The first day of All-Star weekend is upon us, and with it, the first surfacing of a Dwight Howard trade. On the same day that it surfaced that Mitch Kupchak informed Dwight Howard he would not be traded, Ken Berger of CBS has learned that the Lakers and Celtics have had preliminary discussions around a Rajon Rondo / Dwight Howard swap.
The Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics have had preliminary discussions regarding a trade involving a Dwight Howard and Rajon Rondo swap, reports Ken Berger of CBS.
CBSSports.com has learned that the Lakers have engaged in preliminary trade discussions with an unlikely trade partner regarding Howard: their fierce rival, the Boston Celtics. The centerpieces of the possible deal, which hasn't gained any traction, would be Howard and Rajon Rondo.- Ken Berger, CBS Sports
Earlier in the day it was reported that Mitch Kupchak had informed Dwight Howard the Lakers would NOT be trading the "75%" center. It appears that isn't the case after all, though there are scarce details in regards to the deal. Howard, a free agent this Summer, could also be dealt in a sign and trade.
The Celtics could only acquire Howard in a sign-and-trade if they eschewed their full mid-level and remained below the so-called luxury-tax apron, a threshold $4 million above the tax line that was added in the 2011 collective bargaining agreement.- Ken Berger, CBS Sports
It's important to detail that these talks are early, and there's nothing indicating they will progress beyond being more than just talk between two teams, but the implications are significant. We will keep you updated on any progress regarding Dwight Howard, and there may be many considering the mass of media and front office personnel gathered for All-Star weekend. Buckle up, everybody, the trade deadline is nearing and it's decision time.
In the meantime, there aren't any games going on right now... so... would you do it?
