing. It drives me crazy! The training staff has been great. Mr. Laker, Gary Vitti, and the great Judy Seto (the first female trainer in the NBA) have been working their magic.

I will know more after shoot around tomorrow am. It's still painful to raise up on my toes but, it's strong. The decision to be made is whether the injury can heal while playing on it or if it will make it worse. Either way, I'm excited about the start of the season. Hopefully we can win a game or two finally ;-)
Till tomorrow..
Mamba out

As I black the winkie face at the end out of my memory with a sharpie, Kobe does make an important distinction. This isn't simply about whether or not he can play on the foot tomorrow, or in the near future. It's whether if playing on it will allow it to properly heal or worsen the condition. More when it comes in, most likely in the form of "Kobe did not participate in the afternoon team shoot-around and is still a game time decision per Mike Brown".
