After yesterday's off-day, the Lakers get set to take on the Charlotte Bobcats at Staples, before heading out on the 6-game (Not 7, thanks SCG!) road trip, courtesy of the Grammys. The Lakers are only 6-8 all-time against the Bobcats, who always play the LakeShow tough. A Win tonight would be a great sending-off for the soon-to-be road warrior Lakers.

Coming into tonight's games, all Lakers talk revolved around Ramon Sessions reportedly being linked to the Los Angeles Lakers. Is he the solution to some of the Lakers' problems?

Griffins dunk counts because his fingers did scrape the rim.

I prefer the actual rim rattling dunk on people over basically throwing the ball in the net. He does have super bunnies tho lol

That's a dunk

A dunk is throwing the ball down through the rim, catching and holding onto the rim has nothing to do with it.

No? His dunk last year on that NY player he didn’t touch the rim, but the player definitely got dunked on…

so from Larry Coon's column from an hour ago
But the biggest impediment to a Lakers deal isn’t related to the trade rules — it’s overcoming the resistance on the part of both teams. Magic owner Rick DeVos has been reluctant to allow his team to lose a second franchise center to the Lakers (after Shaquille O’Neal in 1996), and the Lakers don’t want to pay such a steep price for what could amount to less than a season of Howard’s services. A source close to the negotiations says Howard’s representatives warned the Lakers that Howard would opt out of his contract and test the free-agent market next summer — which has the Lakers’ brass understandably nervous.

If I was a young elite player, Kobe is the only player who is 33 years or older that I would sign up to play with the idea that their is a future in it (chance to win a championships). I’m not sure how DH would fit in with the Lakers. Defensively and rebounding wise, no problem, but on the offensive end, DH does not have a lot of touch on those turnarounds and hooks and still relies on bulling his way to the rim for points—gets plenty of offensive boards and put-backs also. When guarded by a center with size, it is tougher for him to plow to the rim and teams have been smart to guard him one on one if he is off and let him brick while not leaving those three point shooters open.

If he is ineffective down there and does not get as many touches, he will likely get frustrated. Kobe and Shaq were a good one two because Shaq could do both the bulling his way to the rim but he also had touch on those close turnaround shots.

It looked good there...

but it is very inconsistent and when it is bad, the bricks start coming. I do agree, with Pau around that would help things. Pau is still a better offensive post player than DH or Bynum imo. That is when he commits to it—posting up, driving to the rim mixed in with his jumper. DH is freak athlete also and could play the Bynum role on the Lakers (defensive anchor, rebounder) better than him and still get his looks, but I do think he would be the third option or should be if Pau is there.

Once Wade gets healthy,

I like what the Heat have but you make some good points. About Bosh, he has gotten a lot better with his post play and driving to the rim over the last year. He is not a tough guy but just like with Pau being the key to the Lakers offense by being the dominant post player, Bosh is the key to the Heat offense imo for doing the same thing. Bosh’s game and Pau’s are similar and Bosh has gotten better on D. They are not that far apart and Bosh is young.

With Bron and Wade posting up a lot more...

they take some of that burden away from Bosh, but he still needs to be going to the rim every game for the Heat to be successful for the most part because the rest of the big men can’t post up at all or create their own shot for the most part, sigh. Joel has trouble catching passes still, UD is to short for that kind of thing, and Curry and Pitt or just not going to be there any time soon.

I don't mean this to sound like I'm attacking you, because I like your posts

but I’m really tired of hearing how Dwight wouldn’t get touches on the Lakers. I think this is a product of people trying to determine the way the Lakers would play based on observations and adding up skillsets, instead of looking at facts. Here’s what I mean:

Dwight does what he does as the focal point of an offense, in which he is not assisted as much(Actually nearly as much. Drew is assisted on 64% of his buckets this season, Dwight only 48%.) because he is relied on to score. Besides this, while Dwight does have a higher usage rate than Bynum, it’s not by much. But, replacing Bynum’s touches with Dwight’s, I think Dwight’s efficiency would go up (Because he’d be less relied on to score on his own, can finish lob passes so much better, and because he’s just impossible to guard when he’s on the move towards the rim) and his points would go down, but not by much. Slightly less shot attempts, at a higher clip than before. But the other things are: Dwight is a much better passer than Bynum, which is a big problem we’ve had with Bynum. Dwight’s a better rebounder, which is no big deal, since it’s not like Bynum’s a slouch. But he’s a much better defender than any incarnation of Bynum we’ve seen since the 17-1 run last season, and that is a big deal with how shabby the Lakers defense has been.

