Around SBN: Yankees Deny Rumors That Team Is For Sale

The Credits: "Gossip"

No ones produces storylines like Los Angeles, and I mean nobody. Whether it's your All Star PF Pau Gasol disappointed in his role, team captain Derek Fisher urging to fight through it, or wondering what could have been with Brian Shaw, there is always something to talk about, always something to tweet. Even retired players are jumping into the mix, leaving us plots and subplots worthy of a day-time Emmy.

In what has become a grueling season, it's hard to believe only one-fourth of it has come and gone. A quarter into the season, we begin to see a better picture of where teams might stand once April arrives. Let's hope that by then, our Lakers can work out some of their issues and hopefully don't have to face Hibbert again, anytime soon.

Also,

I’m glad Pau has shown that it is his role not to be in the post very much anymore. I thought it was a system thing and his rhythm in the post seems a lot more off than usual. but either way, I hope the offense becomes the interchangeable series that the Spurs were instead of Pau continuing to play a Nowitzki role that doesn’t really suit him

I don't know

He’s probably the best and most willing facilitator on the team. His offense is definitely not the same, so I would say yeah, at least try to give him a few more opportunities down in the low post though.

On the other hand, Bynum just probably needs a little more time adjusting to getting double teamed and becoming more of a focal point in general to become almost the same type of offensive threat.

Bynum can get used to passing

if he plays in the high post. That is the first step.

Bynum in the high post?

But how can he be a threat there? He doesn’t have much of a jumper, does he?

He has shown in the past an ability to shoot there,

but the better part of it is that it allows him to cut into the lane off the ball the way dwight does out of the high post if the other team tries to double gasol

Moreover, the Duncan/Robinson offense was supposed to function that way.

Both frontcourt players could be interchangeable at the high post and low block and it helped the overall flow.

this is enough. lakers need to fire mike brow asap. i’m tired of people saying the coach isn’t out there shooting. fuck that. this team still has enough talent to be better than 10-8. mike brown has no offense. he’s not head coach material. maybe just a defensive assistant/specialist.

gasol and bynum look like shit, as does the whole offense. 7 point quarters? this is los angeles. these are the lakers. take this mediocre shit back to cleveland. we need a real coach, and we need him now!

If anybody should b blamed it should b mitch

He surrounded our 3 best players with below meh options to begin with. Fisher.Metta.Kapono.Murphy. Walton.Outta all the FA shooters we get a one dimensional bottom of the bench player and expected it to work. We keep Metta for what? We keep Luke for what? Keep Fisher for what? Trade LO and get what? Go back to last year and we trade Sasha and a 1st rd pick for Joe Smith? lol We didnt get paul. We’re not getting Dwight. We wont get D Will. What we have now is about as good as its gonna get. 3 aging stars (former star) 3 bad contracts and 25-30 million tied to 1 player which puts a huge crimp in any future major moves we can make.

Youth isn't everything but it is a starting point.

Its a cheap way to add talent. As for Douglas, he’s more two guard than a point guard and he would’ve been a welcomed addition to the Lakers if they kept him. The Lakers could’ve used him for his shooting and defense off the bench since he got into the league.

by E-ROC on Jan 24, 2012 12:05 PM PST via Android app up reply actions

Yes, yes

but my point is if we’re talking about losing first rounders his energy off the bench would’ve been nice, except he is Baron Davis without the explosiveness but with all of the chucking. I understand wanting someone who can shoot and will shoot. I just think lamenting this kid is ridiculous given how terrible he actually is. Sure, talking about him in comparison to Fisher may seem like an upgrade, but it’s just replacing Fish with someone else who does Fish-like things, chucking with no regard for offense or position on the floor, except he’s younger and plays at a faster pace.

I doubt the player would be chucking on the Lakers.

Its tough to chuck while in the triangle. Douglas is a better version of Shannon Brown and that would’ve been a welcomed sight. Still is. He could backup Kobe.

Yes.

They are players who did not have the handle to play point guard and short at the two guard but athletic enough to play that two position. Douglas is a better version because he can actually shoot and play fundamentally sound defense. Shot selection is a problem as is his handle, though its better than Brown. Yes, he shoots a lot and much of that revolves around D’Antoni’s offense. Simply put, he would’ve done more good than harm in a Laker uni.

by E-ROC on Jan 24, 2012 1:35 PM PST via Android app up reply actions

Shannon's shot selection and handle

are much maligned here. No one thinks he did more good than harm. and it’s not all about the defense

I know that

but his faults are the exact same as Shannon’s and he is maligned here as a player more for those chucking and brick handles than for his defense. If Douglas has those problems and we’re expecting him to run PG, then it’ll be the same thing he’s doing now

With that said hes still better than Fisher

Id rather have a young player who has played good ball over an old player who’s bottomed out and is a liability on both ends of the floor and at a cheaper price with infinitely more upside. I think he would do better here with all the wude open looks he would get plus he can actually attack the paint.

