Now that an NBA champion has been crowned, the offseason is fully in swing for all 30 teams, and boy, are the rumors a-flying. Within the past 24 hours, the Lakers have been linked to free agent point guard Chris Paul, who is 36 years old but coming off the longest playoff run of his storied career. They’ve also had rumored trade interest in Russell Westbrook, who is somewhat heading in the opposite direction after playing the last three seasons with three different teams.
Whatever happens, however, it’s fair to say the Lakers have targeted point guard as their position of need this summer.
On the latest episode of “The 30”, a Silver Screen & Roll podcast, your hosts Jas Kang and Sabreena Merchant attempted to sort through all these rumors. They started by identifying what exactly the Lakers need from their point guard of their future, and then judged how well each of the proposed candidates fit those qualifications. They also went through the cap machinations/trade possibilities that would allow the team to acquire those players.
They then moved on to some point guard options who are not quite at an All-Star level, and ruminate on how those players might help the Lakers get back to the NBA Finals. They also shared some thoughts on the recently-concluded NBA Finals, and if the outcome should impact the way the Lakers may want to build their own team moving forward.
