Taking a quick look at this standings, this is one of the most important Laker games of the year, but for the future, not the present. At this point, the Lakers need to focus on developing young players (see: Jordan Clarkson went for 30 last night) and getting the best draft pick they can come June.
Realistically, the Lakers are unlikely to secure the best overall chance at the #1 draft pick and no one is catching the 14-57 Knicks in the loss column. But the number 2 position is very much in play – they currently have one more win than the on-fire 76ers (4-6 in their last 10) and sit only 1.5 games ahead of the Timberwolves. This is an important opportunity for them to close the gap and solidify a top 5 position in the draft.
On the court, there are also some reasons to watch. While they are bad now, the Timberwolves are stocked full of young talent, including the Rookie of the Year favorite Andrew Wiggins. Zach LaVine, a UCLA product and recent slam dunk champ, will be able to showcase his electrifying athleticism in transition against a suspect LA defense. Perhaps most importantly, Clarkson will be able to test his developing point guard skills against Ricky Rubio, who should challenge him on both ends of the court.
Enjoy the game as a chance to get a sneak peak at some young talent that will likely be an up and comer in the West over the next few years.
