A week after stating he was 100% fit, Kendrick Nunn has reportedly not yet taken part in 5-on-5 work yet with the Lakers.

If you thought Kendrick Nunn’s declaration of being 100% healthy was the end of his injury saga, then you must be new around here.

Nunn did an interview with Spectrum Sportsnet last week in which he declared he was back to full health. That felt like the end of the injury updates as it comes to Nunn, updates that have stretched out 11 months now since his initial injury.

But the latest report may slightly contradict Nunn’s self-diagnosis. In a recent mailbag piece, Jovan Buha of The Athletic revealed that Nunn has yet to take part in 5-on-5 games yet.

Nunn recently spoke with Spectrum SportsNet about his health and said he feels 100 percent. He has been training with the younger Lakers – Reaves, Johnson, Wenyen Gabriel, Talen Horton-Tucker, and Mason Jones – during their Monday through Thursday offseason workouts. He hasn’t resumed five-on-five play yet, which is the next big hurdle. It seems like he should be ready to go by the start of training camp, but recovery isn’t always linear.

Well, that doesn’t seem great!

To be fair, Nunn feeling 100% and not playing in a 5-on-5 game yet may not be mutually exclusive. It could be as simple as there not being enough guys at the Lakers facility to play a full 5-on-5 game.

At the same time, there are a number of other places he could be playing 5-on-5 games if he was cleared and/or able. LeBron obviously played a game at the Drew League. The Rico Hines runs are a very common place where athletes play in the offseason. Nunn hasn’t been spotted at any of them yet.

The optimistic outlook could be that Nunn is playing it safe and cautious, trying to avoid any injury and fully rehab before the start of training camp. The pessimistic point of view focuses on the fact that Kendrick Nunn is expected to contribute this upcoming season and hasn’t played in a basketball game since last preseason.

Nunn’s demeanor in his interview with Spectrum was one of someone who seemed relieved to be back and fully healthy. For now, that’s all we really have to go on, but it’s really hard not to be generally pessimistic about another potentially negative injury update for Nunn.

Lakers guard Kendrick Nunn plans to put a frustrating 2021-22 season behind him as he’s back to full strength this offseason.

The frustrations were aplenty last season for the Lakers, but one of the consistent ones throughout the year was Kendrick Nunn’s continued battle to get back on the court.

After being the franchise’s marquee offseason signing, Nunn came in with expectations of being the team’s sixth man. A preseason bone bruise was only supposed to limit him for a number of weeks, but instead, Nunn never made an appearance for the Lakers in the regular season. A number of starts and stops left him, the Lakers and their fans searching for answers.

Ultimately, Nunn was shut down late in the season and headed into the offseason looking to get back to full strength. Fortunately for Lakers fans, he is, in fact, back to 100% by his own account.

In an interview with Spectrum SportsNet, Nunn talked about the improvement of his health this offseason.

“I feel great. I feel 100%, to be honest. Back to where I’m normally playing at a high level.”

Being sidelined the whole season was obviously the worst-case scenario for Nunn’s first year in Los Angeles. Nunn tried to make the best of a bad situation by analyzing the game from the sidelines and admitted that things slowed down for him.

“I wasn’t expecting to sit out that long but I took advantage of it just to watch. Sit back and watch from a different perspective.”

It goes without saying that this is great news for the Lakers with over a month before the start of training camp. Having a healthy version of Nunn — a combo guard with an ability to score at all three levels — addresses some of the Lakers’ backcourt issues. On paper, he makes a ton of sense as a fit alongside LeBron James.

All that is assuming the Lakers keep Nunn moving forward. Among his Laker teammates, only Talen Horton-Tucker has been mentioned as much in trade rumors as Nunn, with the Lakers exploring every possible option to improve upon last year’s disaster. Nunn has virtually no on-court trade value after missing a season, but he is an expiring contract and could be added to a deal in order to match incoming salaries.

