Dr. Karida Brown doesn’t want the Lakers to just be another “non-racist” organization. She explained the difference.

In a month, the Los Angeles Lakers are expected to travel to Orlando to compete for their 17th title, which would put them even with the Boston Celtics for the most championships in NBA history. However, there has been concern from within the team that the resumption of the season will distract from the ongoing fight for equality in justice in the United States.

In an effort to address those concerns, the Lakers hired Dr. Karida Brown as their new Director of Racial Equity & Action.

Brown, an African American Studies and Sociology professor at UCLA, talked about her new role with the team and what she hopes to accomplish during an appearance on ESPN LA 710’s “The Morning Show” on Monday:

“Well, you know, it all starts with education. We don’t know what we don’t know, right? So to get to this point, where the Lakers have committed to transitioning from a non-racist organization, to an anti-racist organization, that is a huge statement, but it comes with a lot of work.

“That’s a journey, and I am committed to taking that very first step, which is immediately institutionalizing an educational component within the organization so that we can all get our minds right in terms of laying out the issues, the vocabulary that is necessary to describe what we are all faced with and encountering in this moment, and to have the analytical frame to really make that change that we say that we want to make.

“Our school systems for the most part don’t do that, in terms of giving us an adequate racial education to understand how systemic racism and anti-black racism operates in this country, so how can we expect an organization to automatically know how to do so?”

Brown explained the difference between a person or organization that “non-racist” between ones that are “anti-racist” in an interview with Broderick Turner of the Los Angeles Times last week:

Brown defined nonracist as being rooted in a “colorblind mindset” in which someone says “I don’t see race, I just see people” and have good intentions toward a “fellow human being.” She defined antiracist as to “insist upon seeing race” and be willing to take “an affirmative position that is against racism.”

Brown is committed to making the Lakers an anti-racist organization, and she outlined how she plans to do that on “The Morning Show”:

“So for me, the first thing that I did was get together a curriculum and instill an educational component that involves a speaker series, where I will be bringing in a lineup of the leading scholars that are working on the issues of systemic racism and anti-black racism as it relates to public health, police violence, how we’re seeing health inequities as they relate to coronavirus. So getting everybody up to speed on that from an educational front is the first step.

“And then we’ve got to open up the hood, and look in the organization and see a lot of what the Lakers are doing right already, because the staff is quite diverse from an organizational standpoint from within.”

The Lakers have had some of the most influential athletes in the world don their purple and gold jersey — from LeBron James to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar — but it’s crucial that the team stands in solidarity with their athletes, especially during a time in history like this one. Brown’s hiring, or something similar to it, was probably long overdue, but it’s necessary, and hopefully the Lakers set the standard here for the rest of the league to follow.

Jeanie Buss held true to the Lakers commitment to not stay silent about racism in the United States.

2020 has brought a lot of racists out of the woodwork, especially in the weeks since Minneapolis police officers killing George Floyd sparked nationwide Black Lives Matter protests.

The Lakers have addressed that movement and the reform efforts it has sparked in a variety of ways, from releasing a statement saying that they “condemn racism, bigotry, violence and prejudice in all its forms,” to supporting their players as they protested, as well as bringing in activist and former Laker Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to speak to the team on a Zoom call and hiring their first ever Director of Racial Equality and Action, among other moves.

While all of that has been going on, there has simultaneously been a movement among some players — including Lakers veterans Avery Bradley and Dwight Howard — that have led calls for the NBA to reexamine its plan to resume the season, and if it’s the best thing for the progress that the Black Lives Matter movement has made. Bradley has been particularly outspoken, recently telling NBA ownership groups that if they care about their players, they can’t remain “silent and in the background” on racial issues.

On Friday, Lakers team governor Jeanie Buss answered that call, posting racist hate mail that she had received in the wake of all these changes, and saying that she wouldn’t be silent about such things anymore, all while calling on other white people to acknowledge the racism that exists in the U.S. (warning, possibly triggering language):

Lakers guard Avery Bradley has been one of the main voices in explaining what the coalition of players who have questions about the NBA restart at Disney World are actually looking to see from the league.

It still appears as though the NBA will eventually restart with the Lakers and 21 other teams heading to Disney World, but a coalition of players — led by Kyrie Irving and Lakers guard Avery Bradley, which counts Dwight Howard as a member — called for “further examination” of the restart plan over the last week, and during that time, we’ve slowly learned more and more about what their goals are.

