The free agency rumor silly season is upon us. The floodgates of recruitment meetings, elaborate dinner pitches, and Adam Levine posing in various Los Angeles Lakers jerseys doesn't officially begin until midnight Eastern time on July 1st. However, that hasn't stopped reports of various players the Lakers are interested in flying back and forth with the frequency of high school cafeteria gossip.
The latest player Los Angeles is said to be interested in? Derrick Williams of the New York Knicks. According to Marc Berman of the New York Post, "[Knicks president Phil] Jackson wants to re-sign Lance Thomas, Kevin Seraphin and Williams." However, the Zen Master will have some competition for that last player's services, according to Berman, because "Williams will be recruited by at least the Lakers and Suns, according to a source."
How hard exactly the Lakers will be "recruiting" Williams is open to interpretation, and the fit would certainly be weird. Williams is at his best as a small ball four, and the Lakers already have two long-term pieces at power forward in Julius Randle and Larry Nance, Jr.
The Lakers might be interested in Williams if other plans fall through, but it's basically impossible to believe the former second overall pick is very high on their priority list.
