Phil Jackson and Jeanie Buss announce the end of their engagement via Twitter

The engagement between Phil Jackson and Jeanie Buss is off. Jackson made the stunning announcement to the world on Twitter, saying in a conjoined statement that the two made the decision “with mutual love and respect.”

Maintaining their long distance and business-heavy relationship seems to have taken a toll on the two NBA executives. Jackson proposed to Buss around Christmas back in 2012, but the two hadn’t made it official via marriage yet.

This is a huge decision for both parties and may even have implications on the basketball operations side of things for the Lakers. It seems even less likely that a return by Jackson is in the future with one of the driving forces in his potential involvement in Jeanie falling out. An already sloppy situation would be a bit more complicated, should that conversation ever arise.

Ultimately it’s surely a sad time for both families, though both Phil and Jeanie have their hands full with two of the largest sports franchises in the world to deal with on a day-to-day basis.
