NBA Draft Rumors: Lakers to work out Johnathan Motley on June 9

The front office continues to mine for prospects who might have slipped through the cracks.

The Los Angeles Lakers were originally scheduled to work out UCLA’s Lonzo Ball on June 9, but he rapidly changed plans to June 7 for his solo workout.

The Lakers will still work out at least one player that day, however, as Mark Medina of the Orange County Register reports that Baylor forward Johnathan Motley “plans to be part of the Lakers’ pre-draft workout on June 9.”

Motley is the 39th-ranked player on Draft Express’ top-100 2017 NBA Draft prospect list following a junior season that saw him average 17.2 points and 9.9 rebounds. While that’s significantly below the Lakers’ second and 28th overall selections in the draft, the team could be examining Motley in case he falls out of the draft entirely or for if they decide to buy a second-round pick.

Or maybe (conspiracy theory time), just maybe the Lakers really like Motley. Maybe they actually rescheduled Ball so they could make sure they got Motley in on June 9 because maybe it was the only day he could make it.

Maybe they want to take Motley second overall instead of Ball and maybe he’ll lead the Lakers to eight consecutive titles before retiring due to boredom with the lack of competition.

Or maybe the offseason has just made us bloggers lose our minds. Maybe it’s just that.

Here is an updating list of every player the Lakers have worked out or met with. Harrison Faigen is co-host of the Locked on Lakers podcast (subscribe here), and you can follow him on Twitter at @hmfaigen.
