The Los Angeles Lakers have invited big man Shawne Williams to training camp, reports Ian Begley of ESPN.Williams played with the New York Knicks during the 2010-2011 season under head coach Mike D'Antoni, who is believed to be a "big fan" of his game.
Williams did not play during the 2012-2013 NBA season. He last payed for the New Jersey Nets during the 2011-2012 season. He appeared in 25 games, averaging 4.5 points and 2.7 rebounds per game.
In his one year with the Knicks under D'Antoni, he averaged a career-high 7.1 points per game and shot 40 percent from beyond the arc.
Williams has had multiple run-ins with police since being drafted out of the University of Memphis. He has been arrested on drug-related charges on three separate occasions. His most recent run-in with law enforcement was on December 13, 2012.
The Lakers are still participating in Las Vegas Summer League. They have advanced in the playoffs and next play Saturday against the undefeated Golden State Warriors. There have been no reports indicating which, if any, players will be invited to Lakers training camp.
