Lakers News: Magic Johnson has started working with D’Angelo Russell

Can a pregame pep talk be the start of a fruitful partnership?

In his initial appearance on Spectrum Sportsnet to discuss what his role with the Los Angeles Lakers would entail, Magic Johnson mentioned that he hoped to work with the team’s young players, singling out D’Angelo Russell specifically.

That process began on Friday before the Lakers took on the Boston Celtics, with Johnson tweeting he “had a good conversation” with Russell.

“I look forward to working with him!” Johnson wrote.

As arguably the best point guard in NBA history, Johnson working with the team’s current floor general should be an exciting prospect for Lakers fans to say the least.

Russell has matched career-highs with 10 assists in each of the Lakers’ last two games, and while he’s showing progress, he still has a lot of work to do to reach his full potential.

Maybe Johnson can help him get there, and maybe he can’t, but letting him pick the brain of one of the greatest players to ever play certainly can’t hurt his development.
