The Lakers are unable to make a trade of their 1st round pick because of the rule that you can't trade a first rounder 2 consecutive years...let's fix that. A trade with Phoenix of our 7th overall for their 14 & 18 AND our 2015 pick back too!
Why would we want do it? We are definitely more than 1 or 2 players away from fielding a competitive team, so a draft choice and a free agent signing aren't going to get us there.
As in all trade scenarios, the question with as much importance is or course, why would the trade partner want to do it?
Phoenix is IMO 1 or 2 players away from being in serious contention in the West, so a higher draft choice might work well for them, and it's hard for me to imagine they can effectively incorporate into their team the 3 1st round picks they have in the upcoming draft.
Good for the Lakers and good for the Suns... it's a win - win.
After accomplishing that, let's explore the idea of taking on Carlos Boozer's contract since we have the cap space, and Chicago is IMO one free agent signing away from serious contention. They could go out and get Carmello for their squad, and all we would want in order to help them out is their 2 1st round picks (16 and 19).
Lakers end up with 14, 16, 18, 19 and Boozer for a year...then Nash and Boozer expire when the projected "big free agency" year of 2015 occurs. Oh yeah...we get our 1st round pick for 2015 back too :)
