The Lakers reportedly went as far as telling Juwan Howard that the head coaching gig was his if he wanted it.

The Lakers’ 47-day coaching search was by all accounts conducted in a thorough and methodical way, living up to Rob Pelinka’s promise. The team eventually found their new leader in Darvin Ham, who they believe will instill, in their own words, “a no-nonsense and hard-working approach” to the organization.

But before they settled on an agreement with Ham to be the 28th head coach in the franchise’s history, the Lakers’ eyes were reportedly trained on someone else. Apparently, just like the last time they hired a new coach, the Lakers weren’t able to land their first-choice candidate. Above the rest of the numerous names they were linked to, the Lakers reportedly favored current University of Michigan head coach Juwan Howard.

According to veteran NBA insider Marc Stein, the Lakers were dead set on giving Howard the keys to lead the team. Stein reported on his Substack that the Lakers went as far as to imply to Howard that the head coaching gig was his if he wanted it.

The most interesting thing I’ve heard while we wait for Ham’s official introduction is that, according to the latest buzz in league coaching circles, Michigan’s Juwan Howard was the Lakers’ preferred candidate among the various coaches to whom they were linked who were under contract elsewhere and thus ultimately unavailable — ahead of Philadelphiaʼs Doc Rivers and Utahʼs Quin Snyder.

The Lakers, I’m told, made such strong overtures to Howard that the implication was clear: The job was his if he wanted it. As covered here on May 2, Howard made it clear in turn throughout the Lakers’ 47-day search that — despite his long associations with both James and Lakers vice president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka — he had no interest in leaving behind the college game at Michigan and the opportunity to coach sons Jace and Jett next season.

Obviously, that didn’t end up working out, as Howard reportedly didn’t even bother to sit down with Pelinka and Co. for an interview. Howard, who was a teammate of Pelinka’s during their shared time at Michigan, was also considered for the coaching vacancy in 2019 when he reportedly impressed the front office during the job interview.

But this time, it was Howard who denied the Lakers’ advances despite having ties with both Pelinka and LeBron James — for good reason. It seems Howard is steadfast in coaching his sons Jace and Jett for the Michigan Wolverines.

Still, there are reasons to think this process can work out for Los Angeles. Remember, back in 2019, both Ty Lue and Monty Williams turned down offers from the Lakers, instead going on to coach two of their biggest Western Conference rivals. The purple and gold then eventually settled on Frank Vogel, who sculpted an elite defense and led the Lakers to their 17th championship in 2020.

So even though Ham, like Vogel, reportedly wasn’t their first choice, the franchise is still surely hoping that their new head coach can lead them back to the mountain top.

The Lakers have officially announced Darvin Ham, who they expect to bring a fresh and competitive culture to the franchise.

A week after reports first leaked that the Lakers had agreed to a deal with Darvin Ham to be the franchise’s 28th head coach, the team itself officially announced the hiring on Friday.

Ham returns to the city and franchise where he began the NBA portion of his coaching career a decade ago. After spending a pair of seasons in Los Angeles, Ham solidified himself as one of the most respected assistant coaches in Atlanta and Milwaukee.

General manager Rob Pelinka released the following statement on the hiring of Ham:

“When someone begins his NBA coaching career at the G League level and goes all the way through playing an integral role on the front bench of an NBA Championship team, it really speaks to a certain strength of character. Our players and fans will immediately identify with Darvin’s no-nonsense and hard-working approach, which we feel will bring toughness and a competitive edge to all we do,” said Pelinka. “When you add that to Darvin’s sophisticated grasp of in-game strategy and deep knowledge of the game of basketball, we have the ideal coach for this next chapter in Lakers history. We could not be more honored and proud to name Darvin Ham as our new head coach.”

Ham’s hiring has been nearly universally approved and celebrated over the last week. The night of his hiring, both LeBron James and Magic Johnson shared excitement at the appointment of Ham.

Giannis Antetokounmpo called Ham the “right fit” for the Lakers after spending most of his career with Ham as an assistant coach of his with the Bucks. More recently, Draymond Green spoke passionately about Ham’s appointment and what that meant to him as a fellow Saginaw, MI, native.

