Around SBN: NFL Players Ready To Welcome Gay Teammate

"I guess my point here is this: If you're the Lakers, why not sign Gilbert Arenas? They worked him out a few days ago, to a chorus of bloggers (correctly) pointing out that he's hopelessly past his prime and not an obvious fit for the team. And I have no idea whether the super-secret European blood-spinning procedure he recently underwent has put the zest back in his knees, or if he's any different from the guy who coughed up that disastrous season for the Magic last year, and I'd say that the odds he'd actually help the Lakers are probably around 20 percent. But you know what? The current 'dignified wilting ex-champions' act of sitting still and making vague overtures toward Dwight Howard isn't going to help, either. Why not at least roll the dice and write your name on the season in letters big enough to see?"

Arenas

Isn’t a PG though. So while yes he could add (possibly) some extra scoring punch, he won’t fix the maladies that are effecting this offense. You know, the ones that a starting PG with good court vision could do. I’d be fine with Arenas in more of a Jason Terry mold, where he comes off the bench and plays off the ball and just scores buckets. I don’t think I’m okay with him running the offense though.

You always root for laundry. Of course, you'd like to have good players in that laundry as well.

Doesn't matter

All we need him to really do is to play good defense on opposing PGs and naturally we will be cutting down like 6 points from opponent’s teams. Anything else is a bonus.

I found a very insightful piece which IMO is a realistic take on what the Lakers are/aren't doing...and why.

If Kobe is willing to resign for a min when his contract expires to help the Lakers win.

We can possible have 4 All Star Caliber players on our team, and if we can pick up an all star caliber rookie…. and fill the rest with scrubs…

Sounds like 2002-2003 Lakers?

The possibility of Kobe signing for the minimum at any point in the rest of his career is zero.

Agree. But he can't justify anywhere near 30 million after 2014.

He doesn't have to. The FO will make him an offer and he'll accept it or not.

They won’t be offering that much.

No doubt.

But at the same time, he’s probably not going to decline to such a degree that he wouldn’t deserve a moderately sized contract. Unless we signed a number of max free agents (since a certain LeBron James is a free agent then) and didn’t have space for him, he’ll still get $8-10 million.

Depends on how much he wants to win

and what it takes to win. If he wants 2 more rings, he may just do that.

I'm all for signing Arenas at this point (a risk, but let's take it)

Although I thought he looked good in the work-outs? Looks in shape and explosive or something like that? “Hopelessly past his prime” (he very well may be, but we don’t need him to be in his prime, we just need someone who could help)? Which is which?

Past his prime should still be better than Fish..

8ppg last year with an injured Arenas off the bench is still better than a healthy old Fish as a starter.

i dont think its going to happen.

I think the Lakers are staying pat in the pg department this year. i can see them going after a free agent pg next summer (Nash, Brooks, Felton, A Miller, Billups, Heinrich). I know we cant offer more than the mini-mle, but we can offer them the ability to start for a contender. something most other teams cannot.

and i think the lakers do this as an attempt to get fish to retire. i dont think fish would really want to sit on the bench for an entire year.
