Wednesday Chatstravaganza: Who's Your Second Team?

Photo

Let's talk about you for a minute.

There's zilcho happening in Lakerdom today, so I figure why not get to know the paying customers readers a little more? The SS&R marketing department tells me this sort of thing makes the site more relatable to today's youth. It's either this or post some parkour videos.

All right, so here's what I want to know today: who's your "second" team? Which NBA team do you root for when they're not playing the Lakers? And why them? Or are you one of these people who doesn't believe in having a second rooting interest and instead dislikes every team in the NBA aside from the Lakers? If so, I respect the purity of your worldview even if I don't share it myself.

Don't just sit there. Be somebody! Tell us what you think.

Enough about me, let's talk about you.

What do you think of me?

Seriously, I always root for the Clippers when they’re not playing the Lakers. Main reason is that they’re another L.A. team and they can’t help it that their owner is a fucktard racist who doesn’t give a shit about the team itself. After the Clippies, I’d have to say OKC, New Orleans and Orlando. I always want to see those guys win when they’re not playing us.

Blasphemy!

But I would have to say the Thunder.. Durant is too much of a beast, plus hes poised to dominate once Kobe retires! His game still needs a lot of polishing, but with the squad he has, it’s fun to watch them running the floor!

I don't really have a second team

but my first choice team to play with in NBA 2K11 is the Thunder.

I really like Orlando as a 2nd team, I guess

Since Shaw went to Indiana, I’ll root for them as long as he’s there. I hope the Timberwolves turn their shit around.
And since I moved to the Bay Area, maybe the Warriors can do well.

My second team varies from year to year.

I don’t have one particular second team that I always root for. Well I typically wish the best for the Clippers when they aren’t playing us, so they are potentially my all-time second team. But each year it’s a different team, and it’s usually one in the east. I’ve always wanted Chicago and Orlando to well the past few seasons.

i'm a life long bay area resident and a life long lakers fan

but i do have some love for the dubs. the warriors are easy to root for as a second team (it’d be hell having them as your first team). they usually play a pretty exciting brand of basketball (lots of scoring/no defense) and they’ve never been a real threat to the lakers.

The Knicks

Originally I just liked their uniforms. Then I rooted for them because they were Jordan’s rival and I was never a big MJ fan. Then I moved to NYC for a while and spent several years going to Knicks games before returning to LA.

It helps that they play in the other conference and that they and the Lakers have so rarely been good at the same time. In my lifetime there’s never been any crucial head-to-head battles and thus no real occasion for me to develop any animosity toward the Knicks.

Completely random (born and raised in SoCal), but my "2nd" team is the Wizards.

Specifically, my favorite non-Laker has been Gilbert Arenas, although the last few years have been quite a drag. But before his knee injury, when he put up that 60+ pt game against us, his hibachi attitude, the game winning shot and then turning around knowing it’d go in, taking on the #0 because that’s how many minutes they’d say he’d play in the NBA/UofA. I was just drawn to him, and ergo, by extension, the Wizards.

My love only increased when they drafted Nick Young (a fellow Trojan). Although the results have been awful, and Arenas has since moved on, my affection for this team remains high and I look forward to John Wall, McGee and Vesely flying high for years to come.

Knicks and Grizzlies

I love the colors of the Knicks, and the grizzly bear was always my favorite wild animal as a child. Since my homestate is Missouri, I was hopeful the Grizz would end up in St. Louis or Kansas City, but Memphis is close enough.

The Thunder, on the other hand, despite having nearly identical jerseys as the Knicks and an even closer proximity to MO, I just can’t stand them. They were stolen from Srattle during the one year I lived in Washington, and I felt for the people who lived in that state.

I’m also partial to the Suns, because I spent half my life in Arizona and like seeing teams from a state most people dismiss succeed. And I kinda enjoy watching the TWolves, I like their unique court design.

Usually my second favorite team is. . .

whoever is playing the Celtics (although this year I would have rather seen Boston win it all than Miami).

Sometimes young teams have some charm – like when the Lakers beat the Thunder a couple of years ago – but now the Thunder are too much of a threat, have Kendrick Perkins, so F them.

