There is still about a month left in the offseason, but the Los Angeles Lakers have been busy the last few days.
After reportedly agreeing to a deal with Zach Auguste, the team announced on Monday that they have signed another big man in Yi Jianlian. According to The Vertical’s Shams Charania, another signing will be completed on Tuesday when the Lakers have No. 2 overall pick Brandon Ingram officially put pen to paper on his rookie contract.
The signing will come exactly two months after Los Angeles selected the 18-year-old out of Duke, which led many to wonder what was taking so long. But since the Lakers had an abundance of salary cap space this summer, they could hold off on signing it to preserve as much of it as possible while they pursued free agents and/or trade opportunities.
Of course, the Lakers probably could have signed Ingram sooner and it may not have changed anything in the end, but there was certainly reasoning for waiting to get it done. Anyone that was worried about a possible trade because Ingram had not signed yet can breathe easy, at least for now. On Tuesday, Ingram will officially become a Laker, hopefully for many years to come.
