Wednesday Chatstravaganza: Draft And Trade Rumors!

We're just about one earth rotation away from the start of the 2011 draft, and the rumors are kicking about furiously. Like the one where the Lakers are lusting for Anderson Varejao. Or the one where David Kahn has a fiendish plan to steal Andrew Bynum. Most of these are so thumpingly stupid that even I, the whoriest of page-view whores, can't bring myself to give them their own front-page posts, but that doesn't mean they're not fun to talk about. And really, what else do we have to do today. So this is your comprehensive, all-purpose thread to hash over, ridicule and argue for whatever trade and draft rumors you come across.

If you haven't done so already, make sure to study Ben's extremely thorough Laker draft preview here. You can also read my (much less informed) thoughts about the draft at SBN Los Angeles.

Go on, knock yourselves out!

Update with actual, non-rumory news (4:10 p.m.): The Lakers offered Lamar Odom to Minnesota for the number-two pick but were turned down. The hope was to draft Derrick Williams. (Via the LA Times.)

HIGHLY rumory update (4:40 p.m.): The Lakers and 76ers may be talking Lamar Odom for Andre Iguodala. Ron Artest could be included in the deal as well. I think I just pooped a little. (Via Sports Illustrated.)

From Eric Pincus of HOOPWORLD (5:05 p.m.): "FYI - Kobe loves, loves Iguodala. Share an agent. Very tight." (Via Twitter.)

Self-serving update (6:20 p.m.): I've posted some brief thoughts on Odom-for-Iguodala over at SBN Los Angeles.

I prefer keeping Pau and Lamar

and the last thing I want is to re-create the Cavs in LA. I hope this is a baseless rumor because it would damage the confidence I’ve developed in Mike Brown after accepting his arrival.

I would love a Gasol for Love + 2nd Pick (likely Williams) trade...

but that won’t happen as the Wolves aren’t giving up both Love and the pick.

by Actuarially Sound on Jun 22, 2011 1:20 PM PDT reply actions

Just out of curiosity..

Are people interested in Kevin Love, the two pick, and possibly Johnny Flynn for Pau Gasol? I’ve heard that trade rumor going around and thought it was absolutely worth it, though on recent readings I’m hearing that it isn’t the right trade for both teams. Personally, I feel it would be an awesome trade for the Lakers.

by shoang1993 on Jun 22, 2011 1:21 PM PDT reply actions

It would be for the Lakers....

But the Wolves won’t bite….

A more realistic scenario would be Gasol for Williams, Flynn, Darko, and Anthony Randolph.

The Lakers would move Odom into the starting PF position (which may actually improve the team as he provides better defense and spacing than Pau), Flynn becomes the PG of the future, Darko becomes the back-up to Bynum with Gasol leaving, and Randolph provides a young athletic back-up PF behind Odom. Williams would then be the starting SF or at least he would get a ton of minutes because he will probably be better than Artest this year.

But it won’t happen… like most trade talks…. all smoke no fire.

by Actuarially Sound on Jun 22, 2011 1:26 PM PDT up reply actions

As much as I like Love...

we already have an All-Star caliber PF waiting for more minutes and that is Lamar Odom. That is why I would be open to moving Pau so long as we filled the two holes in the roster (SF and PG) with players that are young and can shoot along with a back-up PF/C to fix the depth that we would lose.

by Actuarially Sound on Jun 22, 2011 1:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Odom isn't getting any younger either though

It sure would be nice to get Love, who not only is a great player now but is gonna be 22 next year I think and can be a big piece in the Lakers lineup for years. And I really think that he’s the type of player who would play well together with Andrew Bynum as well.

Filling all those needs would be nice and certainly give more depth, but the Lakers should get more than that if they’re giving up an All-Star caliber talent like Gasol.

We've had Odom for ages and have given him plenty of playing time before

and yet he has still never been an All-Star.

Do you really want Odom to become our 2nd option again? I don’t think I trust Bynum’s wobbly knees to take up the role of 2nd option either.

any truth to N.O. wanting Bynum, Pau and Kobe for CP3, Okafor, and West

Varejao

I like the aggressiveness he brings, I always said he couldn’t start for any other team besides the Cavs so I’d expect him to be big off the bench. Looking at him compared to who’s there (Smith and Ratliff) I don’t think it’s a bad idea.

