The optimism espoused by fans of the Los Angeles Lakers heading into the 2016 NBA Draft hasn't been seen since, well, last year's draft. Los Angeles also had the second overall pick in 2015, and it seemed far less certain who the front office would select than it does this year, with the team nearly assured to take Duke forward Brandon Ingram.
Russell's selection over Jahlil Okafor was a surprise to many, and he and the player picked ahead of him, Minnesota Timberwolves forward/center Karl-Anthony Towns, reminisced about their big night and additionally tried to predict which players would go first and second overall this year in videos for Draft Kings.
Russell did not exactly go out on a limb with his choice, and predicted the obvious scenario.
"I feel like on and two, either way, if Ben [Simmons] goes one, Ingram goes two. Ingram goes one, Ben goes two," said Russell. "I just feel like it's all about situation."
Russell additionally expressed excitement for whichever player ends up as his new teammate.
"We got the second pick, so most likely we'll take advantage of it," said Russell. "I'm just looking forward to it."
