Fixing the All-Star Game (or a post I wrote to lighten the depression around here)

I wrote this because I'm bored of the fluffy articles about Lebron joining the Kobe system, depressing articles about the fall of Rome, and dumb articles in general. So since the All-Star game is around the corner...here's some ideas for reinventing the game:

Star-divide

People always complain that the stars don't seem to give a crap. They just don't care. The "game" is a bunch of dunks, steals, and turnovers. Kobe always heats up at some point in order to win the MVP somehow. But no one cares. But let's throw out some proposals and see what happens:

1. Pay out half a million to every player on a winning All-star squad. Pay out another .25 million to a starter on the squad. And add another .25 million for the MVP of the game. If you guys don't think these amounts are motivating enough, up the ante. Make it lucrative to win the game. If the game is competitive, the NBA will recoup the money and more anyway.

2. Get rid of the East-West format. Bill Simmons proposed this a while ago. Instead, have the coaches pick two captains. The captains pick their teams like a pickup game of bball. Imagine the possibilities. The intrigue. Make the draft a fan event on day 1 of the weekend. Imagine Kobe and Lebron as captains and picking their squads.

We know Lebron will pick Wade. Kobe will pick Paul. Lebron picks Dwight. Kobe picks Gasol. Lebron picks Bosh. Kobe picks Durant. And since he has been picking second, gets a second pick: Dirk. Lebron picks Rose.

Imagine the possibilties. How about we combine idea 1 and 2?

3. Have the starters play a game of HORSE. I'm just throwing this out there. Would be cool. The winners get to be captains or something.

4. Keep the East-West format - but the conference that wins gets home-court advantage in the Finals. This would be cool. Anyone on a contender will be motivated.

5. Screw the whole game and have a massive 1-1 tournament. Don't tell me this would be INSANELY popular. Imagine the turnout for the Lebron v. Kobe matchup, the Dirk vs. Dwight matchup, etc.

But Kobe said he'd like to play with LeBron. What if he wanted to pick him for his team?

That would be fine if Lebron wasn't picked as a captain

or deferred responsibility…like he always does.

Would love to see a 1-1 tournament

Don’t really understand they haven’t tried to implement that before

It's a fun game as it is I think...

not much D, a lot of scoring until the end sometimes where the play tightens up. The only thing I would get rid of or at least not do every year with all star weekend is the dunk contest. Now, the Pro Bowl should be axe’d in favor of a skills comp. Off topic I know but the pro bowl is awful.

At least the All Star game isn't in Hawaii

like the Pro Bowl. Then they really wouldn’t care.

There's not really an adequate venue for it here anyway.

I think it's fine the way it is...

Offense is more popular than defense. The current All-star game features a whole lotta offense and little defense. Lots of alley-oops, crazy passes, fast-breaks, and just a bunch of plays you don’t see in normal games, and that’s what the ASG should be about, IMO.

Trying to make it more competitive by giving money to the winning team, or whatever, takes away that unique vibe. In a way, it presents an opportunity for the players to have fun one last time before final 1/3 of the regular season starts, during which teams are fighting tooth and nail for playoff positioning.

current all-star game format ain't broke, so it needs no fixing

but i’ve always loved the idea of a one-on-one tournament

The Bernel Zone

"I’ve always been comfortable as a kid growing up to think that when my career is over, I want them to think of me as an overachiever despite the talent that I have. To think of me as a person that’s overachieved, that would mean a lot to me. That means I put a lot of work in and squeezed every ounce of juice out of this orange that I could. Hopefully, they perceive me as person who did whatever he had to do to win above all else. Above anything. Above stats. If they say that about me I’ll be happy." - KOBE BRYANT

Like 1 on 1 tourney idea to replace dunk contest

In my opinion, they'll never get rid of the dunk contest

It’s got a storied history, there have been plenty of memorable moments, it produces money for them (see last year with Sprite and Kia).

But I’d gladly see them replace the skills contest and the 3-point shooting contest with a 1-1 tourney. Throw in the celebrity game too which is really dumb.

One on one competition could be fun...

Maybe just pit oppossing all star starters at their respective positions to a game to 15, 2 pts for 3’s. Paul vs Rose, Bynum vs DH, ect…

Don't want this at all.
4. Keep the East-West format – but the conference that wins gets home-court advantage in the Finals. This would be cool. Anyone on a contender will be motivated.

What’s the point of the regular season record if the best team in the regular season or the team with the better record in the Finals won’t get the home-court advantage just because their conference lost in the All-star game? I hate that rule in the MLB and I’ll hate it even more if that happen in the NBA.

This ^^

The upside (ASG becomes a bit more competitive) does NOT justify the downside (best teams might not get HCA in finals).

Heck, that’s not even an upside, to be honest. ASG would lose its flair and fun-loving atmosphere. Lose-lose situation.

hmmm.

I don’t pay much attention to the ASG anymore because its so sloppy and meaningless. this would be a welcome change for me. and you see all the best players playing their best at the same time, that is a sight to behold.

Even so, HCA advantage in the FINALS shouldn't be determined by what is essentially an exhibition game in mid-february in which most of the players won't even make the finals.

Majority of the fans thinks that its stupid.

When a wild card team who made it all the way to the World Series, gets HCA against a team who won their division and had a better record doesn’t seem fair to me. Just this last season the Cardinals who was a wild card had HCA against the Rangers because the NL won in the MLB All-Star game. The Rangers had the 2nd best record in the MLB while the Cardinals only made the playoffs on the last day of the regular season.

make it like the mlb all-star game

have it count for homecourt in the finals, then give the MVP a corvette they’ll never use.

Making it for Finals homecourt advantage would make it enjoyably competitive.

Even if the concept is rather unfair. Every guy from a top five team in either conference would be gunning for that win pretty damn hard.
