The Los Angeles Lakers have recalled Rajon Rondo and Brandon Ingram from their rehab assignment with the South Bay Lakers in the NBA G League, the team announced on Tuesday.
Rondo and Ingram practiced with South Bay on Tuesday. If all goes well between now and the Lakers’ next practice on Thursday, head coach Luke Walton said on Spectrum SportsNet that Rondo and Ingram will rejoin the team:
“They’re doing good. They had a good practice today. As long as nothing swells up overnight when we get back on Thursday and practice, they’ll be with us going full speed.”
According to Walton, Rondo practiced without limitations on Tuesday. Ingram wasn’t a full participant at practice, but Walton was told that he “looked and felt great.”
Rondo has missed 17 consecutive games for the Lakers dating back to Nov. 17, when he suffered a broken hand. Ingram has missed seven with a sprained ankle. The Lakers are 3-4 with both Ingram and Rondo sidelined.
Upon their return, Ingram and Rondo will provide some semblance of stability for the second unit. In their absence, Walton has experimented with several different bench units and none of them have provided consistent production, particularly on the offensive end.
Ingram and Rondo might not be big time scorers, but they make things happen on offense with their playmaking, rebounding and cutting. Defensively, they have missed Ingram’s length and effort, and Rondo’s vocal leadership.
Suffice to say, the Lakers will look like a much better team when they get two of their key players back — three if you count JaVale McGee, who has missed the last two losses with flu-like symptoms. After another tough loss in Brooklyn, here’s to hoping all three are ready to go on Friday.