MIN rejected LAL's offer of Odom for #2 Pick

Per Brad Turner from the LA Times (http://bit.ly/lvKZbD)

On another note, it’s almost hilarious to see MIN thinking they’re operating from a position of strength, when everyone knows, MIN is walking on thin ice. All this Kanter at #2 talk? The stronger it gets, the most assured we can be that MIN WON’T take Kanter there.

I honestly don't think

that the lakers will make a move of that nature. I mean the one thing that makes the lakers stand out in the NBA is their size advantage. yes, they don’t execute their advantage inside as well but trading one of your BIGS wouldn’t solve their issues entirely. their rotation of Pau, Drew, and LO makes them unlike any other team in the league. They just need to tweak the team a little bit, fix their spacing issues and with some luck we’ll be talking about chip # 17 next year.

by markeemarc on Jun 22, 2011 3:51 PM PDT reply actions

i havent been keeping up with the rumors with the wolves besides the pau for love...

can someone please tell me what, and why the wolves are dangling the #2 pick for? like what do they really need? besides pf? i really dont see why minn would reject odom, the guy is 6-10, and can handle the rock like a pg, can love do that? no. so if the cavs do nab irving, is he really the pick the wolves covet? if thats the case, you would think kahn would be trying to wheel and deal with the spurs for parker. but then again, i really dont know what minnesota really wants to use the #2 pick as trade bait for. someone pls explain.

by Mark Jaramillo on Jun 22, 2011 3:51 PM PDT reply actions

the have a glut of forwards.

their rotation is Love, Beasley, Randolph and occasionally Johnson (although he was used ineffectively as a 2 last year). drafting williams with the # 2 wouldn’t make sense from a bball standpoint because there’s no room for him

by markeemarc on Jun 22, 2011 3:54 PM PDT up reply actions

but seriously, if i were Minny

i would keep the # 2 and nab williams. like having too many “talented” forwards is a problem in the NBA.. geez, let the coach fix the rotation when the season starts up again

I would do it....

Artest long term contract is more of a hinderance than an asset, especially as he has declined. Odom for Iggy straight up is an even swap, having them take Artest as well to reduce salary makes it even better. We still have Barnes as a back-up SF plus Kobe can play there too.

by Actuarially Sound on Jun 22, 2011 5:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Would still like to take back Williams or Speights though

I agree that I would do that deal, but it would be nice to fill other spots in the rotation at the same time.

I don't any reason why the Lakers should trade anyone that involves them losing size

or the height advantage they have over other teams. Unless it involves Howard. Personally, the Lakers need to address the issues that got them swept:

Inconsistent outside shooters
Weakest PG combo in the league
An additional wing player who can create his own shot
Horrible bench

1-6 the lakers have the best line up in all the NBA. It is the role players that need an overhaul. The issue is that the lakers can’t trade for anyone decent with the players that they have that isn’t a starter or LO.

Problem is

It’s very, very hard to address those issues if you’re not willing to part with something other teams want. And their bigs are the only things the Lakers have that other teams want.

yeah

pretty much everyone outside of the bigs is dead weight. No GM would want them.

We can either do two things I guess with the roster this offseason. Ship out Odom or Gasol for younger pieces/draft picks or stick with the core and sign someone with our MLE money to help the bench.

by DexterFishmore on Jun 22, 2011 5:11 PM PDT up reply actions

but if you could pick either/or,

what would you go for? i’d still stick with the bigs because that’s what makes this team unique. it’s not like this team as currently constructed can’t win it all. say they’re able to add a shooter off the bench, couple that with an improved attitude on both sides of the floor and i like our chances.

by markeemarc on Jun 22, 2011 5:23 PM PDT up reply actions

Not necessarily

We have 4 second round picks right? The silver lining to Phil being gone is that the “rookies don’t play” theory is gone. We can get a point guard and get some shooters off the bench to try out and see if they can actually contribute right away. It’s been working for the Spurs the last few years. I think that’s what Jelly Bean was hinting at. We don’t need to do anything major unless it involves guys like Dwight Howard/Chris Paul/ or even Kevin Love.