Whatever the future holds for him, though, it’s encouraging to see him back on the court, which is great news for both him and the team after a frustrating 2021-22 campaign.

Addressing the media for one of the few, and last, times this season, Kendrick Nunn spoke about a year lost to a persistent bone bruise, and his plans heading into free agency now that he’s healthy.

It goes without saying that it was never expected last summer that Kendrick Nunn would miss the entire season. It should also go without saying that he’s just as frustrated by not being able to play as Lakers fans were all season long.

Nunn spoke to the media for his exit interview on Monday and detailed what the last six months have been like as he has attempted, and repeatedly failed, to get back onto the court for the Lakers. But near the top of the list of things that should go without saying, Nunn also confirmed he would be picking up his player option for next season.

His reasoning for that choice was fairly obvious, as he simply said out loud what most people were probably thinking in their heads.

“Knowing I just took this entire year off, it’s a no-brainer for me to opt-in,” Nunn said.

Nunn’s player option is for $5.2 million next season and makes him one of four players — LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Talen Horton-Tucker the others — that would be guaranteed contracts on the roster next season. Russell Westbrook is likely to accept his player option, and the team holds options for Austin Reaves, Stanley Johnson and Wenyen Gabriel that could all potentially result in them returning.

After playing in the first four preseason games for the Lakers, Nunn missed time with a sprained ankle. But that ankle injury turned into a bone bruise in his knee which turned into an entire season of starts and stops in his rehab.

Nunn repeatedly tried to “ramp up” his activity — a phrase that was attached to him all season long — only to suffer a setback. Eventually after another setback in March, Nunn came to the harsh realization that this would be a lost year.

“Throughout the season,” Nunn said, “I’m pretty sure you’ve guys noticed that I’ve always been trying to ramp up to dive back into the season and there’s been times where – early January, I tried to ramp it up, get set back. And then maybe like the beginning of March, tried to ramp it up again to get ready to play and then another setback. So, that was just telling me that it’s not healed yet and I’m not ready to play. So, I just had to accept that and just take a step back and truly sit back and let that thing heal.”

The updates on Nunn got more and more sparse as the season came to a close. After reports that he could be back toward the end of March, the reports went away for nearly the entirety of March until then-head coach Frank Vogel more or less confirmed Nunn would not be returning this year.

One of the questions about Nunn’s injury is how a sprained ankle turned into a season-ending injury. Nunn noted that it was not any singular injury, but consistent wear and tear throughout his career that culminated in the bone bruise.

“I initially felt it after I twisted my ankle,” Nunn said. “Just going back and thinking — I’ve had plenty of time to think of what actually caused the bone bruise — just over time, the amount of work that I’ve put in, the recovery didn’t match. All that impact and stress, overtraining and not getting enough recovery. You know what I’m saying, doing the ice after every workout, over years and years, that adds up and that impact on your legs and knees, it shows. Wear and tear is pretty much what (the cause) is.”

Frustrations and constant questions about when he would return during the season led to Nunn tweeting out an update that doubled as a call for patience from the fans in late January.

Lake Show I promise I want to be out there helping my team. Stay patient with me. This process has been just as frustrating for me. I’ll return as soon as I’m healthy! It’ll be worth the wait
— Kendrick Nunn (@nunnbetter_) January 21, 2022

On Monday, Nunn talked about his mindset in that moment, and what led to him sending out the tweet.

“I got a lot of feedback throughout the year, whether that’s fans or peers, asking when I’m going to be back, just trying to rush that process,” Nunn said. “And that’s one thing that you can’t and shouldn’t do. I can’t rush my body to heal faster than it naturally does, so I just had to accept that and be as patient as possible with it because it’s frustrating. It took longer than I expected (to heal) so I just had to be patient with it and let it heal. And I wanted to send out (a tweet to) the fans and everybody let them know I’m doing everything I can and I’m waiting to get back as soon as I can.”

Unfortunately for all parties involved, the patience never paid off in production this season. But Nunn will head into the offseason feeling healthy and looking to build back the conditioning, strength and time he lost this season.