I don’t think Dwight would transform the Lakers team on his own(Because we’ve already got an all-star, who’s pretty damn good), but switching him with Bynum would be a big big upgrade, and I don’t think it would really hurt Dwight’s production nearly as much as people seem to think

Good take, good info

Another factor is ego and I’m not saying it would be a problem, but DH is arguably the best player in the league and has been the man for his team since day one and that is not the case with the guy he is replacing (the second best overall center in basketball imo). This is Kobe’s team. If DH comes in and accepts the Bynum role (will improve the defense and rebounding maybe a lot and Bynum is no slouch as you say) even if he does struggle some on the offense end or whatever issues come up, the Lakers are title contenders right away with Pau still around.

Wade and Bron have handled it well—there is no, “this is my team” and they let the fans and media debate that. That is no always an easy dynamic to get right, but it may be nothing though with DH going to either the Lakers or Bulls. Have to what and see what happens with either.

I know what you mean. The "my team" thing is an issue,

but, if handled well, there’s room for Kobe to play basically the way he is now, and for Dwight to strive. Wade and LeBron probably handled it that well because of how close the two are off the court. I know Dwight and Kobe know each other, but I have no clue how close they are, and they certainly aren’t as close as Wade and LeBron. But, either way, good point man

You cant fault him for that. Why would he want to play here with Kobe for a few years and b back in the same situation he’s in now vs Playing with another young star for years to come. Bring him here and its just him and Kobe with nobody else worthwhile on the team and no cap room to bring anybody else in.

good point...

they both are young and I think it would be more about DH in that situation as opposed to either going to the Lakers or Bulls in the sense of who’s spotlight it is—DWill is one of the best pg’s but he does not have the hype around him atm that CP or Rose has (already won an MVP). With the added move and an owner who is willing to spend money most likely there is a lot of potential there.

That's was pretty much what I was saying...

I say, let him waive his early termination, that way we can build around him for at least next season. It would be terrifying to have him become a free agent and have to choose whether to stay or leave.
But the part Coon leaves out is – if he leaves he’s not getting as much money; he would get the best contract with the team he was traded to…

If we hafta give up Pau and Bynum why would he?

The rest of the team is nothing to get excited about

Kobe and Dwight vs Dwill and Dwight...plus money to spend

If they dont hafta give up Brooks they can get a pf or sf and add depth…Long term the Nets are a much better option

I mean't in a trade where they would obviously give up Brooks + draft picks

Yeah, they might be a better team in the future. But right now they have zero talent beyond Deron. And I really think that Deron and Dwight will go to DAL if they both become FAs, not NJ…

Not if he goes to the Nets via trade.

And our talent outside of the obvious 3 isnt much better. They will also have cap room which we won’t. They can build around those 2 now vs the Lakers having to wait til Kobes retired.

18 million of the Nets salary is on Deron Williams

and an extension would give him even more of that pie and if both signed max extensions, they would only qualify for the room exemption, because they’d be at about 54-56 million. Core of Dwight, Williams, and Lopez, who will also be up for an extension next year

We’d be at 67 million either way, even if we trade Bynum and Pau for Dwight, because Metta and Luke are due over 13 million next year while Blake and Fish are owed a little over 7 million

Forgot to add,

that would qualify us for mini-MLE and assumes no further transactions or anyone getting amnestied, which I doubt happens even if MWP uses his player option. Plus, there is always the stretch exception allowing us to waive a player and allow the salary to hit at a later date. Basically, there are plenty of ways to work with our salary cap situation and most of the maligned players on this squad won’t even be here

Luke's expiring contract will also be a very good asset next year...

