Barring a last-minute development, Andre Iguodala won’t suit up for the Lakers this season.

At long last, the Andre Iguodala trade saga is over, and it’s not ending with him in a Lakers uniform.

According to a report by Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Miami Heat have agreed to a deal with the Memphis Grizzlies that will land them Iguodala, who they are immediately signing to a two-year contract extension:

Of course, that means the Lakers lost the bidding war, but fans can rest easy knowing that it’s not because they didn’t make an offer. In fact, according to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports, Los Angeles put their best foot forward for Iguodala, but it apparently wasn’t enough in the end:

The LA Clippers and Houston Rockets also had also previously expressed interest in the former Finals MVP.

As disappointing a result as this may be for the Lakers, it was always the likely one. From the very beginning, the Grizzlies made it clear that they had no intention of buying out Iguodala, which was the clearest path for the Lakers to land him.

The Lakers could have theoretically packaged Danny Green and Kyle Kuzma to match Iguodala’s expiring $17.1 million salary — Haynes doesn’t make it clear what they actually offered, so it’s possible — but it’s worth questioning if Iguodala, at 36 years old, is worth Green and Kuzma. As crucial as Iguodala was to Golden State’s title runs, he hasn’t played a meaningful game since June. Additionally, Green and Kuzma have been too valuable to the Lakers for them to sacrifice both of them for a player that will likely play less than 25 minutes per game in Iguodala.

Would it have been nice to have a bigger wing defender to back up LeBron James? Absolutely, but not at the expense of the only other wing defender they have. Ultimately, this could be a blessing in disguise for the Lakers.

It doesn’t seem like oft-rumored Lakers target is making a whole lot of progress in extricating himself from the Grizzlies, but he did make it clear he isn’t planning to play anywhere he doesn’t want to play this season.

The situation between Andre Iguodala and the Memphis Grizzlies has been a strange one all season, and it doesn’t appear to be reaching a resolution anytime soon (no matter how much the Los Angeles Lakers would “love” get him).

The Grizzlies have consistently postured through the media as though they have no intention of trading Iguodala, and in recent weeks some have theorized that Memphis might even try to get him to join its roster for a playoff push.

Today, courtesy of David Aldridge of The Athletic, we got confirmation that Iguodala has no interest in such a scenario, and this leak could signal that the veteran is growing a bit impatient in the lead-up to Thursday’s NBA trade deadline:

Iguodala and Memphis mutually agreed he would not report to the Grizzlies while the team tried to find a trade partner. The 36-year-old has yet to play after being traded by Golden State to the Grizzlies last summer.

(2/2)
— David Aldridge (@davidaldridgedc) February 4, 2020

The benefits to Iguodala’s camp leaking this now are fairly obvious. For one, it sends a clear message to Memphis and league observers that he’s not playing for them this season, as well as letting teams he might not want to play for know that they shouldn’t expect him to suit up for them if they do trade for him. It’s not the exact same thing, but we saw with Anthony Davis last year how the latter tactic can really cool the market (and Iguodala isn’t even close to the player Davis is).

There are a couple of other things to unpack from that thread as well. For one, it’s not entirely clear who Iguodala’s list of “agreed-upon teams” is comprised of, although past reports have painted him as choosing between the Lakers and Clippers if bought out. It’s possible his trade list extends to other contenders, but it’s also possible it doesn’t. If that’s the case, there is reason to believe the Lakers may have an advantage in that their lead executive, Rob Pelinka, is Iguodala’s beloved former agent.

Either the Grizzlies will trade him, or he gets a year off before returning to the Golden State Warriors or signing with another contender.

It does seem to be far from a sure thing that another team will trade for Iguodala in this climate — unless it’s the Clippers or another team on his list — so maybe Memphis will cave and decide to save some money and buy Iguodala out. However, as things stand right now he doesn’t seem to be the most realistic option for the Lakers, who would have to waive a player to sign him anyway. There is still a little less than three days to go until the trade deadline, though, so we’ll see how this situation progresses.