Howard has said that while he doesn’t think the NBA should come back because of the distraction it would create, the players that feel like him aren’t trying to cancel the season and will support those that choose to go to Orlando. For his part, Bradley has said that the coalition just has questions about the restart, and want to see a real, tangible commitment to social justice from the NBA before they agree to resume.

The Lakers were initially worried that Howard would sit out, but his agent says he hasn’t made a decision yet. The latest reporting is that the team is pretty sure Howard will participate, but is “less clear” on if Bradley will do so.

Whatever those two decide to do, Bradley made it clear in an interview with ESPN that the coalition is more than aware that simply sitting out doesn’t help with advocacy efforts on its own. However, what he says it does highlight is the partnership the players have with the league, and how both entities should be trying to make a difference here, not just the players:

“The actual act of sitting out doesn’t directly fight systemic racism,” Bradley said. “But it does highlight the reality that without black athletes, the NBA wouldn’t be what it is today. The league has a responsibility to our communities in helping to empower us — just as we have made the NBA brand strong.”

Bradley said that if the NBA does have plans to organize league-wide action, those proposals haven’t been clearly communicated to players.

“Don’t put all of the weight on your player to take care of the issue,” Bradley said. “If you care about us, you can’t remain silent and in the background.”

Bradley is absolutely correct, and to that end, the Lakers actually appeared to take some steps in the right direction on Thursday, hiring the franchise’s first ever Director of Racial Equality and Action and announcing that they would make Juneteenth a paid holiday for their employees. But the team and league can’t (and almost surely won’t) stop there, because Bradley is making completely legitimate points.

The (mostly white) NBA ownership groups putting almost all of the onus on the (mostly black) player base to help the Black Lives Matter movement just wouldn’t be a great look. Especially not when — as Rachel Nichols of ESPN pointed out on Twitter — those same ownership groups with vastly more resources than the players (and who profit directly off of their labor) are sometimes not putting their money where their mouth is when they claim to care about their players:

NBA owners are among the richest men & women in America. That money buys incredible influence, could fund entire programs. And in some cases right now, some team owners are giving money to causes/political groups that directly conflict with the causes players are fighting for. pic.twitter.com/QzAvX2d9bK
— Rachel Nichols (@Rachel__Nichols) June 17, 2020

The NBA, NBPA and this coalition of players will continue to try and figure out if they’re going to resume the season or not, and as can be seen by the Lakers’ latest hire, this effort on Bradley, Irving, Howard and others’ part has already started to shift momentum in the league in a positive direction. The next step is the NBA more directly committing to use this restart in Orlando to make the kind of financial commitment to fighting the type of systemic racism that this group of players is fighting against, rather than continuing to put the pressure solely on the players to make a difference.

When (and if) things get to that point, the season actually tipping off on June 30 will seem like far more of a certainty.

The Lakers just made the type of commitment to social justice that some of their players have been looking for.

Numerous NBA players and several members of the Los Angeles Lakers — including Dwight Howard and Avery Bradley — have formed a coalition asking the NBA to show a real, tangible commitment to social justice before they resume the 2019-20 season.

The Lakers took a step forward on that front on Thursday, when the team announced it had hired Dr. Karida Brown as its new Director of Racial Equity & Action. The team says that Brown “will create a curriculum to help the Lakers staff enrich their knowledge on today’s most urgent topics, as well as helping to identify ways the team can be more active and efficient in creating change,” and provided even more information on her qualifications in their official press release:

Dr. Brown is a tenure-track Assistant Professor in both the Department of African American Studies and the Department of Sociology at UCLA. She earned her Ph.D. in Sociology from Brown University in 2016, and an M.P.A. in Government Administration from the University of Pennsylvania in 2011. She currently serves on the boards of The Obama Presidency Oral History Project and the Du Boisian Scholar Network.

“We are very happy to have Dr. Brown join the team,” said Lakers COO & President of Business Operations Tim Harris. “She will play a key role in implementing educational programming on race and racism for our employees and helping us focus on racial equity in our day-to-day functions, as well as empowering the organization to identify ways to be more active participants in affecting real change.”

An oral historian, Dr. Brown is a Fulbright Scholar, and her work has been supported by national foundations such as the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Hellman Fellows Fund. She is recognized for her work writing back into history the lives, stories and experiences of black people around the world. She is the author of two books, Gone Home: Race and Roots through Appalachia (UNC Press, 2018) and The Sociology of W.E.B. Du Bois: Racialized Modernity and the Global Color Line (co-authored with José Itzigsohn, NYU Press, 2020). Dr. Brown is working on her third book, Separate and Unequal, which focuses on the history of racially segregated education systems and its enduring legacies on racial inequality in present day education.