I don't think we're getting an immediate contributor in the draft

The picks aren’t even high second round. They start at 41 and go south from there. If you’re lucky, you end up with someone who can play 8-10 minutes a night. More likely, it’s D-league material and guys to stash in Europe. The percentage of guys drafted 41 and above who turn into contributors at any point in their careers, let alone as rookies, is very low.

Please remember: it's not my fault your team sucks.

Twitter feed: @dexterfishmore

by DexterFishmore on Jun 22, 2011 5:29 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm not saying we're looking to draft the heir to Kobe

We probably won’t even get a good PG prospect. But most realistically what we can get, and what I feel is our most important need off the bench is a spot up shooter. Kyle Korver was taken 51st, James Jones was picked at 49th. Those are just a few guys.

Maybe we could trade up 2 or 3 of our 2nd rounders for a late 1st or something, if there is a PG or C we have our eyes on.

I want a PG (preferably 2) who can shoot the 3, a big who could back up Drew for 5-10 minutes a night, and a wing who can hit the 3. Asking for a lot isnt it?

Iguodala

Odom and Artest for a younger Iguodala who can play small forward and shooting guard? Am I the only person who thinks this is a great idea? Ice Cube said there’s no wear down in Kobe, Iguodala could make that a legitimate statement. Imagine Iguodala at small forward and Kobe at shooting guard, that alone is a guaranteed scoring duo. Now imagine the much younger Iguodala moves to shooting guard when Kobe sits, you lose very little there. Unlike in the past when Phil had to do so much shuffling at the guard position because there wasn’t a legitimate replacement when Kobe left the game. Iguodala adds another two years to Kobe’s career. I hope this trade happens.

Laker trade

Hi, nubie here from Jakarta, been a Laker fan for a long time. Angry and disappointed with last season. Belief that major shakeup to roster is needed ’coz on KB24 is hungry for more while most of rest are plenty happy with a single ring.

How ’bout shipping Gasoft to Wolves for 2nd pick + Love and then sending the pick to Spurs + Odom for Parker? Then trade Bynum straight up (largely) with Howard.

My fantasy trade which has a dose of reality to it (I think) so don’t shoot me for it. I do believe that without a major shake-up and largely fresh start we will see a repeat of last season.

It always perplexes me how professional athletes who gets paid A LOT (especially in today’s financial hardship) can be allowed not to give their 150% every time they are performing for only 2-4 hours / game!

Cheers.

Why in the world would you trade Odom AND the 2nd pick for Parker

that would make the team older not younger, and it simply ain’t worth trading Derrick Williams AND our bench leader for Parker.

by smart_guy on Jun 22, 2011 8:29 PM PDT up reply actions

B’coz Parker is a proven speedy performer which addresses our need at guard while Odom is inconsistent and KB is not getting any younger and 2nd pick is a gamble that might need time to mature into a consistent performer especially with a new system being installed.

by AOMH on Jun 22, 2011 8:33 PM PDT up reply actions

I thought the whole odom is inconsistant argument was put to bed this season.

and even otherwise Parker does not have such a high caliber that he is worth 1 if not 2 potential stars. If you told me just the 2nd pick & some rotation pieces for parker than i would consider that. This type of deal is worth only for a REAL susperstar like C. Paul etc

I cannot fully support a trade that trades either one of them. They are probably my 2 favorites personalities on the team. After losing AMMO, MBenga, and the Machine what kind of comic relief will we have left if the Candyman and Crazy Ron are gone? Swagbro just won’t be able to fit that role that well. I understand this is irrational and that Iggy will likely improved our team and I will end up loving him, but as of now I cannot support a trade of Odom or Artest.

Any chance the Cavs wanna trade Varejao for Artest?

Do that and the Walton/Lamar for Iggy deal and I’d be extremely happy.

that would be a steal and a half for the Lakers

I wouldn’t give up Odom for Varejao, but Artest for sure.

Maybe we can talk Dan Gilbert into sending us ex-LB teammates so Mike Brown can use them to knock LB out of the finals again for years to come.
