Pau Gasol is preparing to leave the Los Angeles Lakers and is working toward finalizing an agreement to sign with the Chicago Bulls, reports Yahoo Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski. Gasol declined two different offers from the Lakers and will head to the Eastern Conference on a team that will likely push to contend in a wide-open field.
Gasol met with several teams leading up to his decision. The Miami Heat, New York Knicks, San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder were all interested in signing the skilled big man, but the Bulls will have the opportunity to add him to their roster.
This marks the end of Gasol's seven-season stay with Los Angeles. He averaged 17.7 points, 9.9 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game through his career with the Lakers, and was the turning point for the franchise reaching three straight NBA Finals.
It's unclear what the terms will be on Gasol's new deal. The Bulls do not have the salary cap space necessary to offer Gasol a significant contract, but could be working toward completing a sign-and-trade with the Lakers once the sides agree to a contract figure.