I think it has more to do with age, than experience.

Its a tough question to answer.

For instance, Kobe had been in the league for 12 years back in 2008, but i wouldn’t have called him a veteran. But i probably do now.

If I had to give a short, concise answer to your question, i would say over 30 years old, with 10+ years experience in the league.

young, playing too fast, and inconsistent

are just as bad as old, slow, and inconsistent. That’s why those players usually don’t stay that long in the league

disagree

Young players are expected to have issues with that in the beginning. Older vets are supposed to understand the game better and not go thru it. Younger guys have time work and fix those issues thus the reward.is greater long term. Perfect example is Kobe. Young Kobe was frustrating to watch. Being young he worked it out and is what he is now and we had him for a bargain for a long time. give me young, inconsistent with upside vs old and inconsistent anyday and twice on Sunday. not even close

Young Kobe

is not a parallel to toney Douglas who in his fourth year isn’t showing anything close to the poise or understanding of his role as Kobe did in his fourth year. Young and inconsistent in the first couple years fine, but by your 4th year and you’re still not contributing more than hurting and goodbye. That’s just the way it is. I don’t prefer old and inconsistent. I’m just pointing out that older inconsistent players are far more likely to bounce back into their form than young, erratic players who by their fourth year still can’t figure out the way to fit into an offensive system they’ve been in for 4 years

Hes in his 3rd year and his previous 2 years were good in comparison.

The comparison wasnt based on skill level but the ability of a younger player to “get it” Which is ultimately better long term for the team. Players do what the coach allows them to do and obviously Mike D is ok with it. Give me Douglas over Kapono anyday

So, Broussard suggested Lowry/Scola for Gasol/Morris.

Obviously, L.A. takes that in a heartbeat. I’m struggling to find reasons that Houston thinks that’s a good reason unless they believe that they can make a run at Williams or Howard in the offseason or something.

by Ben R on Jan 24, 2012 12:35 PM PST up reply actions

The March 15 trade deadline is more than six weeks away, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a little fun with trade “projections.” We use that word lightly, since these following scenarios are not deals in the works or rumors we’ve heard. They’re just moves we think make sense, moves that could help both teams, moves that GMs can feel free to borrow if they are so inclined. And all of them work financially.
3. Lakers trade Pau Gasol and Darius Morris to the Houston Rockets for Luis Scola and Kyle Lowry
Without Gasol, the Lakers don’t win their last two championships, period. But time moves on — and so do players, even stars. The Lakers need a shake-up and with Howard (at least in the above scenario) going to the next-door neighbor Clippers, the Lakers can’t rely on Superman bailing them out. So I suggest moving Gasol to the team that nearly had him in December, the Rockets.

Houston is dying to add a star, any star, and it will pay handsomely for one. In Houston, Gasol can return to the post (Mike Brown has him playing on the perimeter in L.A.), where he could give the Rockets a nice inside-outside punch with Kevin Martin. Morris could battle Jonny Flynn for backup minutes behind Goran Dragic.

As for the Lakers, this is just what the doctor ordered. While it doesn’t make them the Western Conference favorites, it certainly gives them a significant and much-needed upgrade at point guard. One of the Lakers’ biggest problems is their inabilty to contain quick point guards. Well, Lowry is a tough, gritty and quick point who has improved dramatically as an offensive player. The Lakers’ already stout defense would improve in an instant, and Lowry also would add to the offense as another playmaker and creator.

And with Scola, the Lakers wouldn’t lose one of their strengths — their size. Bynum and Gasol are the best center-PF combo in the game, but Bynum and Scola wouldn’t be much of a drop-off.

What I love about Scola is that he seems to play with the same attitude that MWP did in 2010

and the way that Barnes is playing now which is that they, like Scola, and unlike Pau don’t wish the ball was passed to them, they go and get the ball. Barnes, you can tell, has learned to play with Kobe. He is the only one who cuts and doesn’t wait for Kobe to give him the ball. Scola, imo, is the same type of scrappy player. Besides, I think that Scola is the type of player that doesn’t really play with his back to the basket. I might be wrong but he, like Barnes, score off of hustle plays.

We're not splitting hairs

where they shoot on the floor is important. I said, he’s not much more consistent and if you look at where they shoot, he’s not much more consistent from the mid-range areas than Pau overall.

that’s even leaving out that Pau plays heavier minutes and still shoots better at the rim and in the post 3-9 ft area.

Pau is just a better player. The prize is obviously Lowry, but Scola is nice to have to replace Gasol even if he is a lesser player, but the thing with trading Pau is always the thing that we NEED a back-up C more than anything else once we do that.

how will he not be put in that range

when that’s the range we’re already putting Pau in regularly?

