Sacramento and Portland both had horrible nights. Former traded down in the draft while taking on more salary in the process, as well as a worse player, to get a guy who would have been available at #15 when the Pacers picked. Not to mention that they have to figure out how the hell Fredette, Evans, Salmons, Thornton, and Cousins all share touches. Honeycutt and Thomas were good value picks, but not enough to get over the fact that the Maloofs overrode their own management to get a guy who would sell tickets.
As for Portland, Smith was a huge reach, especially with Faried (who would have been a great complement to Aldridge), Jackson (which was the higher upside pick), and Hamilton still on the board. Not to mention that Smith enters into a crowded backcourt situation with Armon Johnson, Elliot Williams, Wesley Matthews, and Brandon Roy. Getting Felton was okay I suppose and his shooting ability might work out better than Miller, but he’ll be on a team where he can’t push the ball a whole lot, and that deprives him of one of his main strengths.