Strapped for resources to make any long-lasting moves of impact this summer, the Lakers may come closest in doing so with their new head coach.

George Karl, the then bespectacled head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks, stood from his chair and called a timeout.

It would be there, in that huddle, where Darvin Ham’s name would be etched into the basketball lexicon forever.

Karl preceded to draw up a play on the back of two observations:

1) the team’s vast collection of perimeter shooters and...

2) his stocky forward’s keen ability to make reads on the fly.

These were realizations that were informed rather than sheer hunches, but the execution and the effectiveness of his idea, however, were a gamble made in the dark. And it would be up to Ham to bring it to the light.

The action first called for Ham to receive the ball in the strong-side post. On the weak side, the likes of Ray Allen or Michael Redd would then sprint to the opposite corner with the velocity of a cast-iron ball shot out of a cannon. They would get to their destination, free of their defender, after a teammate’s timely pick helped create the pocket of space. A “Hammer Screen” (or action), would be a mainstay in the NBA lexicon for years to come.

Ironically, Ham rarely, if ever, found himself on the receiving end of his namesake. Nor even serving as the screen-setter.

Instead, his job was to get the shooter the ball. He would catch the rock, immediately turn baseline (sometimes falling out of bounds in the process) and then fire a rocket of a pass to a now open teammate for a three. A selfless maestro within a symphony of movement.

The play design’s blending of shooting, playmaking and motion has only evolved since Karl’s initial ATO. It has seeped into modern playbooks with countless variations and homages to the original recipe. Each building upon the past through experimentation and an embrace of the unknown.

In terms of what happened to that burly big with the passing chops who the play was named after, he’s en route to Los Angeles, where soon, he’ll be the one holding the whiteboard, tasked with once again proving that sometimes gambles pay off.

When it was first reported that Ham would be the next head coach of the Lakers, the knee-jerk reactions to the hiring ranged from everywhere from wildly positive, to lukewarm thumbs ups in the middle, and one notable local columnist even asking the question: “Darvin, who?”

While the latter sentiment is a bit preposterous given Ham’s career as both a player and most recently with his success as an assistant, the signing does buck the typical trend for the team. For example, among the franchise’s last ten head-coaching hires, only Luke Walton had no previous experience at the helm. Ham will be the latest.

Although he does not boast the lofty previous work history that a Doc Rivers, Terry Stotts or even Kenny Atkinson has — all whom were in contention for the opening — what Ham does possess is the element of mystery. He is a face-down card whose other side can be anything and everything. He has no floor, no ceiling, only an open window of possibilities.

Ham, more than any other candidate linked to the team during their vetting process, offers the Lakers a rare chance in injecting upside back into what has become an increasingly short-term, conservative and generally stale organization.

Between their bloated cap sheet, reliance on big (also old) names and a cupboard bare in the way of draft picks, the team has very few avenues in acquiring long-term impact this summer. Ham may present the closest proxy to do so.

Like acquiring a blue-chip caliber prospect the club can build around, Ham will need to have the right infrastructure and support around him in order to reach his full potential. This will not be without its hurdles, however.

Unlike most first-time head coaches, Ham will not only face the uphill battle of earning the respect and buy-in of a locker room, but also attempt to do so on a team with clear win-now objectives due to the presence of LeBron James and Anthony Davis on the roster. A difficult ask for any coach, but an aspect of the job that Ham may relish in tackling head-on.

“Everyone is like, ‘He’s a rookie head coach, going in there to work for the Lakers with all those veterans,’ but don’t get it twisted,” former team coach Mike Brown, who brought Ham onto his staff as a developmental assistant during the Lakers’ 2011 season, recently told The Los Angeles Times. “I would like to see who would be the first to challenge Darvin or roll his eyes because he will stand his ground. And he will make sure his point gets across and gets across within an authority a situation like that may need.”

Beyond the dynamics with his roster, Ham will also have to navigate and uphold his working relationships with those on the basketball operations side of the organization. It’s an area of importance that the team’s former head coach, Frank Vogel, could attest to after the two sides splintered this past year.

Fortunately, there are signs that Ham and those in upper management may have gotten off on the right foot.

