Lakers offseason news: Jordan Clarkson says he's 'excited' to play for Luke Walton

He's talked with Los Angeles' new coach about his system, and he's happy about what he heard.

A lot of people are excited about the Los Angeles Lakers hiring Luke Walton as the 26th head coach in franchise history. Jordan Clarkson made it clear in a radio interview on Power 106 in Los Angeles that his name can be added to that list. (h/t Eric Yee of Lake Show Life)

"I was really excited when I heard that he got hired," said Clarkson, who noted that Walton called him right after he was hired to talk about how he'd fit into the new coach's Golden State Warriors' inspired offense. The guard will be a restricted free agent this summer, but Clarkson but in the likely event he returns, he thinks Walton's system is a good fit for the team.

"I think it's dope," Clarkson said of Walton's system. "I think it fits us really well. We've got a lot of guys that can do a lot of things. Julius [Randle], D'Angelo [Russell], Larry Nance [Jr.], including myself. So I think it's something we should definitely be excited for... We're waiting for them to be done with so he can come and start working with us."

It's no surprise Clarkson is excited for Walton's tenure. Provided the Lakers retain the third-year guard as they are widely expected to, he and Russell can serve as dual handlers in a fast paced offense heavy on pick and rolls, with possessions sprinkled in for whoever the Lakers select second overall and Julius Randle with plenty of movement off the ball as well.

Unlike the season after the Lakers' infamous "Now This is Going to be Fun" Sports Illustrated cover, this season sounds like it actually will be fun, giving Clarkson and Lakers fans good reason to be excited.

The whole interview is worth a watch, as Clarkson discussed several interesting topics, including:

  • His upcoming basketball camp, where he'll work with kids himself instead of just loaning his name to the camp.
  • Kobe Bryant's last season (he jokingly suggested the Lakers should keep a cardboard cutout of Kobe around the locker room so the team misses him less)
  • His favorite shoes (he doesn't like to wear Jordans off the court)
  • Social media (he's not a fan of people telling him to get in the gym)
  • His love of the Philippines ("They just show so much love to the sport, and I just do my best to make them proud.").