Andre Iguodala would be a great get for the Lakers, but it still sounds incredibly unlikely that the Grizzlies will buy him out.

All season, it’s appeared less and less likely that the Memphis Grizzlies will buy out long-rumored Los Angeles Lakers target Andre Iguodala.

That’s not for lack of smoke about such a move. Several players think Iguodala would head to the Lakers if he was bought out. Multiple executives believe the same. Iguodala even live-tweeted the fourth quarter of a Lakers game to bring the speculation to a crescendo, but so far, the Grizzlies have shown no inclination to actually let Iguodala pick his next destination.

For one, the Grizzlies have specifically told the Lakers they won’t buy out Iguodala, and that no matter how much the Lakers would “love” to get him, there is “no world” where they just let him go for nothing. It’s also unlikely that the Lakers can make a trade for Iguodala work, cap-wise.

That’s unfortunate for them, because the Grizzlies’ mindset doesn’t seem to have changed with just weeks to go until the trade deadline, as based on what one member of the Grizzlies front office told Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report, Iguodala hitting the buyout market seems unlikely (h/t Honi Ahmadian of Lakers Outsiders):

“We’re not buying him out,” an executive with the Grizzlies said. “We will trade him, period.”

Now, this could all just be elaborate posturing on the part of the Grizzlies to try and get the Lakers and other teams to offer them more for Iguodala, but given the Lakers’ limitations in the trade department, that’s probably unlikely.

But okay, fine. Let’s just allow the possibility for a second that all of this is BS, and that the Grizzlies will eventually let Iguodala go. Even if they do buy him out, during an appearance on ESPN’s “First Take,” Iguodala didn’t exactly sound like a man who has decided between the two L.A. teams:

It’s possible all of this is just posturing as well — why reveal a preference when you don’t know where you’ll end up? — but when you add it all up, it paints the scenario of Iguodala ending up a Laker as an increasingly unlikely one. We’ll see if that changes, but the Lakers may just have to be happy with what they have for now.

Unlike years past, the Lakers probably won’t be too active leading up to the NBA trade deadline.

Sunday, Dec. 15 marked the unofficial start of the NBA trade season, as it was the first day players signed this summer became eligible to be traded. In recent years, trades have been a regular occurrence throughout the season, but with 40 percent of the league’s players on contracts they signed this past summer, this is the longest the NBA has gone without a trade (152 days) in a non-lockout season since 1968.

Now that most trade restrictions have been lifted league-wide, teams will have more freedom to make moves and get their roster closer to championship contention or, for others, improve their odds at the NBA Draft Lottery. The question is: Where do the Los Angeles Lakers fit into all of this?

The Lakers have gone 24-3 through the first two months of the NBA regular season — tied with the Milwaukee Bucks for the best record in the league. In the Western Conference, they’re 4.5 games above the No. 2 seed, the LA Clippers, in the win column.

But just because the Lakers have been good doesn’t mean they won’t try to get better. The same can be said of the other teams near the top of the standings like the Bucks, Clippers, Miami Heat and Philadelphia 76ers. For the Lakers specifically, though, the trade market isn’t where they’re expected to improve their roster.

The Lakers signed 12 players to new contracts this season, including four players from last year’s roster: Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, JaVale McGee, Alex Caruso and Rajon Rondo. Of those four players, three of them — Caldwell-Pope, McGee and Rondo — have implicit no-trade clauses in their contract because they re-signed on “1+1” deals. For any one of those players, agreeing to a trade would mean losing their Bird Rights when they hit free agency, which, in layman’s terms, limits how much another team can offer said player in the open market. Because of this, players collectively bargained for the ability to reject such deals.