This is a start towards the kind of pledge that the players like Bradley and Kyrie Irving are looking for the league’s ownership groups to make before the players agree that resuming basketball is the best thing for them and the country as a whole.

And good on the Lakers for making this happen on their own, before any sort of league mandate. That’s the type of commitment to listening to what their players want that the team has stood for ever since Jeanie Buss took full control of the organization from her brother, and so while something like this isn’t completely surprising, it’s still encouraging to see them just as dedicated to excellence off the court as giving their players everything they need to be great on it. Especially in contrast to the discouraging report about the internal culture of the organization from around this same time last year, this is another great step in the right direction for L.A.

“More Than A Vote” will seek to raise awareness of African-American voter suppression in the United States, and educate people on how to combat it.

Whether it’s fair or not, LeBron James is credited with the creation of the “super team” era in the NBA. In 2010, James announced that he was taking his talents to South Beach with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in an ESPN television special titled “The Decision.”

Ten years later, James is forming another super team for one the most important “decisions” of our lifetime: the 2020 United States presidential election in November. According to a report by Jonathan Martin of The New York Times, the Los Angeles Lakers star forward is teaming up with Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young, Phoenix Mercury guard Skylar Diggins-Smith and former NBA guard Jalen Rose to form an organization called “More Than A Vote.”

The organization will aim to combat voter suppression, specifically as it pertains to the African-American community in the United States, through social media. Here’s what James had to say about the group’s formation, via Martin:

“Because of everything that’s going on, people are finally starting to listen to us — we feel like we’re finally getting a foot in the door,” Mr. James said in a phone interview on Wednesday. “How long is up to us. We don’t know. But we feel like we’re getting some ears and some attention, and this is the time for us to finally make a difference.”

James told Martin that the death of George Floyd, a black man who died while being detained by Minneapolis police, inspired him to get more involved in politics. James also said that he was motivated by the high-profile athlete-activists that came before him:

“I’m inspired by the likes of Muhammad Ali, I’m inspired by the Bill Russells and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbars, the Oscar Robertsons — those guys who stood when the times were even way worse than they are today,” Mr. James said. “Hopefully, someday down the line, people will recognize me not only for the way I approached the game of basketball, but the way I approached life as an African-American man.”

James and Abdul-Jabbar recently spoke to the Lakers about Floyd’s death and the importance of social activism during a team Zoom call last week. As a team, the Lakers have done a tremendous job of using their platforms to speak out against racial injustice.

Kyle Kuzma is the latest member of the Lakers to say they won’t “stick to sports.”

Over the last several weeks, the Los Angeles Lakers have made it clear that they will not just “stick to sports” right now.

You had LeBron James calling out Fox News host Laura Ingraham for her uniquely transparent brand of dog whistle racism and dropping a video on why he speaks up about issues that are important to him, Alex Caruso criticizing the president and using a pretty solid pun to explain why he’s going to use his platform to speak out when he wants to, and Danny Green joining a police brutality protest in Los Angeles.

In addition, the entire team used their social media accounts to show solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement in the wake of the police killing George Floyd, all while the Lakers organization encouraged players to use their voices for advocacy.

Particularly outspoken on social media has been third-year forward Kyle Kuzma, who has been using his Twitter and Instagram accounts to give his thoughts on systemic racism, Floyd’s death and a whole lot more over the last several weeks. On Tuesday morning, he shared more extensive thoughts in an essay on The Players’ Tribune, fittingly titled “Ain’t No Sticking to Sports.”

https://t.co/YO1ob12Pat
— kuz (@kylekuzma) June 9, 2020

The whole essay is worth a read, with Kuzma discussing the prejudice he encountered as a biracial child at a mostly white school, being called the N-word, America’s history of racism and his thoughts on the police as someone whose grandmother worked was a lieutenant in Flint.

Particularly powerful, though, was Kuzma discussing the fear he still experiences today:

Even as an athlete, I’m still scared when I get pulled over. If I’m driving and I see a cop, I’m checking my rearview mirror for like the next five minutes.

That is the epitome of what this has done to us as black people, living in a racist society.

That’s what we have to fear: the people who are supposed to protect us.

And that fear didn’t come from nowhere.

And before anyone dismisses that fear, keep in mind that if Kuzma were assaulted by a police officer, he wouldn’t even be the first NBA player in the last several years for that to happen to. Thabo Sefolosha was wrongfully arrested and suffered a fracture fibula and ligament damage at the hands of New York police in 2015, later settling a lawsuit for $4 million. Milwaukee Bucks guard Sterling Brown is currently in the midst of a wrongful arrest civil rights lawsuit against Milwaukee police, who tased him in 2018 outside of a pharmacy.

