USA-Spain Open Thread

Stay connected for news and updates

It's time to bring home the gold! Today at 7:00 a.m. California time, the Olympic men's tournament reaches its thrilling (?) conclusion with the long-awaited gold-medal game between Team USA and Spain. Back in 2008 these teams played a contest that was, in fact, quite thrilling. Spain trailed by four with 2:25 to play in that one before the Americans pulled away to win by 11. Since then the assumption has been that the teams would rematch in 2012, and here we are.

Though Spain is the last non-American side still standing, they've been far from dominant in this tournament. In group play they lost twice, to Russia and Brazil, and almost lost to lowly Great Britain as well. Both of their wins in the knockout round have been by single digits. Team USA is a massive favorite to win today, but if any opponent has a shot at knocking them off it's the Spaniards.