Unlike Vogel, Ham has reportedly been granted a “large amount” of autonomy that not only includes selecting his own coaching staff, but also, assurances that senior advisor Kurt Rambis, will not be a regular presence in coaching meetings. This presents the exciting chance for Ham to sculpt his coaching style in his own image and no one else's.

Although it took them some time to do so, Ham’s hiring feels like a notable step in the right direction for the Lakers. Despite his previous ties with the team, the move does not at all feel like it was made through the same insulated lens that this brain trust’s decisions often fall prey to.

No. This is something creative, inspired and a choice that could yield dividends not only now, but perhaps even into the future.

There will be bumps in the road. Mistakes will be made. Debates on whether the risk of hiring a first-time head coach for this team was worth it. These are simply the side-effects that come with making this type of decision, and when taking any chance. A home-run caliber swing sometimes results in a strikeout.

Back in 2011, when recounting how his near-fatal shooting years earlier at age 14 impacted his outlook on life, Ham discussed how he chose to turn his childhood tragedy into a learning lesson. Something that has followed him, and molded his philosophy in everything, including coaching.

“I’m not afraid of failure, or success,” Ham said. “I’m only afraid of not being authentic, or sticking to my principles.”

This is a mindset the Lakers may also look to follow. A fearless pursuit of the unfamiliar, something new, something better, even if its home is found somewhere in the dark.

After their long, extensive search process, the Lakers made the right call in picking Darvin Ham as the team’s next head coach.

The Lakers long, long search for a head coach culminated on Friday with the team reportedly hiring Darvin Ham. While the team still has not officially confirmed the hiring, congratulatory messages from LeBron James and Magic Johnson — the latter of which was an advisor in the hiring process — and Giannis Antetokounmpo all certainly indicate it’s a matter of when, not if, the Lakers make it official.

On today’s episode of “Can U Dig It,” a podcast by the Silver Screen & Roll network, Christian and I react to the news of Ham’s hiring after having multiple days to process it. The team conducted a very thorough search and ultimately landed on the candidate both of us have felt was the No. 1 realistic option for some time now.

The focus now switches to who Ham will surround himself with as he begins building out his coaching staff. We look at some of the names that will likely come up in the process including Terry Stotts, Kenny Atkinson and Steve Clifford as well as other less likely options like Phil Handy or James Borrego.

There’s also a discussion on whether giving Ham full autonomy on hiring his staff as a first-year head coach is too much of a risk given how the Lakers’ last first-time head coach, Luke Walton, did not do a great job surrounding himself with veteran, qualified voices on staff.

Both LeBron James and Magic Johnson took to Twitter to endorse new Lakers head coach Darvin Ham.

During the team’s 2019 coaching search, LeBron James and his representatives of Klutch Sports Group had let the Los Angeles Lakers know that they approved of Darvin Ham as a candidate to be the team’s next head coach.

Fast forward three years, and the now-former Milwaukee Bucks assistant has been hired, and it’s fair to say that — as was reported during the search — James is still very much a fan of his, one coach and three seasons later:

But in all seriousness, Ham’s hiring getting LeBron’s sign-off here is obviously, functionally, a much bigger deal (With all due respect, Magic, if you’re reading this. I’m only saying that because he’s still playing!).

Because, not that this ended up mattering all that much given that the Lakers won a title, but LeBron was hardly this publicly effusive about Vogel’s hiring, and him being fully bought into Ham on day one is certainly good news. And as for Magic’s endorsement, it is another example of how well-regarded Ham seems to be in league circles.

So while only time will tell how his tenure ultimately plays out, at the very least, it’s hard to say that Ham’s time in Los Angeles is not off to as good of a start as humanly possible. Of the available options, he would have been my pick, and as the tweets above make clear, much more important Laker power brokers obviously agree.

In the years that followed, Ham linked up with Mike Budenholzer and served as an assistant with the Hawks and Bucks. from 2013 through present day.

While the Lakers are taking a bit of a risk by hiring a first-year head coach with a roster that will be built to win now, there are plenty of examples of that working. Ime Udoka led the Celtics deep, deep into the playoffs as a first-year coach and Willie Green had a bit more mild success in New Orleans, though he still made the playoffs this year. The Lakers are banking on that being a trend of sorts and hoping Ham can return them to prominence.

