I watched “Space Jam: A New Legacy” and had many thoughts during the process.

This past weekend, I watched “Space Jam: A New Legacy” twice: once in a movie theater, and once at home on HBO Max. I could have watched the movie with the intention of writing a super serious review after the fact, but because it was a sequel to a children’s movie that also didn’t change cinema as we know it, I jotted down every thought I had while watching the movie instead. Those thoughts are below.

SPOILER WARNING: This article contains spoilers for “Space Jam: A New Legacy” and “Avengers: Endgame.” Trust me, it will all make sense in the end.

1. LeBron could have played video games.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but LeBron James still would have been a four-time NBA champion and four-time league MVP if he played half an hour for Pokémon Red on the Game Boy every day. Like, Bronny James is literally a pro gamer and could play for any NCAA team in the country if he wanted to right now. Gaming is not a problem.

2. Hey, the Lakers’ championship ceremony is in this!

The opening credits was just a highlight reel of LeBron’s illustrious 18-year career and, to my surprise, his championship with the Lakers made the cut. Maybe I just don’t know enough about post production in movies and things like that, but I didn’t expect it to be mentioned so soon after they won it.

3. LeBron is a funny dude.

Was LeBron’s comedic acting in “Space Jam: A New Legacy” a little cheesy at times? Absolutely, but in the scenes where he just played an exaggerated version of himself, he was hilarious. The same can be said about his role in “Trainwreck.” He obviously knows how people view him, and it was cool to see him be a good sport about it.

4. This ‘move’ is bad.

“In, out, crossover, shoot” — that’s the move that LeBron has his movie sons work on at the beginning of the movie. With all due respect, that move ends in a turnover nine times out of 10. Then again, LeBron looking at the ball before he shoots the 3-ball shouldn’t work either, but it does.

5. Don Cheadle looks great.

Don Cheadle is turning 57 years old in November and you’d never guess by the way he looks. Like, he could feasibly do a War Machine trilogy with how well he’s aging. Good for him.

6. Dom Ball is just NBA Jam

That doesn’t make what Dom made any less impressive, but the creators would have a compelling case for a lawsuit.

7. Steven Yeun is in this movie?

I genuinely had no idea.

8. LeBron was too hard on Warner 3000.

Privacy and safety issues aside, Warner 3000 wasn’t a terrible idea for someone with a busy schedule like LeBron. There was no need for him to go as hard on it as he did. I get why Al-G Rhythm was mad.

9. What in the matrix hell?

Seriously, what in the matrix hell?

10. The TNT joke was 10/10.

“Bugs Bunny knows who I am?” LeBron asks.

“I may live in a hole in the ground but we still get TNT,” Bugs Bunny says while holding an explosive.

Classic.

11. Is Bugs drunk?

They don’t explicitly say he is, but it’s heavily implied that he’s tossed on some sort of fermented, carrot-based alcohol. Can you get drunk off carrots?

12. Al-G Rhythm is the movie villain; Bugs is the real villain.

He was willing to sacrifice actual human beings to play a basketball game with his friends! That’s kind of sweet, but also incredibly selfish!

13. LeBron as Robin is going to be a meme.

There are a handful of meme-able moments in this movie, but LeBron dressed as Robin is going to get a fair amount of use.

14. Damian Lillard and Dom James have a good relationship.

LeBron’s fictional son will be the reason Dame forces a trade to the Lakers next season.

15. The new Tune Squad jerseys aren’t that bad.

I hated them when they were first leaked but they honestly look pretty cool in the movie. I still think it would have looked better if the circle didn’t extend to the shorts, but I digress.

16. Michael Jordan is going to make a cameo!

Oh, how wrong I was, at least to some extent.

17. AD caught a stray!

“Ayo Brow, I think it’s time for you eyebrows to break up with each other,” James says. “They ugly. Let it go.”

18. I told you that move sucked.

If you know, you know.

19. Oh my god, is Bugs dying?

I thought Bugs Bunny was going to get a Tony Stark send-off, but thankfully he showed up at the end of the movie.

20. That was fun!

I had a good time and the kids in the theater seemed to really enjoy it too. Any serious analysis beyond that is lame.

