Los Angeles Lakers rookie Lonzo Ball has been the subject of more attention in his first Las Vegas Summer League than possibly any Laker ever. The Lakers have had highly touted rookies in Las Vegas before, but Ball is a legitimate phenomenon who’s had a crush of media descend upon each of his postgame availabilities before clearing out once he’s done speaking.
The attention has extended to everything around Ball, including his choice in footwear. Ball made headlines earlier this year when his father LaVar began marketing his signature shoe, $495 ZO2s. Ball wore those shoes for his first two games of summer league before sitting out one game with a groin injury.
When he returned, Ball was wearing a pair of Kobes, a decision he chalked up to “mamba mentality.” The next night he was back out on the floor in another shoe besides his own, James Harden’s signature sneaker.
Because he’s Lonzo Ball and how much attention his own shoes received upon launch, there has been a legitimate effort by the media to keep track of which shoes Ball is wearing, which apparently has extended to ESPN graphics keeping track of how many points he’s scored in each brand:
This is clearly a meaningful and not-at-all-Numbers don’t lie. Ball had two games to score points in his signature shoe, and only managed 16. It’s clear that in this case, Kobe’s are better, and Ball should keep his “mamba mentality.”
Either that, or he had to adjust to playing with new teammates against NBA-ish competition. One of the two.
