Details about where Anthony Davis might want to be traded are starting to come into focus. Thus far, the story has evolved from Davis merely wanting to be traded, to what it would take for the New Orleans Pelicans to trade him to the Los Angeles Lakers, and now a few potential landing spots he would and would not prefer to wind up.
According to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports, the Boston Celtics’ chances of landing Davis took a pretty significant blow.
Regarding team preferences, Boston is not a top target for Davis, sources said. There’s a growing belief of uncertainty that Kyrie Irving will re-sign with Boston, sources said, even though he vowed to do so at the beginning of the season.
While that would ultimately seem to be good news for the Lakers, Haynes also mentioned a team many might not have considered when Davis’ trade demands became public, the New York Knicks.
As Haynes puts it, New York has trade assets like Kristaps Porzingis, Kevin Knox and their own first-round pick this season, which could very easily be the top pick in the draft and thus make a compelling package. It’s worth noting, though, that such a package would be more enticing once everyone knows exactly where that pick winds up, and trading for Davis now would likely add a few wins and lessen that pick’s value.
So, New Orleans can either take up the Lakers on whatever their offer might be right now, gamble on Davis’ opinion on the Celtics changing, or wait to find out what pick the Knicks might have to offer, if they’re willing to offer it at all. If New Orleans chooses to wait this out, that would mean keeping an obviously publicly frustrated superstar in-house for months while he spends his time thinking about his next step. It’s a tough decision all the way around.
Let’s get to that schadenfreude, though.
Oh, it’s glorious. It really is. Somehow, comparing LeBron James (Rich Paul’s close friend and top client) to Donald Trump was a little short-sighted by Danny Ainge. Can’t believe this is going to be said on a Lakers site, but thanks, Danny. Really appreciate that.
So to sum things up for those keeping track at home, the Celtics aren’t a preferred destination for Davis because of concerns about whether Irving will stick around, but also can’t trade Irving for Davis because of concerns Irving wouldn’t stay in New Orleans. Making matters worse for Boston, apparently Brian Windhorst of ESPN is speculating about the Lakers being a potential suitor for Irving this summer. All this after Irving apparently called James randomly to apologize for differences they had as teammates and James just posted this video just randomly out of nowhere.

We’re still quite a ways from any resolution on this Davis saga, but it’s hard not to notice how things some things are just seeming to fall into place.
As always, we’ll continue to update this story as it evolves and, given how quickly this story has progressed already, there’s almost certainly going to be plenty to keep updating you on.