For Nneka Ogwumike, part of joining the cast of “Space Jam: A New Legacy” was to challenge herself, but another goal was to make sure that every kid who watches the latest film in the series can see themselves on screen.

It’s hard to imagine a situation that would make Nneka Ogwumike nervous.

This is the Nneka Ogwumike who led an opt out of the collective bargaining agreement between the WNBA and the players’ association to “bet on women”. The same president of the WNBPA who then helped to negotiate a landmark deal that set a new standard for what female athletes can and should expect, and then went on Good Morning America to break the news herself.

This the Nneka Ogwumike who had the ball in her hands with the Sparks down one in Game 5 of the 2016 WNBA Finals, facing the towering presence of Sylvia Fowles and finishing over her to deliver the franchise its third title and first in 14 years.

As her teammate Brittney Sykes put it, “Nneka shows you what balance and discipline looks like.... She walks with such grace, she walks with such discipline.”

And yet, to be part of “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” Ogwumike willingly put herself in a position that didn’t make just her — and the stone-cold Diana Taurasi — nervous; it made her uncomfortable. Ogwumike said that she and Taurasi, both members of the Goon Squad along with Anthony Davis, Klay Thompson, and Damian Lillard, were constantly wary of messing up their lines and not appearing like neophytes among their counterparts, who were more familiar being in front of the camera.

So why would Ogwumike consent to be in such an unnatural environment?

For one, it’s “Space Jam.” Ogwumike grew up watching the movie with her sisters, listening back to the soundtrack, not even realizing the impact it was having on her in real time. When her agent told her she was going to be in the new version, her answer was simply, “Say less”.

It was also a matter of personal growth. Ogwumike says, “acting was not easy, but I loved the challenge”. Think about all the accolades Ogwumike has in her basketball career: she’s been a No. 1 pick, a rookie of the year, an All-Star, an MVP, a WNBA champion, and a two-time World Cup gold medalist. She sets goals, and she meets them. Finding a way to challenge herself off the court, even if that task was navigating her movements in CGI, is all part of the process of continuing to grow.

“Nothing grows in a comfort zone really, and acting in that movie was just kind of like a microcosm of that experience in my life,” Ogwumike said. “You can’t care about what other people are saying, do things to the best of your ability, leave people remembering how you treated them, walk in grace... That’s kind of everything that I felt when I was shooting the movie.”

But the main reason why it was important for Ogwumike to be a part of this project is because of what it means to have female representation in this specific movie.

The original “Space Jam” had five NBA players on the Monstars. The updated Goon Squad has two WNBA players and three NBA players, and the women are the only MVPs.

“It’s huge, especially in the time that we’re in, you know we’re experiencing a time in which women’s basketball is catching fire, it’s really igniting,” Ogwumike said. “And so for that representation to be in there, it’s a testament to the time that we’re in, it’s a testament to a new legacy, it’s a testament to I think LeBron, and Warner Brothers’ awareness on what’s important, and having that representation was important.

“Obviously to have 2 WNBA players shows you the growth in the game, it shows you the growth in films,” Sykes said. “It’s always male athletes in videos and movies, but now we’re starting to see more women... it will be dope to show little girls.”

Ogwumike hosted a screening of the new film for youth from Brotherhood Crusade, a charitable organization that describes itself as having “a vision of improving quality of life and meeting the unmet needs of low-income, underserved, under-represented, and disenfranchised individuals.”

And even though the kids had tons of questions about LeBron James afterwards, they were also excited to meet the star who — spoiler alert — gets to dunk on James in the film. Sure, it happens when she’s in her Arachnneka form, but it’s undeniably clear that Ogwumike is making the highlight. That matters.

L.A. Sparks

Nneka Ogwumike took questions from kids from Brotherhood Crusade after an advance screening of “Space Jam: A New Legacy.”

“It’s just amazing to be in the movie, not just for kids to be able to watch it and also me to interact with them, but also in the world that we’re in, I feel like that was a great experience, you know, it kind of signifies what we want to get back to,” Ogwumike said after the screening. “And then also hopefully jumpstarts their interest in basketball, sport, and women in sport too.

