Over the course of a few hours, it now appears we may have the full details on the bizarre situation the Los Angeles Lakers are embroiled in.
After Jim and Johnny Buss reportedly attempted to remove Jeanie Buss as Lakers president and controlling owner, a process which was halted by a restraining order, the attorney for the two brothers told Nathan Fenmo of the Los Angeles Times that “they signed document late Thursday reelecting Jeanie Buss as controlling owner of Lakers.”
They reportedly did so after Jeanie told the brothers she would be seeking a restraining order.
The revelation is the latest twist in a saga that began in February, when Jeanie Buss brought Magic Johnson back to the franchise he starred for as an advisor. After a publicity tour on which Johnson essentially stated outright that he wanted Jim Buss’ job, he took it. The Lakers fired Jim Buss and longtime general manager Mitch Kupchak a few weeks later.
It appears this was the first attempt by Jim to take back a seat at the table of a franchise he’s still part owner of. Jeanie’s restraining order and Jim signing these documents may quiet things for now, but this fight likely isn’t going totally away anytime soon.
