This trade is a very simple swap of Power Forwards. Z-Bo will have one year remaining next year at $16.9mil whereas Pau will be expiring this season.
Why LAL does this?
Getting Z-Bo as a 1yr rental will allow the Lakers to compete next year, and then when his contract comes off the books in 2015, it will allow the Lakers to go after FAs like Love, Aldridge, Hibbert, BLopez, or Rondo.
Why MEM does this?
Pau's return to MEM and his pairing with Marc can be something the small market Grizzlies can sell to their fans. it doesn't hurt that Pau and Marc can play together. Because Pau is expiring, it will give them cap space this offseason in which they could use to resign Pau at a lesser rate than Z-Bo's $16.9mil or go after money-ball type FAs with Hollinger there.
What about 2014-15?
-I think Jordan Hill should be resigned, maybe a 3yr deal at $4-5mil per.
-If the Lakers don't want to throw a $12-14mil (max) at Bledsoe (RFA), there will be cheaper options like:
