It’s an exciting time to be a fan of the Los Angeles Lakers. Fresh off the news that the team will sign LeBron James to a four-year contract, it was announced that the team’s classic purple and gold threads will be getting a few modifications this summer.
On Friday, when the free agency moratorium period ended, Nike sent out a push notification through their app revealing that the Lakers’ jerseys will be redesigned for the 2018-19 season. Here’s what the notification read (H/T Reddit user lionrotceh81):
It’s official - Lebron is headed to Los Angeles and the Lakers are set to unveil their jersey redesign soon. Pre-order the King’s new jersey now.

Before we dive in on what to expect from the redesign, it’s worth noting that James has not yet signed his deal with the Lakers. It’s for that reason the NBA had to stop selling James’ jersey after the NBA store had already put them up online for sale. However, you can still pre-order James’ jersey on Nike.com and teamlastore.com.
As the team gets ready to unveil their new jerseys, Nike has no picture of the jersey on the site while the Team L.A. store noted the jerseys are subject to change. But what kind of changes can we expect from the new jerseys?
While no one knows for sure, there’s good reason to believe there will be a modification will to the “Lakers” font in the front of the jersey. As pointed out by Twitter user Rafael Niewiadmoski (@niewiadomski51), the jerseys the team used for their pre-draft workouts had a reimagined version of the iconic Lakers text in the front.
Using that information, Conrad Burry of sportslogos.net made a few mock ups of what the new jerseys could look like and they’re pretty sweet:
With the upcoming redesign of the Lakers Icon Edition uni, here's a go at concept/prediction mockups. The wordmark+number combo is from the recent Nike practice unis that the 2018 draft prospects worked out in (h/t @niewiadomski51 for the observation). Which do prefer? Nike plans to unveil the new jerseys on July 30, according to the team site. July 30 is also the day James will make his first public appearance since deciding to join the Lakers.
