The Los Angeles Lakers are the 2017 NBA Summer League champions, beating the Portland Trail Blazers 110-98 in a tightly contested finals. The Lakers were without summer league most valuable player Lonzo Ball, but Kyle Kuzma played like the finals MVP.

Kuzma was unbelievable in the last game of summer league, continuing to shred the net from beyond the arc and around the rim. Defensively he did everything for the Lakers, fighting bigs in the post, switching onto guards and hustling every possession.

Kyle’s big moment was a buzzer-beating three-pointer to close the third quarter that sent the crowd into a frenzy. He finished with 30 points while adding another six mad three to his impressive shooting in Las Vegas.

Matt Thomas continued his hot shooting streak, adding in 23 points while connecting on all five of his attempts from downtown. Vander Blue tacked on 20 points, playing a big role for the team sans Ball. A summer league title on his birthday, while having a good game, is a pretty good gift for Blue. Alex Caruso had a solid night moving the ball in place of Lonzo, dishing out nine assists.

The young Lakers team prevailed in Las Vegas even with injuries to key players from Day 1. The prize for their effort? A summer league title and plenty of momentum heading into the offseason.