“I would hope that they were excited, as excited as I was to be in the movie,” Ogwumike added. “It’s just so meaningful. And I speak from experience growing up and like seeing people on the screen, seeing people on the court that look like you.... I say this all the time, you know, when people think about representation, especially in sport, they think about immediately what we see on the court. And no, it’s about GM, president, media, everyone, whether it’s advocacy or allyship, and so I felt that doing this movie, watching this movie, and I hope that the young kids feel it too.”

It seems like the acting bug has bit Ogwumike; while she doesn’t want to emulate The Rock in terms of being a crossover star, she’d like to try her hand at film again, especially in a role that doesn’t require her to play herself.

It’s all about the pushing her boundaries, so that what initially feels unnatural will feel ordinary. Whether that means she can play big in front of a camera without being embarrassed, or that a female basketball player in a big-time film is expected instead of revolutionary, Ogwumike is all about expanding possibilities. That’s her new legacy.

Lakers star LeBron James got a head start on promoting “Space Jam: A New Legacy” during his final postgame interview of the season, while also giving an update on his health and his status for the Olympics in Tokyo.

The Lakers’ brutal, expedited and injury-riddled season came to a close on Thursday night, and after limping his way to the finish line, LeBron James says he’s not exactly ready to sign up for extra basketball this summer just yet. When asked if he would consider playing for USA Basketball in the Olympics in Tokyo, Japan this offseason, James said there is a different team he wants to suit up for this summer.

“Nah, I think I’m gonna play for the Tune Squad this summer instead of the Olympics,” James said.

And his response begs the question: Does LeBron HATE the United States? Coming up next on Undisputed, we’ll discuss how MJ would NEVER walk away from the game of basketball and his COUNTRY to rest and make a movie before coming back to play basketb... oh, wait, I’m being told he did pretty much exactly that. Never mind.

But rather than help the U.S. bring home the gold in Tokyo, James — who was announced as one of the finalists for the roster — said he’s going to pass. Instead, he made it clear that there is a different opponent he’s locked in on defeating on this summer in a statement that probably made Warner Bros. executives spontaneously combust in a supernova of brand synergy.

“I think that’s what my focus is on, is trying to beat the Monstars, or the Goon Squad, we call them now,” James said. “I didn’t have much success vs. the Suns, so I am gearing my attention to the Goon Squad here in July.”

Is James mixing up the Goon Squad — his opponents in “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” which comes out July 16 — with Jordan’s antagonists in the original “Space Jam” a mind-game to get in the heads of those CGI monsters? Or is this just more proof he’s not focused enough on the game of basketball? Coming up next on Undisputed, we’ll scream at each other about what it all means for three hours.

But in all seriousness, this season obviously took a toll on James physically. He missed the most games of his career with a high ankle sprain that derailed his MVP-caliber campaign, and afterwards, he admitted that the one silver lining of the Lakers’ early elimination is a chance to get his 36 year old body right for the 2021-22 season.

“It’s going to work wonders for me, obviously,” James said of the long rest. “During the season I don’t even talk about rest, I don’t even like to put my mind and frame into that, it makes me weak. But in the offseason, I get an opportunity to rest. We’ve got like three months to recalibrate, get my ankle back to 100% where it was before that Atlanta game, and that’s the most important thing for me.

“Everything else feels extremely well. My ankle was the only thing that was kind of bothering me... in the later stage of the season, and never fully got back to where it was before the injury,” James continued. “But I’m happy I was able to go out there and at least try to help our team win.”

Unfortunately, the Lakers weren’t able to actually win, though not for lack of effort on James’ part. It just wasn’t enough in this shortened season from hell that appeared to be doomed from the start. As a result, James will have plenty of time to rest and promote his upcoming film, and he made sure he got a head start on the latter task during his final postgame interview of the season.

“I’m gonna let the ankle rest for about a month, and then I’m gonna gear up with Lola, Taz, Granny, Bugs and the rest of the crew,” James said. “Hopefully I’ll see you all at the match.”

This looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun.