Both men had done nothing wrong.

The point is, no black person, regardless of social status or actual wrongdoing, is safe from the systemic racism plaguing this country. It’s why Kuzma says the demonstrations and protests going on right now are so important, and why he wants to help keep that momentum going into November:

Every time in the past when a black person was killed, we’ve talked about how it’s not right and that black lives matter, and then everyone has just gone back to their regularly scheduled lives.

Shit has to be different this time.

For that to happen, we have to do two things at once — KEEP UP the noise. Keep protesting, marching. Keep demanding CHANGE in the STREETS.

But also demand that change on election day.

We have to vote out people that blindly support spending more on police departments than on healthcare and education. And we also have to vote out the people who aren’t making the change that we want fast enough.

So I’m doing something about it.

I’m launching a voting campaign that’s going to help get people’s eyes on where primaries and elections are being held in every state this year. I’m dropping something very soon.

Since his rookie season, Kuzma has gotten more and more outspoken on social issues, and his growth as a person has been inspiring to watch over the last several years. To that end, I cannot recommend his latest essay highly enough. It’s likely the most important thing any of us will read today.

The Lakers are supporting their players in speaking out and showing solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.

Since Minneapolis native George Floyd was killed on video by local police last week, Black Lives Matter protests around the country and world have raged, with players on the Los Angeles Lakers joining with demonstrators in criticizing police brutality and systemic racism both on social media and — in the case of at least Danny Green — in person.

The team also held a Zoom conference call where both LeBron James and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar were vocal about the issues in a discussion with various members of the organization, and the Lakers supporting all of it is something that hasn’t gone unnoticed by at least one person who was on the call (via Broderick Turner of the L.A. Times):

Lakers coach Frank Vogel and general manager Rob Pelinka also spoke on the call Tuesday.

Team owner Jeanie Buss and Tim Harris, the president of business operations and chief operating officer, were part of the virtual conference as well.

The meeting when for about an hour.

“The Lakers did a great job letting their players have a voice,” one person said. “The Lakers understand what’s happening. They have always been about helping their community and that hasn’t stopped even now when the Lakers and others sports teams are needed the most.”

In other words, the Lakers are not asking anyone in their organization to “stick to sports,” which is probably good, because the players on the team have already made it clear that they have no interest in doing so.

From the sound of it, the organization will be just fine with that.

LeBron James is never going to shut up and dribble.

LeBron James is a basketball player — a really, really good basketball player. Over the course of his 17-year career, James has tallied 34,087 points, 9,353 rebounds and 9,298 assists, something no other player in NBA history has done. He’s arguably the greatest basketball player of all time.

But James is so much more than an athlete, even if some others don’t want him to be. In 2018, James was the subject of a Fox News segment, in which host Laura Ingraham berated the Akron native for criticizing the president using “R-rated” language that she described as “barely intelligible” and “ungrammatical.”

She infamously ended the segment by saying, “Keep the political commentary to yourself, or, as someone once said, shut up and dribble.”

Those incredibly rude and dismissive words, “Shut Up and Dribble,” became the title of a three-part documentary that James and his business parter Maverick Carter executive produce, and much to Ingraham’s chagrin, James hasn’t stopped talking about politics, because the suggestion that we can only talk about our professions is egregious to begin with. In fact, his voice has only grown louder as he makes efforts to promote equality.

On Thursday, James posted an Uninterrupted video inspired by Ingraham’s comments:

The timing of the video isn’t coincidental, either. Not only are there thousands of people across the country protesting against systemic racism and police brutality, but on Thursday, Ingraham appeared on Fox News to defend Drew Brees, who, earlier this week, criticized NFL players that peacefully protested police brutality by kneeling during that national anthem.

Complex Sports noticed a slight difference in the language she used to talk about a white athlete sharing their political thoughts vs. how she described two black athletes doing the same thing, and the contrast wasn’t lost on James, either.

See if you can spot the coded language, and why James might have felt the need to fight back against it:

The double standard is clear, and the reason behind it is just as clear for those that care to see it.

As long as hateful and unapologetic racists like Ingraham feel like they can tell black people like James to stay out of politics, James will continue to use his platform to empower his community — whether they’re athletes or not — to speak out against racial inequality and injustice.

One day James will hang up his sneakers and stop dribbling, but he won’t be silenced just because someone who doesn’t like to hear curse words told him so. Fuck that shit.
