NBA Rumors
via www.maclife.com
On a daily basis I check for any NBA rumors regarding the NBA. Of course, my main goal is to see if any of those rumors involve our beloved Lakers. In an effort to not get too excited I try to remember that not only are they just rumors but that you have to pay attention to the source or sources that they are coming from. So, today, before I started studying, I wanted to share some rumors that I thought some of you might be interested in reading and talking about. Especially since we won't have any basketball until Wednesday. Also, I don't want to put my point of view on how any of these rumors might or might not impact the Lakers. I rather read what you guys think about them.
Sources: Magic Inquire about Stoudemire
As I (Stephen A. Smith) told you a little bit earlier in the hour, I have some news to report about your New York Knicks. The Orlando Magic, I will preface my statement by telling you that they have categorically denied this, but my sources tell me that they have inquired about Tyson Chandler and Amar’e Stoudemire going to Orlando for Dwight Howard. Let me confess to you that I’m torn. From a basketball standpoint, it would seem you do that trade in a heartbeat. You don’t teach seven-feet and you don’t teach the dominate and the skills that Dwight Howard has. But I like Tyson Chandler. I like the fact that he rebounds and defends.
Grizzlies Unlikely to Extend O.J. Mayo?
Although (O.J.) Mayo is eligible to negotiate a long-term contact extension with Memphis by Wednesday, the Griz aren’t compelled to agree to a deal or trade him at the moment.
"It remains to be seen whether something happens or not," Griz general manager Chris Wallace said about a Mayo contract extension. "If it doesn’t happen I wouldn’t read much into it. We didn’t extend Rudy and resigned him. It’s a floating situation. I wouldn’t say (Mayo) is a lock to be with us after this year and I wouldn’t say he isn’t. There’s so much ground to be covered between now and July."
Meanwhile, Mayo keeps paving the wave for a productive season.
"I’m happy in Memphis. Don’t get it twisted," Mayo said. "I love the foundation we’ve built. This is my comfort. I’m good."...
The main reason I placed the OJ Mayo rumor and link is because I have heard many Laker fans (including myself) drooling over the possibility of having OJ Mayo in a Lakers uniform.
Have at it.....

The premise of trading STAT was because they couldn't coexist on the court, Right?
then how is getting dwight going to change that, and Melo and Stoudemire were friends off the court and couldn’t play together. That trade would make perfect sense for orlando because they would be winning it in my opinion. If they pull the trigger it is another example of James Dolan not looking at the big picture on how to build a team to compete not to just look good on paper.
in what way is stat and chandler a victory over getting dwight and turk plus a shooter
less cap space used over a shorter period of time

Orlando isn't looking for a trade of equal value for Dwight since that won't happen
ORL is just looking for the best package they can get so they don’t end up getting nothing when Dwight walks.
Stat + Chandler > Bynum + LAL bench player > Lopez + picks.
Not talking about what Orlando is looking for
I was wondering how he considered them getting a victory out of this.

Performance
if Melo and stat cant co-exist, how will Melo and dwight do it. Orlando is making away with 2 potential all stars this year. Seems like a win win in both situations but I believe orlando is getting the better of it. Howard will be reduced to being in the pick and roll exclusively, and that would be okay if they had a PG to do that. Melo and Davis are not those players. They will be in the same spot they are now.
well, no. 1
Stat is an all star if just by votes and reputation alone
no. 2 NYC would be a fool to do that trade straight up with taking no one else but Dwight and Turk.
no. 3 How does everything you say about NYC being in a standstill, not also apply to Orlando signing two of the same type of player, pnr specialists, for 4 more years for far more money than Dwight by himself will cost NYC. Also, Davis is actually an excellent pnr player when motivated, Baron Davis that is.
no. 4, when we talk about trades, it’s not just the exchange of talent, but the ability to sign more future talent. Losing Turk and howard, but Magic would be gaining salary in this trade and would be a less balanced team with more ball stoppers.

Let me go down the list
1. Stat was an MVP candidate last year and could still be if featured in a teams system.
2. Orlando would not give up a Reddick, if thats who you mean by a shooter, and i don’t think NYC would push back too hard because look at the boatload they gave to denver last year, they want the star.
3. You can only do so much when your star wants to leave now your getting another possible MVP candidate to pick up the slack for dwight offensively and chandler for the defensive slack. Orlando being in the same position they are now is a good thing, not so much for NYK.
4. Maybe I look at trade differently from most people. When I judge one I look at potential and how a player could be featured in the coaches system to maximize their talents. In this case Dwight does not fit the system in place for the Knicks, IMO, while Amar’e and Chandler would fit very well in Orlando’s.
Losing Turk would be huge too because, I assume we are comparing howard and Amar’e then turk and chandler, chandler is a far better player a what he does than Turk is and considering you cant keep howard Amar’e for howard seems like another win for Orlando.
The boatload NYC gave up last year
is exactly why they would push for another player to add depth here.
also, STAT’s MVP candidacy was for sure last year. I wasn’t fighting against that. I was just saying that he wasn’t just a potential all-star. But lets also keep it real about STAT’s current production and how it went down once the Knicks players were talked of being in trades. NYC fell off a cliff. Raymond Felton, Gallinari, wilson Chandler were all playing well and they were only a .500 team despite MVP play. And, well Gallo just came there and dropped 37 on they ass with Chandler AND STAT working the middle. All-defensive frontline right there.
NYC would be in the exact same position they are now, except they can actually spread the floor since Turk has far more range, allowing for Melo and Dwight to work different post sets. That’ll have to come with a different coach and some new blood at PG though. Oh and lets also not forget for Orlando that yesterday, Nelson gave the ball up to Turk to bring it up the floor because he couldn’t deal with the defensive pressure of the Celtics BACK-UP pg. Not Rondo, but his back-up. yeah, Amare and Chandler will be maximized in that offense. there’s a reason dwight is less consistent in scoring this year as his pnr cutting opportunities are less and his post isolations have gone up.
Honestly, the only reason that Orlando wants this deal is because the owner is said to be dying soon and he doesn’t want to rebuild. But that is their best root and doing it around Amare with his current terrible contract and the new CBA restrictions coming up is just going to put this team into a freaking nightmare while Dwight and melo is just such an upgrade. Dwight prolly has more 20+ rebounding games than Amare has double digit rebounds. lol. I just don’t see in what universe that Orlanod is right back where they were when their best perimeter player is going to be demoted to the bench and their best ballhandler is a pg who couldn’t handle full court ball pressure from a back-up pg on the Celtics. I get that it’s lockout ball, but that’s just bad as Nelson has been overall this year and he was just average last year. It’s not just Dwight amare needs to replace, but the loss of Anderson in the starting lineup means less 3s shot and he leads the lead in 3-pt shots taken by like 20. It’s crazy and that’s a lot of offense gone to be replaced in the starting lineup by one player. And the fact that his defense is again, terrible. you don’t build around Amare

