Lakers Kick The Tires On Gilbert Arenas, Don't Offer Contract

(SB Nation, Brian Floyd) Rumors of the Los Angeles Lakers' interest in Gilbert Arenas appear to have some weight to them after the team worked out the veteran point guard on Sunday in Los Angeles. Arenas, who is currently a free agent, had been linked to the Lakers, with the team reportedly expressing interest in bringing him in for a workout.

However, though Arenas reportedly performed well, the Lakers did not offer him a contract -- at least for now.

The report comes from ESPN Los Angeles' Dave McMenamin.

Arenas, who turned 30 last month, looked "slimmed down" and "explosive," according to a source with knowledge of the workout, but no signing is necessarily imminent as the guard flew back to his home in Orlando, Fla., from Los Angeles on Sunday night.

McMenamin also reported the workout was held at the home of Steven Jackson, known as the man behind L.A. Gear sneakers.

the lakers and jim buss need to move there asses...

if they dont offer a contract for “agent zero”…that just go’s to show that the lakers are going to stand pat (again) with this very same damn team like they did last yr! the lakers had chances to make moves last yr before the deadline, and chose to stand pat…and it bit theM in the ass. (just MO).

i really wished i knew wtf the laker brass are waiting for. you got chances right here, and there just sitting on there hands. we see the shaky, pg, play, and i know mitch does too, soooo…..whats the hold up? deron williams? no…rajon rondo?…no….you got to go with whats in front of you. “they havent offered arena a contract for now”…well it might be too late when the lakers do decide. ive always been an impatient guy, and ive been “patiently” waiting for the lakers to do something…since last yr! pls dont fail me mitch. make a move!

Fish gives 100% EVERY min he plays

We all know his faults and we all agree we need an upgrade at that pos. What I have a problem with is the people who bash on Fish like he’s some scrub we picked up off waivers. As opposed to a guy who has given Laker fans some of the most memorable moments of their lives. What have you done for me lately? Should be the new Laker theme song.

by Grabmeone2 on Feb 13, 2012 12:12 PM PST up reply actions

i feel you but you have to look at the bigger picture.

your only as good as you weakest link, that’s no disrespect to Fish but if Kobe has to work twice as hard helping fish guard these talented PGs, then that’s taking away from kobe doing his job. same for artest and barnes when they have to guard these Pgs while the shooting guards and small forwards are being guarded by fisher. Its a trickle down affect. I don’t think anybody don’t respect Fish or everything he’s done to get those 5 rings but we have to face reality, and that’s that he’s killing us right now

I think anyone can see why Lakers fans are frustrated with him. I think it is more about him or Lakers fo or both knowing when to say when...

it is time even If he will give 100%, he is getting worked over for the most part, lost more steps after losing some already before and his shot is not there consistently any more.

at best he gives us another look, as well as give Kobe more rest which is crucial right now, specially on a condensed year like this.

No clue. My guess from what Mitch has said in the past

is that its all a waiting game now because they don’t want to lose any assets that they can use later to get a better player. Just think if they can trade for a better PG down the road that would make 5 pgs on the team.

I'd be excited to have Gilbert Arenas

as long as he’s willing to sign for a vets minimum. That would make him low risk, high reward. If he can be the playmaker in our second unit, then I’ll not have to cringe and yell at the tv every time the “Peace Corp” wastes a possession. I think he can still do it. by Caleb Jang on Feb 13, 2012 11:19 AM PST reply actions

signing Gil is a low risk High high high reward

At his worst hes better than all our bench guys and 2 of our starters. At his best he gives us exactly what we need in a guard and pushes Fish further down the bench (hopefully) How can you go wrong with that? Plus it sends Morris to the Dleague to get actual game reps and develop rather than sit on the bench and get splinters. Its a win win all the way around

All I keep thinking about is about all of those wide open threes that Fisher, Blaker