I know that sounds ridiculous, but it’s true, lol…

It'll be a good asset. Kwame's deal was an asset

Lopez would have to go btw

He cannot play the “Pau” role, too much of a C…

but Dwight is better at C

and can play high post. It could work.

lopez would b gone

They can sign for less to get another impact player if they choose to. Thas an option they actually have. Kobe for 3 years or Dwill for a long future.

I was saying if Dwight were to sign in the offseason

meaning Lopez would still be on the team. And it’s Kobe for only 2 years.

aaah then they could realistically let him go.

Or trade him to a team needing a center for a pick or decent role player. They have options out the a$$

Dwight is not worth Pau+Drew

not to me anyway, of course it depends on what we’d get back but it’d have to be a multiple team deal.

like i said guys...

the lakers are going to keep this team intact!! theres just too much poilitcs involved in this trade for every team to swallow. nobody wants to morgage there future for ONE player. its not worth giving up 2 bigmen for dwight, then what?

howard?
mcroberts/turkolu?
barnes/MWP
bryant
??……

i dont like that lineup at all. the lakers will get murdered at the PF position. and no depth?….smh…forget this…..

If we trade both Bynum and Gasol it's for the future of the team

Not for this season, unless we’re able to get another really good player, or a couple contributors. The whole premise behind the deal is we want to build around Dwight, not that we think it will make us contenders immediately.

That being said, if we can get him for Bynum + anyone but Pau and/or draft picks, then I think we’re definitely contenders this year… And, no, I’m pretty confident now (I wasn’t so much a couple weeks ago) that we will NOT trade Pau + Bynum unless we’re getting significant return outside of Dwight.

If thas the case then he would b better off going to NJ

DWill n Dwight is better long term than being in L.A. minus Kobe in 3 years. New arena. Big market. The chance to start his own legacy. He cant go wrong with that and he’s already said he doesn’t wanna follow in Shaqs footsteps. Itz a wrap.

He could start his own legacy wherever he wants.

Shaq will not play into this decision at all – trust me on that… If he gets traded here (which is the only way he comes anyway) it will be with the condition that he won’t leave for awhile, so it doesn’t matter what he wants, it’s a matter of where/if he gets traded…

He holds all the cards.

Not agreeing to an extension kills any trade…He can leave and join Deron in Jersey outright. They’ll have the space. They can trade lopez easily since hes still on his rookie deal. Then they can keep whatever picks they have and keep it movin.

As bad as people want him here

It doesn’t seem like he really wants to come here.
I mean Seriously, building a team around Dwight and Deron is a better option than playing with Kobe a cpl years then hoping a superstar comes to LA after he retires.

agreed...

after hearing the rumors that he came away unimpressed with the conversation with kobe, so they say…and wanting to carve his own path, i just dont understand his thinking right now emmCee.

to list about what…? 6-7 teams of destinations, and leaving them all in limbo, it gets tiresome, and aggravating at the same time. i could see the move to NJ, and playing with deron williams, and stephen jackson, but…

hes not going to win any titles anytime sooner, than say playing with the lakers. (im not being a homer, just stating that with the right trade, he could make the lakers contenders right away).

say he went to NJ, paired with Dwill, like you said, those 2 players would soak up most of the cap, and to try and add through the draft? it would take alot longer for them to be title contenders. to be honest EmmCee…seems to me that he himself is doubting his call to be traded. thats why i say that the lakers will keep this same team together, or try to further add 3rd rate players to there roster because there soo damn way over the cap.

by Mark Jaramillo on Jan 31, 2012 7:16 PM PST up reply actions

They'd have Howard DWill and a gooood youngster in Marshon Brooks

Thats Pg C and SG set up long term. Theyll have cap room to sign another impact player at the 3 or 4 and fill the bench. DWill and Howard could also take less money to help the team build a solid roster in order to win a chip ie miami. The options over there are abundant aaand long term aaand can b done in the upcoming offseason.

did anyone else read that TJ Simmers article?

what a crock of shit right? It wasn’t even journalism! Just a bunch of incoherent thoughts pasted together along with some Laker hate… and very condescending towards the commenters.
