The Los Angeles Lakers aren’t scheduled to kick off the NBA season until October 26th, but they won’t have to wait that long for their first showdown with the Golden State Warriors. The Lakers’ first match-up with the first team to ever blow a 3-1 lead in the NBA Finals will take place in a preseason game on October 15th, and Brandon Ingram probably has that date marked on his calendar.
The Lakers’ second overall pick has been compared to Durant non-stop throughout his short career, and he’s not shying away from the pressure to come with such praise. Ingram told Larry Berger of USA Today that he “idolized” Durant growing up and can’t wait to get a chance to play against him. (H/T Ryan Ward of Lakers Nation):
“I like Kevin Durant,” said Ingram. “I’ve always idolized his game. Just the way he moves, his body size, body type. The way he plays the game, the way he carries himself. I think I’m going to be very excited when I match-up with him.”
This isn’t the first time Ingram has expressed a desire to play against the player he’s been most often compared to. During Team USA minicamp Ingram called the experience of guarding the newest Warrior “a dream come true” and acknowledged it was an honor to receive such lofty praise, especially coming from the the man himself.
Ingram obviously isn’t Durant yet, but his competitive desire to play against one of the best players the NBA has to offer at his position is a promising sign for his future.
