The cold war for control of the Los Angeles Lakers has ceased.
Lakers part-owners Jim and Johnny Buss “signed a consent agreement on Monday that waives the team’s annual shareholders meeting and elects Jeanie Buss to the Lakers board of directors,” according to Mark Medina and Larry Altman of the Orange County Register. As they note, this means that Jeanie Buss will remain in full control of the Lakers.
The agreement comes a few weeks after Jim and Johnny Buss attempted to seize power within the Lakers, a move Jeanie Buss thwarted fairly easily.
While the Lakers’ ownership situation would seem to be a little clearer with this announcement, Jeanie Buss’ lawyer has previously warned fans to be prepared for a lengthy fight over the fate of the team. The two sides will go to court on May 15, and the Lakers future won’t be certain until this ownership drama is figured out.
