Few storylines would have a chance at dominating the news cycle while the NBA Finals are taking place, but if any might, it would be a superstar of Damian Lillard’s ilk demanding a trade. Combine that with how poorly the Portland Trail Blazers have handled firing and hiring a coach and, well, let’s just say sleep is probably a hot commodity for those covering that tire fire of an organization.
So, on this week’s episode of “The Anthony Irwin Show,” I welcomed Sean Highkin of Bleacher Report to try to figure out what the hell is going on in Portland.
Because this is a Lakers site and podcast feed, we started with where they fit into this entire situation and, as of right now, there just isn’t any avenue by which Lillard might wind up in purple and gold. Lillard would likely have to request a trade specifically to the Lakers and even then, because he is under contract the next four years, some team out there would likely top the Lakers’ best offer because it won’t be very impressive, relatively speaking.
Also, the Blazers organization would likely fold before they sent Lillard to a franchise they hate as much as they do the Lakers.
From there, Sean and I discussed how in the world Neil Olshey has lasted as long as he has. If a team president can survive dumping on a popular outgoing coach the way he did Terry Stotts, then hire a coach with the legal background of Chauncey Billups, lie about the investigation into said background and all the while frustrate the most popular athlete in franchise history, then he just might have a lifelong contract.
After all that, Sean and I finish with the time he almost made it an entire reporter basketball game without taking a shot.
