Lakers free agency: Jodie Meeks team option picked up

Jodie Meeks will return for a second season with the Lakers as the team has picked up his team option.

The Los Angeles Lakers have exercised their team option on shooting guard Jodie Meeks, the team announced in an official press release. Meeks will return for the 2013-2014 season and was slated to make $1.5 million. The announcement states that the team has not released the terms of the agreement, however.

Perhaps the most important factor in Meeks' season was that he was healthy through the majority of it, appearing in 78 games, and was a constant piece in the Lakers' rotation backcourt rotation. While he under-performed from beyond the arc shooting only 35 percent -- his presumed area of specialization-- the front office has decided to give Meeks another round.

With Kobe Bryant's Achilles injury and uncertain return timetable the Lakers may lean heavily on Meeks as a familiar player in Mike D'Antoni's offense. With their limited tools in free agency, and Meeks' contract likely under $2 million, it's a value signing for Los Angeles at a position they may need extra depth at.
