Almost a year after his famous trade request, the Los Angeles Lakers will finally get the chance to have a face-to-face meeting with All-Star free agent Paul George when the free agency moratorium period starts on July 1. Unfortunately, their excitement and preparation for the meeting has put them in a bad spot.
On Monday, Sports Illustrated released a script they obtained titled “Two Dreams,” a script that is expected to be used in a video at George’s meeting with the Lakers.
Here is the full script, via SI.
When you were just a kid
In your room
Dreaming from Palmdale
We were dreaming too.
While you dreamt, we built - built for your arrival
And while we dreamt, you built too
Becoming one of the world’s greatest.
Life’s most powerful dream are the one we realize ourselves.
The ones that turn us into legends.
That kid from Palmdale always knew it
Now the world will, too
While the script doesn’t explicitly say George’s name, it mentions a kid from Palmdale. Unless there are any other big name free agents from Palmdale this summer, it’s safe to assume it’s for George.
Obviously this isn’t how the Lakers envisioned their summer starting off. Any momentum the front office had going into these meeting has seemingly been lost due to the handling of a voiceover script.
Hopefully, George finds the Lakers’ small hiccup charming and is just as flattered when the video is played in the meeting, assuming there is a meeting. George is allowed to meet with the Lakers starting on July 1.
Now, the higher ups will just have to make sure nothing that they have planned for their LeBron James pitch leaks. However, there’s a good chance none of it does, considering James reportedly has no desire in “hearing elaborate pitch meetings” from teams this summer.
We still have a few days to go until free agency starts, but it already looks like it’s going to be an interesting offseason.
