In a battle of two teams decimated by injuries, the Los Angeles Lakers came up short in their road trip finale, losing 103-100 to the Memphis Grizzlies. The Lakers finish their four-game road trip at 1-3, dropping their overall record to 10-12 as they head back to Los Angeles.
Lou Williams had it going early and often off the bench, scoring 28 points in the first half before finishing the night with 40 on 11-of-20 shooting. Only two of his teammates were able to score in double figures, however, as Luol Deng and Timofey Mozgov scored 18 and 13 points, respectively.
A depleted Memphis team also benefitted from a scoring explosion off the bench, thanks to 31 points from Troy Daniels on 12-of-23 shooting, including 6-of-12 from three. Veteran Marc Gasol played well down the stretch, finishing with 19 points and eight assists while JaMychal Green tallied the only double-double of the night with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
The game was there for the taking for the Lakers, but a number of key missed shots after poor offensive execution doomed them in the end. Perhaps it was due to the team being a bit worn out, playing their fourth game on the road in five nights, but the Lakers let a very winnable game slip away late.
Next up for Los Angeles is their second meeting with the Utah Jazz on Monday night. The Lakers will look to avenge a 96-89 loss at the hands of the Jazz back on the second game of the season, as this brutal 12-game stretch in their schedule nears its conclusion.