After a long, long wait, Warner Bros. finally dropped the first trailer for the much-anticipated “Space Jam: A New Legacy” — starring Lakers forward LeBron James — on Saturday, and for anyone that needed a dose of nostalgia for the original with some much flashier new visuals, it is exactly what the doctor ordered:

LeBron flying through Westeros from Game of Thrones? The Iron Giant? Yosemite Sam accidentally murdering Daffy Duck? Don Cheadle? This trailer has it all, and is positively brimming with little easter eggs, just like the movie itself surely will be:

“Space Jam 2” will be better than “Space Jam” confirmed.

The year is 2006: George W. Bush is President of the United States, “Pirates of the Carribean” is all of the craze and a 21-year-old LeBron James is emerging as one of the most dominant forces in the NBA — so dominant that Warner Bros. was prepared to make him the star of the “Space Jam” sequel, James revealed in a recent interview with Derek Lawrence of Entertainment Weekly. So why did it takes 15 years for James to finally commit?

According to James, it was a matter of timing:

Growing up in the Midwest in the ‘90s, it was impossible for James to not aspire to be the next MJ, which made Jordan’s team-up with the Tunes “a big part of my childhood,” he says. He was intrigued when first approached to star in a new Space Jam 15 years ago, but like the great assist man he is, he passed. “I didn’t think I was ready to do anything of that magnitude,” James admits. “I wanted to continue to focus on my game and give it as much as I could.”

While this might be easier to say with the help of hindsight, James made the right call. When “Space Jam” was released in 1996, Jordan was already a four-time NBA champion, a four-time Finals MVP, a five-time league MVP and two-time Olympic gold-medalist. In 2006, James only had one postseason appearance to his name.

Now in 2021, James, at the age of 36, has a resume that rivals Jordan’s, and, like Jordan, James is in the later stages of his playing career, although you really can’t tell by his play. James also has the added benefit of having starred in a few feature-length films, including “Trainwreck” and “Smallfoot.” Why doesn’t anyone ever talk about that in the G.O.A.T. debate?

“Space Jam: A New Legacy” looks set to make Lakers star LeBron James an early 2022 Oscars contender.

“Space Jam: A New Legacy” is slated to release in July on HBO Max, which means we will likely be getting a full trailer for the pseudo-sequel to the 90’s classic soon. But while we’ve already seen what Lakers and soon-to-be movie star LeBron James looks like in the new Tune Squad jersey, on Saturday, a preview for the upcoming Warner Bros. slate gave us our first (albeit brief) look at James in live action alongside Bugs Bunny.

James shared just the clip of himself on his Instagram account, and it seems like he might be excited about the film, but it’s hard to say, really:

Between the look of visible confusion on James’ face — can you say early Oscars buzz, anyone?? — and the abject horror on Bugs Bunny’s, this is an incredibly versatile reaction meme that can be used for tons more situations than the ones above, and I expect we’ll start seeing it in people’s rotations fairly frequently moving forward.

And who knows how good the movie will actually be, but the visual style looks really cool, and if it gives us more memes like this, no one is going to complain (okay, fine, it’s LeBron, so some people will complain regardless, but you know what I mean).

After all, it would be very LeBron to steal the thunder from football on his day off, and hey, he’s done it before.

We will get to watch LeBron James’ debut in the Looney Toons Cinematic Universe from the comfort of our own homes.

Back before the NBA season resumed and the Lakers won the championship, during the early days of the coronavirus pandemic, LeBron James was openly wishing he could bring basketball fans a different type of joy. He was watching how much people enjoyed being able to watch “The Last Dance” at home and having a new basketball movie to watch, and he said he wanted to do the same thing with the sequel/reboot to “Space Jam” he was starring in, which we now know will be called “Space Jam: A New Legacy.”

Unfortunately, the movie wasn’t ready yet.

“During this time right now, I wish we could release it right now, man, and give people some things to watch in their households. But we got until next year, next summer. We’re excited about it,” James said then.

But while James isn’t ultimately going to be able to give us the movie early, Warner Bros. is fulfilling the second part of his wish: You will be able to watch it at home. The company announced in a press release on Thursday that their entire 2021 slate of movies will come simultaneously to theaters and HBO Max.