In theory, Caldwell-Pope and his $8 million salary is a good starting point for the Lakers in trade talks, but there’s no reason to believe Caldwell-Pope would voluntarily leave Los Angeles — especially not now. Caldwell-Pope has started the last 16 games for the Lakers, and during that stretch he’s averaged 10.9 points on 51.2% shooting from the field, including 44.3% shooting from behind the arc, and posted a box plus-minus of +3.6. On the season, he’s shooting a career-high 38.6% from 3-point range on 3.1 attempts per game.

With the way Caldwell-Pope is currently playing, he could help a lot of teams that lack talent on the wing, but would he willingly leave an opportunity to compete for a championship and, most of all, the comfortability of a team he’s been with for the last three years for a slightly bigger role on another, less-talented team? Almost certainly not, and you similar cases can be made for Rondo and McGee.

Going with the assumption that Caldwell-Pope, McGee and Rondo won’t agree to a trade, the biggest contract that the Lakers can send out (excluding LeBron James and Anthony Davis) is Danny Green’s two-year, $30 million deal. Green hasn’t quite lived up to the hype offensively to start the season, but he hasn’t been bad enough for the Lakers to consider trading him just 27 games into his contract.

As for the players on smaller contracts on the team — players like Avery Bradley, Alex Caruso and Kyle Kuzma — it would hard to get equal or greater value back for them without including a first-round pick, which the Lakers don’t have many of after trading for Davis in July.

So if the Lakers aren’t going to improve their roster via trade this season, how will they improve it? The buyout market, most likely.

Andre Iguodala might not get bought out by the Memphis Grizzlies after all, but other players will, and when they do, it’s safe to assume the Lakers will be at the top of every free agent’s destination list.

For starters, the Lakers present a prospective free agent as good of an opportunity to win a championship as any other team in the league. But the thing that will set Los Angeles apart from other teams in the post-trade deadline market will be the money they can offer free agents.

The Lakers were granted a $1.75 million disabled player exception in September in light of the new that DeMarcus Cousins would likely miss the entirety of the 2019-20 season with a torn MCL. At the time, it was no more valuable than a veteran’s minimum contract, but that won’t be the case in February.

Unlike veteran’s minimum contracts, the disabled player exception doesn’t prorate throughout the season, so instead of a player signing a veteran’s minimum contract worth less than $500,000 in June, they could sign with the Lakers for $1.75 million. The Denver Nuggets and Houston Rockets will have the opportunity to outbid the Lakers with their mid-level exceptions, but both teams are lower in the standings and, generally speaking, have lower ceilings with the talent they have.

There’s also the possibility that the Lakers do nothing, which would be fine too.

The big concern with the Lakers right now is that they don’t have another big forward to guard the likes of Kawhi Leonard, Paul George or Giannis Antetokounmpo in a seven-game playoff series. But while that may be an issue in the regular season, it shouldn’t be as much of an issue in the postseason, when Green, James and Davis are expected to play heavy minutes.

If a difference-maker becomes available and the Lakers win the bidding war, then that’s great. But if the regular season ends and the roster looks the same as it did on opening night, that shouldn’t be seen as a total failure.

The Lakers could really use Andre Iguodala, but the Grizzlies appear steadfast in their efforts to get something back for him in a trade.

Even given how well the Los Angeles Lakers have started this season, the somewhat scary thought is that they could fairly easily continue to improve. Kyle Kuzma has yet to consistently meet the expectations of even the most realistic fans, Avery Bradley is just now getting ready to return from a somewhat lengthy absence, and they could add to the roster.

As it pertains to that last source of improvement, the name most closely tied to the Lakers has always been Andre Iguodala, who has yet to suit up for the Memphis Grizzlies since being traded there last summer. According to Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer, though, it appears his situation isn’t getting resolved any time soon.

As much as the Lakers would love for Iguodala to get bought out, I’m told there’s no world in which that happens. The Grizzlies will trade Iguodala—it’s only a matter of when and to whom. According to a source, Memphis is open to any type of trade package, including deals that bring back a long-term salary.

