Lakers sign Scott Machado

Scott Machado impressed for the South Bay Lakers last year, and that’s probably where he’ll be again this season.

The Los Angeles Lakers announced that they have signed Scott Machado in press release Friday morning.Machado averaged 15.9 points and 8.7 assists while shooting 40.5 percent from behind the arc for the South Bay Lakers last year, and most recently was playing for Maccabi Haifa during the NBA preseason.

With Machado onboard, the Lakers’ training camp roster stands at 18 players, including their pair of players on two-way contracts (Alex Caruso and Travis Wear). The team can have up to 20 players during training camp, but must trim their roster to at least 15 standard players and two two-way players by the regular season.

The Lakers do need depth at point guard, but as good as Machado was in the G League last year, he probably isn’t their answer there. Instead, Machado’s deal is likely an Exhibit 10 contract, which would allow the team to pay him a bonus of up to $50,000 if he is cut by the Lakers, signs with the South Bay Lakers and stays with them in the G League for 60 days this season.

Machado could at least in theory surprise and make the roster (maybe the Lakers really like him!) but given that he hasn’t been in training camp until now and that the team’s last preseason game is tonight, this is probably just a procedural move made in order to help stock the team’s G League talent pool. Maybe if Machado impresses there again he could move up, but for now expect to see him in South Bay until we hear convincing reasoning otherwise.