I love Fisher but our PG play is HORRIBLE. Our last 2 games, the PGs have combined for 68 points & neither of them are a top 15 PG in the NBA so just imagine what CP3, Nash, Lowry, Westbrook, Parker & Curry are going to do & that’s only in the West. the Cav’s have Sessions as their main backup, incase Kyrie Irving goes down, as is the case now, and knowing that their owner is Dan Gilbert.. it’s hard to imagine the Lakers getting a player from them anytime soon.

by Ballinsohard on Feb 13, 2012 1:19 PM PST up reply actions

True true

I would definitely not complain if he can score, because its the very reason why we need him.
I complain about Kapono because he misses his shots, Metta because he can’t defend as good as he used to, and the Murphy+McRoberts combo, because they can’t play well enough to replace the void Lamar left when he left.

If Gilbert get signed, I hope it gives the Lakers the shot in the arm it needs.

by Caleb Jang on Feb 13, 2012 1:48 PM PST up reply actions

yea and kapono doesnt move well at all without the ball, like goudelock does.

that’s why goudelock moves around screens and gets himself open a lot for open shots. i think metta is having a similar prob that LO had, and that’s that he is best suited when he can focus on one thing and not be put into too many different situation so he doesn’t get lost. There’s no other explanation for Mettas shot being as broke as it is beside too much thinking

by Ballinsohard on Feb 13, 2012 1:58 PM PST up reply actions

Please can we for once make a move

I mean Jason Kapono…it’s not worth my time to look up how you spell it because he is garbage. Guys like him are not making winning moves that’s just plucking pieces off the garbage heap hoping that maybe you will get lucky. Now giving a guy a contract that is dirt cheap. A guy who mind you used to average 20 a game and used to be the cream of the crop but was set back by major knee injuries and now is trying to slim down and regain his previous form, that is a winning move. Also can we please get rid of this horindous tandem of Matt Barnes and Metta World Piece… Neither guy can score but one thinks he is the second coming of MJ at times and the other is at best a back up that we start at times. I’m not saying we need a star but maybe someone who can at least make a 3 point shot when they are wide open or someone who can get up and slam it down on a good cut to the basket.

I doubt a shift to Mike Brown's offensive system will improve Gil's numbers... good shooters like Kapono and Murphy come here and turn into bricklayers

The Kobe knee treatment may not work as well on Arenas because, well… he’s not Kobe. Brandon Roy had that treatment too. Kobe is the real Machine. He heals while playing when other guys would be in a hospital.

Arenas’ numbers in ORL should be more of an indicator of his potential than the knee treatment. And those numbers were terrible: at or below the level of Blake/ Fisher/ Kapono.

Jerry West was at the workout too, I read.

FUCK DAVID STERN for vetoing destiny.

Arenas was forced to be a spot up shooter on

A orlando team that had gaurds that do alot of the same stuff he does with smaller contracts.

And Roys knees was problematic anf a concern coming into his draft, much worse. Kobe had it and it worked, tmac had it and it worked, deshawn stevenson had it and it worked so why not arenas? Did you not see the video?

We're not going to get any of those people.

D-Will for Bynum would kill our front-line. D-Will for Gasol would kill the Brooklyn Nets’ future. Rondo for Pau? I doubt Boston wants to add another big man to it’s salary cap, even if it is Gasol. Nash? Why would PHX trade Nash to us for another “seasoned” veteran? Dwight? It might happen if we throw in Gasol, but even then, being the main attraction in Brooklyn next season would be a better place for him than being the second option in L.A. until Kobe retires. Don’t get me wrong, I want them, but I don’t see these deals happening.

I read this earlier (Berger?) and I agree; I think we will start these minor tweaks once the Howard situation is resolved. If he isn’t traded then we will see a couple moves like this before the trade deadline. It would be interesting to see Arenas, but hey, he’s no Jeremy Lin :)

One thing about Arenas

If he’s motivated enough, his defense is quite decent, and will possibly stop opposing PGs from having their own way against us, which means by default maybe we can minus off 6 points off every game due to their Pgs owning us. He doesn’t even need to do much shooting to even have an impact on our team, just saying. Although if he can contribute offensively it will be wonderful.