So the waiting game continues, with no end in sight until the Feb. 7 trade deadline.

If you’re looking for reasons to be optimistic on this front, it’s somewhat difficult to see a team giving up a first-rounder for an aging Iguodala unless they legitimately feel he’s the difference between them and a title this season. Of the teams who can really convince themselves they’re in the upper echelon of the league in that regard (the Lakers, Clippers, and Bucks), only Milwaukee has the assets to make something like this work, but even then, matching Iguodala’s 17 million-dollar price tag without drastically effecting the rotation is impossible for them.

There are obviously other teams that could make such deals, though. The Denver Nuggets, Utah Jazz, Houston Rockets, and several other Western Conference teams could convince themselves Iguodala is the key to leapfrogging both L.A. teams, but matching Memphis’ demands isn’t going to be easy for any of them.

Some team might also swoop in to trade for Iguodala just to ensure the Lakers don’t sign him after he hits waivers, too. This isn’t out of spite, either, so much as it would be that the Lakers have already looked so strong this season that adding to their roster might further the gap between them and the vast majority of the NBA, something other teams may want to prevent.

It’s hard to predict right now how this is going to play out. Frankly, I think Memphis is being somewhat ridiculous in their trade demands, but that’s how negotiating works. They have to ask for the moon and then work their way down from there. This could even just be posturing before they eventually buy Iguodala out anyway. Who knows, really.

What helps the Lakers in this situation is that they have opened so strongly and don’t have to approach Memphis with any desperation whatsoever. If they get Iguodala, great. They immediately become outright title favorites with the firepower on both sides of the ball to match up with or outright overwhelm any opponent. If they don’t land him, alright, they still have a share of the league’s best record right now and have looked as impressive as anyone could’ve hoped.

It would be great to add Iguodala, but this is by no means the type of situation to panic over, especially given how this season has gone so far. Keep an eye out for rumors about this situation to heat up as we get closer to Dec. 15, which is when talks with teams can really start, as it’s the day players signed this summer become eligible to be traded.

If Andre Iguodala is going to play for the Lakers this season, it will have to be because of a trade.

With 14 wins and just two losses, the Los Angeles Lakers are the best team in the NBA through the first month of the season. However, as good as they’ve looked this season, there are still a few holes in their rotation they need to fill in order to reach their full potential, specifically at the 3 spot.

Their depth at small forward was exposed against the LA Clippers on opening night, when Kentavious Caldwell-Pope was tasked with guarding Kawhi Leonard. Now, with Paul George in the mix for the Clippers, that need is only stronger for the Lakers.

The Lakers are hoping veteran forward Andre Iguodala can be the solution to their problem, but the Memphis Grizzlies would have to buy Andre Iguodala out of his contract first. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, that isn’t happening:

“He’s still a member of the Memphis Grizzlies, and the message that Memphis has been delivering to the entire league, to teams who would love to get him, especially for the postseason. The Clippers, the Lakers, the Houston Rockets, you’re going to have to trade for him. We are not buying him out. He is not going to be on the free agent market. And I think the date of Dec. 15 will be an important day for Andre Iguodala. That is when the summer’s free agents, almost 40% of the players in the league are eligible to be traded. Now you can get more creative with deals. At 35 years old he is fine sitting right now, taking a look at what the marketplace is going to look like, preserving his body, but Iguodala is a player, who Memphis is telling people ‘you’re not going to get him in a contract buyout.’”

That’s been the same message the Grizzlies have been sending since Iguodala’s arrival and it makes sense.

The Grizzlies know that teams like the Lakers, Clippers, Denver Nuggets and Houston Rockets will be in the market for an “Andre Iguodala type player” close to the NBA trade deadline, and it’s highly likely one of them will cave and give the Grizzlies close to the return they’re looking for. Because of how difficult salary-matching would be, the Lakers probably won’t be that team.

