The Lakers reportedly made their first roster cut of the preseason on Thursday, waiving Mac McClung from the training camp roster, per Jovan Buha of The Athletic.

McClung’s Exhibit 10 deal means he will remain with the South Bay Lakers in the G League this season. An Exhibit 10 deal offers extra financial incentive for players cut from training camp rosters to remain with that respective team’s G League affiliate, in this case the South Bay Lakers.

One of the fan favorites from Summer League, McClung appeared in three preseason games but totaled just 16 minutes of action, scoring four points in that span. McClung will likely feature a prominent role in the G League this season alongside two-way players Joel Ajayi and newly-signed Sekou Doumbouya as well as other potential training camp cuts in Chaundee Brown and Trevelin Queen, though the latter two are not guaranteed to join the South Bay Lakers this season.

McClung’s waiving could also be a precursor to the Lakers officially announcing the signing of Frank Mason III. After reportedly agreeing to a deal on Sunday, the team never announced the signing, instead announcing Doumbouya’s signing to take the 20th and final spot on the training camp roster. With an open roster spot now available, Mason — who also likely will sign an Exhibit 10 deal — could potentially be announced before being waived and joining the South Bay Lakers.