Since they are not the same person you wont expect the same plays to be run

Pre Pau who did we put in that range?

well odom was a perimeter player

and so was Vlad Rad. And then before that we had Shaq and we never had a really good PF to play as anything but a hustle player. Neither of our most recent PFs resemble Pau’s game though. Scola is a shorter, lesser version of Pau. Good post player, nice mid-range game, good passer, can work high and low post area, but not a perimeter player and not as offensively diverse. I don’t see how all of a sudden we can create better looks for Scola in his sweet spot than where we’ve had Pau thus far.

That was not what this conversation was about tho

I just stated how good he is in the post, more than most people know. And somehow it morphed into this. Scola is scola, Pau is Pau. Lowry is what we need #analyzed

It turned into this

because I said Scola was not much more consistent than Pau in the mid-range area. You guys disagreed and I was showing you that 1, he’s not much better and 2, he’s only better from the field in one area thus far.

Then you said, we won’t expect the same plays to be run and asked about Pre-Pau which brought the last response.

if this trade happened,

scola would become our 4th offensive option. he isnt going to get a ton of looks. all i was trying to say is that his 15 ft jumper is better than pau’s and thats where he will probably be on the floor. we wont need him in the post or out past 15 feet. scola is a poor man’s pau.

Why wouldn't he be out past 15 feet?

he’s always out at the 16-23 foot area in Houston as it is.

i was just trying to say

that you arent going to lose a whole lot offensively going from Pau to Scola as the teams 3rd option.

Lesser ability from the post, 16-23 feet, 3-9 ft,

rebounding, C ability on offense, you’re losing a lot between Pau and Scola.

hell,

id even throw in a pick to get this deal done.

we keep the midrange game pau has with scola. who probably is more efficient from aroudn 15 ft. we dont lose much height. and we get a HUGE upgrade at PG.

not sure if Hou is willing to part with Lowry though. Unless, they think they can land D-Will next summer. Houston is close to his home town of Dallas, right?

That's the only reason I could see that they'd be interested in this.

We could take back Thabeet’s deal to create more room or something similar, and offer multiple picks for Houston’s flexibility in future deals. Morey would have to be planning for the long-term unless he has another move under his sleeve planned (offer Martin/pieces for someone else?).

Still need shooting.

The Lakers need that more than a point guard. Point guard could dribble penetrate and the Lakers would brick potential assists still. And do it in comical manner. I’d do the deal, but the Lakers would still need shooters. If you switch Lowry and inserted Dragic and Martin along with Scola, I’d do that deal too. I like that one more than Lowry and Scola.

by E-ROC on Jan 24, 2012 1:41 PM PST via Android app up reply actions

Wait, what?

You’d take a far worse PG and a scoring wing who would get 20-25 minutes a night tops because of how awkwardly he’d fit into the rotation (can’t play the three, forces Kobe into that spot or forces a big lineup) over an arguably elite PG? That’s crazy.

You realize that Lowry can shoot, right?

By himself, he fixes some of the spacing problems, gives Kobe more room to operate and opens up the floor for the bigs. Moreover, you can build around Lowry/Bynum in the long-term, as was the intention when we tried to get Chris Paul.

I know Lowry has improved his shooting and overall play this year and last.

Martin and Dragic present more options offensively, more shooting and quality depth. Plus, Kobe would actually have a backup in Martin. I understand that Lowry has been great, I just prefer more quality depth over Scola and Lowry.

I dont think offensive options is what we need at the moment

We need someone to get our offensive options, options. Kobe cant create all the time. A real guard that can run a real offense and some PnR will cause havoc for other teams that attempt to double up any of our “big 3”

Lowry would play 35 min a night,

so blake would be kind of lost.

and thabeet was added to even out the money. hes young and we would need an emergency backup c with pau gone.

Lakers giving up way too much here

PG and PF is a wash and Ebanks for Thabeet would hurt the Lakers long run

No, that's not what I said

I’m saying Scola + Lowry isn’t much better than Blake + Gasol

Lowry is a huge upgrade over Blake.

and Scola is a poor mans Pau. Yes, we would lose a bit at PF, but i think we would benefit from this.

Lowry, Kobe, Barnes, Scola, Bynum.

love that lineup.

I get where you are going with this

for me it’s Ebanks that kills it for me. If we are making a trade like this and get a 25 year old PG then it can help the Lakers going forward with Lowry-Ebanks-Bynum which I think would go a long way. Plus we couldn’t bench MWP which is starting to look more and more like something that needs to be done. I just think a lot more can be gotten back if we trade out Pau, Ebanks, and Blake.

I think this is about the best we can do.

Lowry is so good right now (and obviously I’m assuming he’ll keep playing like this) that I’d give up Pau/Ebanks/Blake just for him…

so take out ebanks, and add in caracter or morris or glock.

or a combination of 2 of those 3. i wouldnt really care.

Wow. A well reasoned post from Abbott.

I agree with a lot of what he says about the offense. And nothing unreasonable said about Kobe.
