Robert Horry's Daughter Has Died

Photo

Today has brought an incredibly sad development to Lakerdom. Ashlyn Horry, the 17-year-old daughter of Robert Horryhas died. Ashlyn suffered her entire life from a severe genetic disorder called 1p36 Deletion Syndrome.

A little background, courtesy of Dr. Wikipedia:

1p36 Deletion Syndrome is a congenital genetic disorder caused by the deletion of the most distal band of the short arm of chromosome 1. Chromosome 1 is the largest human chromosome and represents about 8 percent of the total DNA in human cells. The "p" stands for the short or "petite" arm of the chromosome. "36" stands for the location of the deletion on the chromosome.

According to this interview with Rob, Ashlyn in her short life had to deal with "an exorbitant number of tests, numerous surgeries, and several near death experiences." The effects of the syndrome can be brutal and include developmental delays, vision problems, growth abnormalities and hearing loss. There's no cure or specific treatment. Rob created the Ashlyn Horry Foundation to help others afflicted with the condition.

Our thoughts and sympathies are with Rob and his family. Purple and gold forever.

Poor baby. I think she actually lived longer than they were given hope for when she was little.

One of the reasons his family stayed in Houston after he came to L.A. was so she could be close to her doctors and family/friends.

So sad

I remember there was once a short feature about his daughter and how devoted he was to her. There can’t be anything worse than losing a child. Our love and prayers to Robert Horry and his family. He’ll always have a place in our Lakers family.

Feel so sorry for Robert Horry and his family. Losing a child is probably the worst thing that can happen to somebody.

Wow, this is terrible news...

Rest in peace, no one deserves what she endured. I don’t want to say that I know what they are going through because my brother is still alive and fighting back the Leukemia, but I can feel their pain. My condolences to the Horry family.

ASHLYN HORRY FOUNDATION

The contribution by the entire Horry family in creating the ASHLYN HORRY FOUNDATION is a blessed step towards the time this condition is conquered and eliminated. I hope your pain is tempered through knowledge your Foundation is on its way to relieving the sufferring of many parents and their children. God speed your recovery and your creating a treatment or cure.

We owe at least 1 of our championships to his daughter, and so do the Rockets and Spurs.

The reason I say so is because Horry once mentioned that the reason he never felt any pressure in clutch situations is because he had been through worse in his life due to his daughter’s condition.

Everybody knows this shot:

My heart goes out to Robert Horry his wife and the rest of the Horry family

for the loss of their daughter Ashlyn. I have known for some time now, at least since when Robert first came to the Lakers, of his daughter’s condition. It is out of the natural order of things for a parent to bury a child. Though Ashlyn’s suffering has now ended, as I’m sure she’s moved on to a higher plane, that doesn’t diminish the pain of the loss the Horry family is now feeling with Ashlyn’s passing. I’m sure I speak for the Laker Nation when I say that we mourn with Robert Horry and can be counted on for the love and support of his family at this time.

I remember him being interviewed once about how he made so many clutch shots

and he said something to the effect that he didn’t take the game too seriously because he had a sick kid.