“That was extremely frustrating for me because I never saw that coming where I have to take a whole year to get healthy,” Nunn said. “But I had to take that time and I’m feeling pretty good now.

“I’ll definitely take this summer to do my work and be prepared for next season.”

Once he gets on the floor again, he will give the Lakers a weapon they literally did not have, which goes without saying. A healthy summer and time to hopefully, finally, ramp up all the way would have him ready to make an impact for the Lakers next year, and put an end to all the frustrations for him attached to the 2021-22 season, rewarding himself and the Lakers for their patience in the process.

During TNT’s broadcast of Lakers vs. Mavericks, sideline reporter Chris Haynes dropped the latest injury updates on LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Kendrick Nunn.

Way back in November, as the Lakers continued to provide zero clarity on how Kendrick Nunn was progressing from his bone bruise even after he had long exceeded his original timeline and whispers mounted publicly and privately that he wasn’t really anywhere close to a return, I wrote that “it’s nearly time for the Lakers to start considering anything Nunn does eventually give them a bonus, not an expectation.”

It seems that — several false starts and setbacks later — that the Lakers have finally admitted that long-apparent inevitability, as Chris Haynes of TNT reported on the network’s Tuesday broadcast of Lakers vs. Mavericks that Nunn is not coming back this season.

“Kendrick Nunn — who hasn’t played a game all season due to a bone bruise in his knee — has an MRI scheduled later this week, but sources relay he is expected to sit out the remainder of the season to continue rehabbing.”

This is not really a surprise to anyone paying attention. Given that the Lakers only have seven games left in their season and the most recent update on Nunn was head coach Frank Vogel replying “good question” when asked why the team hadn’t ruled him out for the year yet, a return to the floor from him would have been genuinely, jaw-droppingly shocking.

Nunn has an approximately $5.3 million player option for next season, and given that his season-long absence likely led to a complete evaporation of any market for him in a trade or free agency, him opting into that deal and returning next year would seem to be a near certainty. So we’ll see what he can give the Lakers during the 2022-23 campaign, and if we ever get any detailed answers on what led this bone bruise to be so severe for him.

Haynes also provided the latest updates on LeBron James and Anthony Davis, both of whom were ruled out of Tuesday’s game with an ankle sprain and mid-foot sprain, respectively.

“Sources say he (LeBron) is still expected to miss Thursday’s game in Salt Lake City. As for Anthony Davis, if there are no setbacks, sources say the target return dates are either Friday at home against New Orleans, or Sunday when Denver comes to visit.”

You can watch Haynes’ full update below.

If James and Davis really are out until Friday at the earliest, that means that the Lakers could have some real ground to make up in the race for the final play-in spot. After their loss to the Dallas Mavericks, they’re half a game behind the Spurs for 10th in the West, and have to finish at least one game ahead of them to make the play-in because the Spurs own the relevant tiebreakers. Their schedule is also much easier.

So while the Spurs will not be favored in their next game against the Grizzlies — who are incentivized to beat San Antonio and keep the Lakers in the play-in to have a better chance at getting L.A.’s draft pick — the Lakers without James and Davis can’t really be expected to beat any team in the NBA other than maybe the blatantly tanking Portland Trail Blazers. And even that would probably be dicey. So if the two stars continue to experience delays to their returns, this season could be even more cooked than it already appeared.

With just nine games left and Kendrick Nunn unable to get onto the court, the likelihood of him seeing any game time this year for the Lakers feels as remote as ever.

Any last chance hope of Kendrick Nunn making it back for the tail end of the season seems to be slipping out the door for the Lakers. With just nine games remaining on the schedule and a prime practice window for the team to potentially welcome the guard back into the fold, Nunn remained sidelined on Friday, unable to participate in any on-court work as head coach Frank Vogel revealed following the practice.

The team had Thursday off, but practiced on Friday and plans to again on Saturday before playing a game against the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday, but Nunn “didn’t do anything” on Friday.

