Podcast: How will the Lakers defend with LeBron James starting at point guard

LeBron James is always the de facto lead guard, but the Lakers not starting one alongside him might create some issues defensively.

The Los Angeles Lakers roster is just about set, and apparently starting roles are being doled out. Today’s podcasts tackle all the latest about the team and how it ranks among Western Conference competition.

The 30

In this episode, Jas is joined by Sportsnet 650’s Marcus Fitzgerald. To kick things off, the guys discuss the domino effect Kawhi Leonard had on the Lakers filling out their roster, with the latest addition being 3-and-D guard Avery Bradley.

With the Lakers reportedly running LeBron James at the point guard spot, Marcus and Jas share their thoughts on who else should start for the Lakers and how the coaching staff should set its rotations next season. Is Kyle Kuzma better suited to come off the bench as a scorer? Or should the team be running out their best five players right from tip-off.

Following that, the discussion shifts to Lakers head coach Frank Vogel, and how much leeway he will get this season from the front office. With LeBron’s lack of patience and Jason Kidd lurking the background, would Vogel’s job be on the line if the team struggles through the midway point of the season? To wrap things up, Marcus and Jas give their predictions on how the loaded Western Conference will finish in the regular season.

Locked on Lakers

Given all the news that dropped over the weekend, I pushed the mailbag back a day and even despite doing that, there was still plenty of news to update listeners with. So I started the episode there, then opened up the mailbag once we were all caught up.

Listeners seemed really interested in James starting at point guard, so I discussed how I feel about that. Basically, this is fine offensively, but how they defend opposing lead guards is a legitimate concern. We cover that and plenty more.