Ham becomes just the second first-time the Lakers have hired in the last 28 years, dating back to Del Harris in 1994. Memorably, the only name on that list is Luke Walton. For his sake and the Lakers, let’s hope Ham’s coaching career has a bit more success.

This developing story will be updated.

After hiring a first-year head coach in Darvin Ham, the Lakers new staff will likely include more experience, including head coaching.

The Lakers finally found their new head coach on Friday evening, hiring Milwaukee Bucks assistant coach Darvin Ham on a four-year deal. As a first-year head coach, Ham represents a leap of faith by the Lakers as they took a risk after he impressed during the entirety of the interview process.

To make up for his lack of head coaching experience, the Lakers appear likely to look toward assembling a talented coaching staff around Ham, as reported by Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

Ham made a strong impression on Lakers in several areas, including his championship pedigree, his commanding presence, history of coaching stars and toughness.

There are a number of options that jump out right away. For one, fellow finalists Terry Stotts and Kenny Atkinson each have head coaching experience. Stotts, though, has reportedly expressed a desire not to be an assistant coach. That certainly could have been posturing considering the Lakers had not hired a head coach at that time, but Stotts will be paid by the Blazers — who fired him after the 2020-21 season — for one more season, which may lead to a decreased sense of urgency to get back into coaching if an assistant spot is all that is open.

Atkinson, meanwhile, is an interesting option. On the surface, Atkinson seems unlikely to move from the Warriors to the Lakers, especially given the fact that Mike Brown’s hiring by the Kings likely makes Atkinson the top assistant for Golden State next season.

However, Atkinson did serve as an assistant coach alongside Ham in Atlanta under Budenholzer until 2016 when he took the head coach position with Brooklyn. A potential upgrade in role or position — like being named associate head coach — could be an intriguing offer.

One name that will likely come up in discussions in the coming weeks, though he does not have head coach experience, will be Phil Handy. The current Lakers assistant coach was never reportedly interviewed for the head coach position despite expressing a willingness to take the step to become one.

Still, he has the respect of the Lakers stars in LeBron James and Anthony Davis, though it remains to be seen how much that will matter in the coming weeks and whether it’s enough for him to stay around. In the wake of the announcement of Ham, Handy took to his Instagram to share his reaction.

There are also other external options available that could make sense. Steve Clifford served as an assistant in 2012-13 for the Lakers alongside Ham as well and is available, most recently coaching the Magic. But the list of currently available coaches with previous head coaching experience isn’t extensive.

Luke Walton and James Borrego were fired this offseason from the Kings and Hornets, respectively. It feels pretty safe to say the former will not be an option but nothing would immediately rule out the latter. Scott Brooks was someone the team reportedly pursued last year as an assistant and were once linked to for this head coaching search, though he feels like another longshot option.

Outside of that, the Lakers were not linked to anyone in their search that had head coaching experience and are available, so a new name may pop up in the process as well. But getting an experienced staff around Ham is imperative and a great early sign for the Lakers.

The Lakers began their in-person interview process this week, starting with former Blazers coach Terry Stotts with interviews with Darvin Ham and Kenny Atkinson to come.

The Lakers have reportedly begun the next step of their search for a head coach with an in-person interview with the Terry Stotts on Tuesday, according to multiple reports. Stotts is one of three candidates that are reportedly finalists for the position along with Darvin Ham and Kenny Atkinson, the latter two of which will have their in-person interviews.

The in-person interview process included meeting with Lakers owner Jeanie Buss, who was not part of the initial stage of interviews. As noted, the interviews took place in person in Los Angeles.

Stotts was considered one of the early favorites alongside Ham in the initial stage of the interview process. Depending on their thought process for next season, one aspect that could make him an intriguing option for the Lakers is his willingness to reportedly coach Russell Westbrook.

Stotts’ success in Portland offensively does make him an interesting candidate. It would be a drastic change from the defensive-minded Frank Vogel that coached the team over the last three seasons. But as a retread option who had an unceremonious ending in Portland isn’t the most appealing of options overall.

For as slow as the whole process has been, these final stages should mean the Lakers are finally nearing the hiring of a head coach.
