Yes! What caused issues back then was the unknown about the desease.

A player probably wouldn't feel the need to retire because of the extra precautions taken such as latex gloves for every situation, no matter how small.
Also, people know how HIV is transmitted and these younger guys are not as ignorant as guys were then, even though they didn’t mean to be assholes (well, except that Malone was born an asshole).

thing is...
it wasnt just karl malone and isiah, magic’s “former” teamates didnt even want nothing to do with him. and THATS sad. magic went on to say in the “magic” and “bird” show they aired on nba channel…that when he came out and said he contracted the virus, that when he was at laker practices…shooting by himself, while the rest of his ex-teamates were on the other end of the court…magic said that he would ask if they wanted to play a pick up gm, or one one on…and they all had excuses like…“aah…i have things to do”. man…i could only imagine what my hero went through at that time.

There's a big difference between
having private reservations about being in contact with a person who has a disease that was not fully understood by most people at the time and publicly gossiping about the life of someone who you claim is your friend and who just contracted a deadly illness, kinda like that low-life, ignorant sack of shit Isiah Thomas.
Can’t imagine how terrible it was for him, not only living with a disease that was considered fatal but having those who you thought were your friends abandon you at a time when you needed them most; all at such a young age.

In the documentary that HBO had on Magic vs Bird, Magic said the exact same thing about know who your friends are. Fuck Isiah.
Larry Bird was such a huge friend and you can tell when he almost broke down on the court the very next game he played after he found out.

I wouldn't say Malone was the only ignorant person back then.
Gotta be aware that back then, HIV was virtually a death sentence. People simply did not live long after contracting it because medicine was not that advanced. If anything, Magic’s diagnosis was what thrust HIV into the spotlight. You can’t blame a player for not wanting to play against someone with HIV. It’s not like they’re being racist or anything like that, they’re just thinking about their own personal safety.

i remember like it was yesterday…i got home from work, and plopped on the couch, my uncle, who is also a laker fan said…“you gotta see this man”….and it was breaking news on espn, and i saw the news conference. it was like i was shot right in the chest! i just couldnt believe it. my basketball hero…..im not going to lie guys/gals, i really thought that magic was going to die, like that next yr! i literally cried. im not going to lie.

i went to my room and wept...
its wierd isnt it jelly bean?…how a person, you dont even know, has that kind of impact on your life. especially at such a young age as i was when the news broke. ( i was 20 at the time). jelly…i swear, i shit you not…i literally got into fist fights at work when i heard hecklers, who knew i was a rabid laker fan, calling him “tragic” johnson. lol
yes, it was dumb, now that you think about it, but dammit! i was defending magics honor and name! lol i chin-checked a couple of guys at work, and they left me alone after that lol! magic johnson…my all-time favorite laker…and human being.

high school that was all Lakers fans. They didn’t act like that. Actually I saw a bunch of purple and gold wearing kids that day. But you are right, that was a trip that someone could have that kind of impact.

I still have the LA Times from the day after Magic had that press conference. I definitely cried and thought he would die soon. Thank God he’s still with us. He’s done a lot for Los Angeles.