I really enjoy watching annoying teams get beat, like the Celtics in 2009, the Blazers a couple of years ago when they were talking about taking out the Lakers only to lose to Houston. And this year watching the Grizz take apart the Spurs was really fun. Especially since a lot of Spurs fans still act like they are a championship caliber team.

I could see myself enjoying the Clips (though they always find a way to F things up) and even the soon to be Anaheim Royals if the Lakers aren’t able to figure it out before Kobe retires.

Royals?

First they abandon KC, then steal a longtime KC name? That just makes me mad if they do that.

I thought I heard

that the Kings would change their name to the Royals if they move but I could be wrong, haven’t been paying too much attention.

Hmm what team do I watch...

I used to watch the Heat because DWade is my 2nd favorite player, but then Lebron came and that was the end of that. I was always a fan of Melo, so I guess I will pay more attention to the Knicks games. I wont ever in my life though rep any other team besides the LakerShow. Other than that, I could watch any basketball game at this point #BringbackNBA

Probably the Warriors...

Being born and raised in the Bay Area, and their constant losing, makes me feel sorry for them. They’re like a cute little puppy…you can enjoy them, and they aren’t threatening. I enjoyed them beating Dallas in the playoffs that one year.

Usually its just the Lakers, though.

I kinda like the blazers

the pinwheel logo and unis look pretty cool. Their fans though are dicks, especially when we go play in portland. Its pretty much a playoff game for them.

other than that, maybe the sonics/thunder (still wish they stayed), and the knicks (like to see them do well after a decade of shittiness).

The Hornets

Coupled with the fact that I’m a sucker for an underdog story (But I’m a Lakers fan? I make no sense.) is the fact I’ve loved a ton of the players that have been Hornets, including Zo, Eddie Jones, and Glen Rice.

Lately though, it’s just the fact that I love Chris Paul. He’s far and away my second favorite player in the league, (I’m a Laker homer, Kobe will still be my favorite player in the NBA until about 5 years after he retires.) as both a personality and a player. His basketball IQ is through the roof, his work ethic is incredible, he’s humble and respectful, a natural leader who obviously isn’t concerned with his own success, and before he got injured was probably the best point guard in the league, and if the playoffs were any indication (Who had a better series than Chris Paul did against the Lakers?) he will be again if/when he gets healthy.

It was bittersweet to watch the Lakers play them in the first round, because on one hand I was really excited they’d get their games nationally televised, and get to watch CP3 play in the playoffs (Again, no disappointment at all), and yet at the same time I hated that I’d be rooting against them. And there’s my rant.

Blazers

They are the only pro basketball team in the NW now and the only team in portland unless you count MLS as a pro sport. I have season tix but when the lakers come to town i buy tickets in a different section and rock purp and gold. Lakers will always be my number one because I’m a CA native.

Probably the Knicks

I live in NY so thats my hometown team, and I’ve been to MSG a few times while I’ve unfortunately never been to Staples.

Though usually when I go to MSG it’s when the Lakers are visiting, so I don’t root for the Knicks then.

Also, I like rooting for the underdogs in playoff races and during the season. I always pull for teams nobody expects to win. I still really want the Cavs to get into the playoffs this season (if they have a season) and play Miami in round one and beat them. That would be just classic.

Toss-up: Team playing the Heat or playing the Celtics

I am a true fan, I only like one team, the Lakers. But I despise Lebron more than any one player and the Celtics more than any team, so I root for : 1. Lakers 2a. Whoever is playing the Heat 2b. whoever is playing the Celtics

2. anyone playing the Celtics.

Really, I only truly root for the Lakers

I root against the Celtics, but it’s not as much happy seeing the other team win.

Beyond teams, I like to see players from my alma mater (UCLA) do well. So it’s cool when Westbrook is throwing down a monster dunk, or Love is pulling down his 30th rebound, or Afflalo is hitting that buzzer beater, or Collison is leading his pacers back to the playoffs, or……

Knicks

MSG is one of the channels I get as part of the cable package in Princeton, so I watch a couple Knicks games now and then. As Dex noted above, their ardent hatred for all things Celtics is a nice feather in their cap.