Not all hope is lost for the Lakers, though. While Iguodala might not hit the buyout market, others like Evan Turner, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and C.J. Miles could. Additionally, Rob Pelinka could try and swing a trade for a wing play using the contracts of Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Quinn Cook and/or DeMarcus Cousins.

That’s obviously not the reality Lakers fans want, but it’s starting to look like the one they’ll have to come to terms with.

It seems like nearly everyone in the NBA is convinced Andre Iguodala will be bought out and sign with Lakers, except the team that currently employs him.

Andre Iguodala is headed to the Los Angeles Lakers — or at least that’s what most NBA players and executives seem to think.

David Aldridge of The Athletic recently polled league executives to get a feel for where they think the former Finals MVP will end up this season, an a majority of them believe that Iguodala will don the the purple and gold if the Memphis Grizzlies buy him out:

You have $50 to bet. Where does Andre Iguodala end up?

I posed this question to multiple NBA executives Monday and Tuesday morning. Not all of them answered. But of those who did, every single one of them said the Lakers. “Best combination of ring chance and role,” one longtime team boss said. I thought someone would say the Clippers. None did. (Wait; just got one guy who says Clippers, but does so with no particular enthusiasm.) That means nothing, of course; the Clips stayed silent all through the KawhiStakes and wound up getting their man in large part because they kept their mouths shut. Also, there’s always a stealth team out there who sneaks into the mix

.But the notion that Iggy to the Forum Blue and Gold seems to be so universally held a belief could certainly impact how hard other teams engage the Grizzlies in potential trade talks.

This report from Aldridge comes fresh off of a report from Jackie MacMullan of ESPN, who said last month that most players she’s talked to believe Iguodala will sign with the Lakers if he’s bought out. As the saying goes: Where there’s smoke, there’s a 6’6” fire with a 7’3” wingspan — or something like that.

But Lakers fans shouldn’t get too excited because, according to everything that has been put out there to date, the Grizzlies have zero interest in buying out Iguodala out of his $17.1 million deal. If they did, he’d be a free agent already. That’s bad news for the Lakers, who can’t put together a competitive trade package together for the 35-year-old forward because they don’t have the contracts to match his salary or the draft assets to make it worth Memphis’ while.

If Iguodala is bought out because he Memphis can’t find a suitable trade partner and he agrees to give back a large portion of his salary, then great! His chances of ending up the Lakers increase drastically.

Until that happens, it doesn’t matter if the whole world thinks Iguodala is going to sign with the Lakers as a free agent, because he probably won’t be given the opportunity to.

For those keeping track, the Lakers looked great.

The 2019-20 NBA season is nearly two weeks old and Andre Iguodala is still with the Memphis Grizzlies — well, sort of.

The Grizzlies didn’t make the 35-year-old forward report for training camp in September, but he’s still under contract with the team and will be until they find a suitable trade partner for him or buy him out. So far, the latter seems unlikely.

If the Grizzlies did buy Iguodala out, though, the feeling around the league is that he’ll sign with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he has ties with both the front office and the team. Whether or not the interest between Iguodala and the Lakers is mutual, he seemed to enjoy watching them play on Friday.

While the Lakers were making a run against the Dallas Mavericks in the fourth quarter, Iguodala was live-tweeting the game. It’s safe to say there’s no hard feelings between him and James after James blocked his shot in the 2016 NBA Finals.

The Lakers probably wouldn’t have needed an extra quarter to beat the Mavericks if they had another big body to throw on Luka Doncic. If there’s one thing that the Lakers could have used in the two close games they’ve been in, it’s a stout defensive wings who can operate a second creator.

Do you know who fits that bill well? Andre Tyler Iguodala, who won the Finals MVP in 2015 because of those same attributes.

Granted, the Lakers don’t have a vacant roster spot right now, but it’s hard to imagine they wouldn’t create room for Iguodala because of what a tremendous fit he’d be.

Let’s hope that’s a good problem they run into somewhere down the line.