Today, the Warner Bros. Pictures Group announced that it has committed to releasing its 2021 film slate via a unique, consumer-focused distribution model in which Warner Bros. will continue to exhibit the films theatrically worldwide, while adding an exclusive one month access period on the HBO Max streaming platform in the U.S. concurrent with the film’s domestic release.

...

Warner Bros. Pictures Group’s 2021 expected* release slate currently includes The Little Things, Judas and the Black Messiah, Tom & Jerry, Godzilla vs. Kong, Mortal Kombat, Those Who Wish Me Dead, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, In The Heights, Space Jam: A New Legacy, The Suicide Squad, Reminiscence, Malignant, Dune, The Many Saints of Newark, King Richard, Cry Macho and Matrix 4.

This is great news, even if it’s far away, especially if you — like me and many others — are still (justifiably) apprehensive about returning to movie theaters anytime soon, but also just because having the option to watch a new movie from your couch is always going to be great. Going to theaters is fun during normal times, but sometimes you just want to kick back and relax at home, so no matter how you feel about returning to theaters, it’s cool that subscribers to HBO Max will have this option, and it will be fascinating to see if this changes the way movies are released forever.

There is still no trailer for James’ star vehicle, but we do know (Warning: Possible spoilers at these links link) what the plot will reportedly center on and who is playing the villain, as well as that (unfortunately) both Frank Vogel and Alex Caruso say they will not be in it. There were originally whispers that LeBron would reveal the next step for his career in the movie, but his recent two-year, $85 million extension that will keep him a Laker through 2023 presumably puts those rumors to bed.

“Space Jam: A New Legacy” is currently slated to release on July 16, and now we know that we can watch it from home then, too.

“Space Jam 2” will apparently feature LeBron James in scenes from other iconic Warner Bros. films. Here are the ones we hope he’s in.

The concept of going to see a movie in a theater is one that has become foreign to people across the United States because of how long theaters been closed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. For context, the last movie I went to go see in a theater was “Onward,” which came out in March. It’s been a while.

That doesn’t mean the excitement for the next blockbuster movie releases has gone away, though. In fact, the hype for “Space Jam 2” — which will star Los Angeles Lakers star forward LeBron James — reached an all-time high over the weekend with the release of the synopsis (via screenwriter Ben Mekler):

“During a trip to the Warner Bros. studio, NBA Superstar LeBron James and his son accidentally get trapped within a world that contains all of Warner Bros.’ stories and characters, under the control of a malfunctioning, all-powerful force named Al G (played by Don Cheadle),” it reads. “With the help of Bugs Bunny, LeBron must navigate through a never-before-imagined world filled with iconic movie scenes and characters as they re-assemble the Looney Tunes to rescue his lost son. Now to get back home, LeBron and the Tunes have to unravel Al G’s mysterious plan and win an epic basketball game against digital gamified super-versions of the NBA and WNBA’s biggest stars as the entire world watches.”

This all but confirms the rumors that characters like Pennywise, The Mask and Joker are going to be in the film, which rules so hard. The question now is: what other characters or iconic films will be in “Space Jam 2”?

Unfortunately, we don’t know the answer to that question just yet, but we can make a few suggestions and hope they come true.

Singin’ In the Rain (1952)

LeBron James, a 6’9, 250-pound superhuman, singing and dancing to classic show tunes in the rain? Take my money — literally all of it.

Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971)

“Oompa loompa doompety doo, I’ve got another puzzle for you. Ooma loompa doompety dee, how do you blow a 3-1 lead?”

Superman (1977)

Seeing LeBron James as Superman would be all-time great stuff, but do you know what would be even cooler? Seeing James being rescued by Dwight Howard playing Superman. They did say there would be other NBA and WNBA stars, right?

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001)

LeBron James has dominated on the basketball court, but how would he fare in a quidditch match, and who would he play for? My gut tells me Gryffindor, but people from Slytherin are famous for preserving their bodies, and James is playing at an elite level going into his 18th season.

I’m just saying!

Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)

Here’s my elevator pitch: LeBron as a hobbit.

Inception (2010)

Honestly, there is nothing that appeals to me more than LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Klay Thompson, Kyrie Irving and Damian Lillard in a time heist movie. Irving would obviously be the architect because he thinks with his third eye, or whatever.
