A day after Markelle Fultz talked up his fit next to D'Angelo Russell following his first workout for the Los Angeles Lakers, there are reports that president of basketball operations Magic Johnson wants to make such a pairing a reality.
According to Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress, Johnsoin "'is in love' with Fultz" and might attempt to trade for the Boston Celtics No. 1 pick in the 2017 NBA Draft in order to select him. Givony reports that Johnson might try to do this with an offer of Julius Randle and the Lakers' own No. 2 pick.
Fultz has widely been considered the best prospect in the draft for some time now, but Givony reports that the team's thought process changed because Fultz "murdered" his workout and that it might have been "the best one" the team saw throughout the pre-draft process.
Givony said that Fultz even played two-on-two baseketball despite it not being agreed to beforehand and that his vertical was measured at 40 inches.
This is certainly an interesting wrench thrown into an insane pre-draft process that just yesterday featured rumors that the Lakers might trade down or that the Celtics might not even take Fultz. All thats clear is that no one knows what's going to happen, and that the ride to the draft on June 22 is going to be anything but smooth.
Here is an updating list of every player the Lakers have worked out or met with. Harrison Faigen is co-host of the Locked on Lakers podcast (subscribe here or listen to us talk about Fultz below), and you can follow him on Twitter at @hmfaigen.