Nunn has still not made his regular-season debut for the Lakers after playing in a few preseason games (the initial timetable the team gave for reevaluation was 2-3 weeks). And while the hope was Nunn would be able to make a late-March return — as indicated by general manager Rob Pelinka — his inability to get on the court at this late stage indicates a much more unfortunate fate for his season.

As to why the Lakers haven’t ruled him out for the season given his inability to get on the court with the team? Not even Vogel is sure about that.

“That’s a good question,” Vogel conceded. “I haven’t circled back with a recent update on that other than to know that he’s trying... I don’t know when the next MRI is, but the intent is for him to continue to ramp up activity to where his imaging is coming back clean. And I think there have been some improvements, but not enough to see him back in practice.”

Friday and Saturday mark the final multi-day break of the season for the Lakers and, likely, the final practices before a potential postseason berth. Given the Lakers' long-held preference for having players get on-court work before being cleared to join the team, the chances of Nunn getting on the court feel remarkably slim at this point, almost ensuring what has been effectively a lost season for the guard.

Other Lakers Injury Updates

LeBron James, who did not play in Wednesday’s game against the Sixers, did not take part in practice for the Lakers on Friday. Vogel said he remains day-to-day, and will be a game-day decision for Sunday’s contest against the Pelicans.

Likewise, Talen Horton-Tucker did not take part in practice as he continues dealing with a Grade 2 ankle sprain that has seen him miss five of the last 12 games. As with LeBron, Horton-Tucker is considered day-to-day, with his status to be determined on Sunday.

While Anthony Davis’ rehab has been positive, he was not yet able to practice on Friday, and has not even been cleared for the team’s non-contact session on Saturday.

While news about Anthony Davis has been encouraging, there are still no updates on Kendrick Nunn despite him continuing to go through pregame workouts.

When Lakers play-by-play announcer Bill MacDonald said during the team’s loss to the Wizards this weekend on Spectrum SportsNet that both Kendrick Nunn and Anthony Davis were working out “extensively” before the game, it led to hope that the former could finally be nearing his debut in the purple and gold this season.

However, head coach Frank Vogel provided a non-update update on Nunn before Monday’s game, simply stating that there are “no updates” on his status. Like Davis, Nunn has taken part in pregame workouts, but unlike Davis, who responded well to those workouts last week and is moving forward, Nunn remains seemingly no closer to a return to the court.

Here is the video of MacDonald and analyst Stu Lantz discussing both Davis and Nunn working out before Saturday’s game in Washington.

The updates in general on Nunn have gotten more and more sparse as the season has gone along. The last substantial one came on Feb. 25, when general manager Rob Pelinka said the expectation was that Nunn’s bone bruise would keep him out until late March. That came only days after Vogel had a similar timeline, saying Nunn wouldn’t return until “at least March.”

As late March is now upon us, the lack of updates on Nunn seems noteworthy yet again. Vogel noted after the All-Star break that Nunn would begin ramping up again but it was a (likely intentionally) vague update that has had no follow-up.

With the Lakers down to just 11 games remaining, including Monday’s game in Cleveland, the growing sense that Nunn could be out the entire season is very real. Considering that this all started exactly five months ago, with an original diagnosis of 2-3 weeks before being re-evaluated, it’s borderline unfathomable that we’ve reached a point in late March where it feels very likely at this point that Nunn won’t play a game this season.

After surprisingly joining the injury report, Avery Bradley could be set for a return soon while DJ Augustin’s signing could be a hint toward Kendrick Nunn’s status.

While his impact this season has waned and has largely been a negative one, there are areas in which the Lakers not having Avery Bradley available has hurt them. For all his faults, effort has never been an issue for Bradley during his multiple Lakers tenures.

In that sense, the Lakers have sorely missed Bradley, no better showcase of that than Sunday’s loss to the Pelicans in which effort was never apparent. While it was improved in Tuesday’s loss to Dallas, there is an area presently Bradley could provide value.