For the Magic the motivation in getting a player like STAT is obvious. They don't want to lose DH and not get anything
For the Knicks, in my opinion, the motivation is different for getting Howard. The one thing or bad part that all sports analyst are saying about the Knicks is “who cares if they have Melo, Amare and Chandler if they can’t play D” Personally, I don’t think their problem of lacking defense has nothing to do with the players. It has to do with the head coach.

Yeah and even if they had Howard there has to be a coach or a system
in place that makes D a priority. Similar to Rick Carlisle in Dallas. Having a defensive anchor like Chandler was a big part of it, but getting Dirk (especially) and the rest of the team to make a D a priority was even better.

well, Kidd was a good defender
and most other guys had some type of good D. Dirk has always played underrated D, by this I mean he was adequate/average and not miserable as people stated. Same with Caron and Terry and others. They had done defense before in 2006/2007 with Avery, they just needed personnel at G positions to help do it again, plus Chandler helped cover perimeter mistakes much better against players like Wade/Lebron

The Knicks will continue to struggle with D'Antoni and their current PGs either way
he won’t be back, imo

Yeah I doubt it to. Been reading a lot from the NY media
about Phil Jackson.

That is their hope
but even with his classic Knick ties, I’m not sure about how Phil would coach with that hip and back of his as they are. he would literally only be coaching home games at this point. He was on his last legs in 2010. I don’t see him coming back without a major advancement in medicine.

Agree and I think that the big question that he has asked himself in terms of
coaching is how much he believes a team has a legitimate chance at winning a title. He isn’t going to play around with his health if he doesn’t feel like he has a good chance at another title.

What realistically could we give up for Mayo...
I keep hearing how he could help our team. I havent really seen him play, so i dont know his game. What does Memphis need?

just saw this though.
Grizz seeking first round pick for Mayo

If we can facilitate a trade where we don't have to give up anything but a pick for Mayo
that’s fine since we have 2 this year in the first round I believe, but if there is any possibility that we have to give up the Odom TPE to do it, I’d rather us involve a third team to see what else we can get with the pick and the TPE

This is really interesting. Thnx for posting it.
It would be even more interesting to see what the Lakers are willing to give up to get Mayo. Unfortunately, I think other teams would be willing to give up more or better offers than what the Lakers can offer.

There are some other players out there that could be interesting....
What do you guys think about Devin Harris or DJ Augustin

Both good possible candidates at PG
only thing with Harris is he’s currently in a deeeeeeep slump offensively AND defensively. So, not sure, but Augustin has been balling.

my hope with augustin is this....
He currently is being bothered by a toe injury. It looks like he is going to sit a couple games. I’m praying that Kemba Walker plays like a boss, tears it up, and the Bobcats win several games in a row or are at least competitive. This will show the bobcats FO, that Augustin is expendable. Then use the Odom TPE, along with a pick or a rook/soph to trade for him.

I don't know the entire story on the other guys like Harris.
Definitely don’t know anything on Augustin. Only thing I’ve read on Harris is that he recently got injured is sick and isn’t playing. Not 100 percent sure though.

Or how about Aaron Brooks?
He is a RFA, but do you think the Suns retain him?

They'd be smart to, but I'd love to have him instead!

Does Mayo fit in the Odom TPE?
And Stoudemire for Howard straight up is an awful deal for the Magic, unless they somehow also built a time machine and sign 2005 Steve Nash and it’s still an awful deal.

Suns may let Robin Lopez become free agent
When the Suns selected Robin Lopez 15th overall in the 2008 draft, he was considered the franchise’s center of the future.
His future with the Suns now appears it will be left to July free agency. The Suns have until Wednesday to come to a contract extension with Lopez but that appears unlikely. Lopez would then become a restricted free agent on July 1, meaning the Suns still could match any other team’s offer sheet to him.
Suns President of Basketball Operations Lon Babby said he has had several discussions with Lopez’s agent, Arn Tellem, to inquire about an extension.
"We have talked to see if there was any common ground worth pursuing and I’d say it’s unlikely at this time," Babby said. "It’s been a completely amicable process. There really isn’t any basis for doing a deal and we’ll look at it again in the summer."