Bradley’s sudden appearance on the injury report was surprising and has led to him missing four straight games. Before Tuesday’s game against the Mavericks, head coach Frank Vogel provided an update on how Bradley was injured and his status moving forward.

“It’s just, I’m not sure of the exact terminology behind it,” Vogel said. “Something happened, I think, at that last Golden State game that led to some swelling. Until the swelling goes down, he’s going to be out. But it’s not anything that’s supposed to be long-term. He is still day-to-day. He was on the court working, sweating yesterday and he’s getting close.”

The signing of DJ Augustin and the continued strong play from Austin Reaves and Malik Monk could limit some of Bradley’s minutes but in the short term, their presence helps absorb at least some of what Bradley brings to the table.

DJ Augustin signing a hint of Kendrick Nunn's status?

The signing of DJ Augustin was a surprising one both in terms of the player signed and the position as well. Not a glaring area of need for the Lakers — at least as much as other positions — Augustin’s signing was a surprise.

One theory could be that the team could be growing more and more pessimistic than Kendrick Nunn will not come back at all this season and Augustin could at least provide something down the stretch.

Nunn recently began another ramp-up process in hopes of returning by the end of March but Vogel said on Tuesday the signing and Nunn’s rehab were not connected.

“We just don’t know about Kendrick,” Vogel said. “We’re still hopeful that he comes around and is able to ramp up and do it without pain and the MRI comes back where we want to see it. It hasn’t happened yet so until we see him back on the floor, we need help in that position with that skill set.”

At the current rate of the Lakers' play and based on Nunn’s rehab throughout the year, the Lakers may be out of the play-in race entirely by the time he returns. If he even returns.

Avery Bradley remains sidelined with right knee effusion, but could come back soon. Meanwhile Kendrick Nunn is still trying to work his way bay from the bone bruise that has cost him the entire season so far.

As the Lakers emerge from a tumultuous All-Star break to play the Clippers on Friday, they will be missing a couple of key guards in their rotation. Avery Bradley, who has started 42 games for the purple and gold this season, missed the team’s last game before the break against the Golden State Warriors due to an injury that the team listed as right knee effusion. It sounds like the 10-day All-Star layoff was not quite enough time to allow the 31-year-old to completely recover from that ailment.

“Avery is out. Still day-to-day, but he’s going to be out for tomorrow,” Frank Vogel said after the Lakers’ practice on Thursday.

Kendrick Nunn, meanwhile, has missed the entire season due to a bone bruise in his right knee. Attempts to ramp up his rehab to get back into playing shape have been met with setbacks due to the lingering nature of the injury. However, Nunn is going to try again to get back on the court and help the Lakers down the stretch as they make what will most likely be a second straight run at the Western Conference play-in tournament.

“K. Nunn, coming out of the break is going to ramp up his work again and see how the knee responds, but will still remain out,” Vogel said on Thursday.

Both Vogel and Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka expect Nunn to remain out until late March at the earliest. Nunn was signed with the Lakers’ taxpayer mid-level exception last summer, ostensibly to be a backup point guard for Russell Westbrook and a scoring complement to LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Westbrook off the bench. Obviously, that plan has gone awry, just like pretty much everything else surrounding the Lakers’ addition of Westbrook.

Though Nunn will not singlehandedly turn the Lakers’ fortunes around, he could still be a helpful addition down the stretch when (and if) he does return, as the team will once again have to claw their way into the playoffs instead of cruising to the high seed they were widely expected to secure at the beginning of the season.

Elsewhere on the injury report, Davis (obviously) remains out, but Vogel did say that he is off of the crutches he was using last week. LeBron James (left knee sorenesss/effusion) was listed by the team as “questionable” vs. the Clippers — but will likely play, given that Vogel didn’t even mention him in his injury updates — and Carmelo Anthony (right hamstring strain) is probable to play after practicing on Thursday.
